Bolton 2-2 Birmingham
Reduced to 10 men, Bolton Wanderers salvaged a point against Birmingham City thanks to a man who was briefly on the books at St Andrews. Robbie Blakes Blues career was brief and hardly memorable but a high-quality free-kick opened his Bolton account and denied his former club all three points. Coming after the dismissal of the Bolton goalkeeper, Jussi Jaaskelainen, and goals from Roger Johnson and Craig Gardner, it amounted to a frustrating finale for Birmingham. It had started so well for them. Alex McLeish had reinforced his midfield with the addition of Lee Bowyer. It could have been an indication of negativity but the merits of a seemingly defensive gambit were soon apparent. With Barry Ferguson the disciplined anchor man, others were afforded the freedom to advance. Bowyer was a beneficiary, getting to the byline to reach James McFaddens pass and cut the ball back. Cameron Jerome glanced it across the penalty area for Johnson to slide his shot in.A second appearance in attack by the marauding Johnson had equally large repercussions. As he challenged Jaaskelainen for a high ball, both fell to ground. The central defender rose, intent on apologising, only to be cuffed around the ear by the goalkeeper. A fourth red card of Jaaskelainens Bolton career was the inevitable consequence, though Johnson was unfortunate to be booked and Martin Petrov, a participant in the subsequent skirmish, was disgruntled to be sacrificed in Owen Coyles shake-up of his side.Predictably, the referee Kevin Friends reward for dismissing Jaaskelainen was the enmity of the Bolton crowd. More debatable was the decision his assistant made as Birmingham extended their lead. Jerome appeared marginally offside as McFadden crossed. Nevertheless, the striker was permitted to set up a second goal. His header was directed into the path of Gardner, who miscued his first attempt to score but had sufficient time and space to succeed with a second effort. It was a third goal in two games for the former Aston Villa midfielder. But then came the Bolton comeback. Johnsons eventful afternoon continued when he leant on Kevin Davies and Friend awarded a penalty. Davies chipped it nonchalantly into the roof of the net. A second set piece brought a similarly confident finish to earn a point. Blakes freea€‘kick was placed beyond Ben Foster.Premier LeagueBolton WanderersBirmingham CityRichard Jolly guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
