Robinson to come out of retirement
World Cup winner joins Brian Ashton at National 2 North club Head coach Mark Nelson hails comeback of best ever playerJason Robinson, the former England captain and World Cup winner, has come out of retirement at the age of 35 and joined the National 2 North club Fylde.Robinson was Sales head coach last season but left after a reshuffle following a flirtation with relegation. He retired from playing after the 2007 World Cup final and he will now join up with the former England coach Brian Ashton, who last month signed for his old club, with whom he spent seven years as a scrum-half from 1966."It is a remarkably fortunate coincidence for me to be returning to help out my old club Fylde as Jason arrives to play," Ashton said. "I have had the privilege of working with Jason and know that his stature, ability and qualities as a player and a person will benefit all who come into contact with him, both on and off the field."The Fylde head coach, Mark Nelson, was in charge of Sales backs when the club won the Premiership four years ago. "I am absolutely delighted that we have signed Jason for next season," he said. "Given his record in both codes of the game, its not an exaggeration to say that he is the best ever rugby player. Its a fantastic opportunity for our players to play alongside such an experienced and mercurial talent and I expect a number of players will express an interest in joining the club to have a similar opportunity."As well as playing, at full-back or on the wing, Robinson will help with community activities for Fylde.Rugby unionPaul Rees guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
