He has netted twice in four games and has already played an important part in the battle for survival.McCarthy told the Wolverhampton Express and Star: "I want to sign him and I think Jamie would be happy to come. Meantime why not read Sachin Nakranis take on why the pressure is building on wolves boss Mick McCarthy.Describing an early November fixture as a six-pointer may be extreme, but as wolves and Wigan prepare to meet at Molineux on Sunday afternoon there is no doubting the gloom threatening to engulf both Premier League clubs. Between them, they have collected only one point from their past seven games and, sitting in 17th and 20th place respectively, know losing today could be the onset of a long, hard winter.Tension will characterise both dugouts, then, but it is fair to say that Mick McCarthy will be feeling the strain far more than Roberto Martinez. The wolves manager does not fear a challenge but even for this most obdurate of Yorkshiremen, these are testing times. Having barely survived one relegation battle he now finds himself embroiled in another, and this time there is a conflict with his own supporters to tackle.Read the rest of the feature here.Premier LeagueWigan AthleticWolverhampton WanderersRob Bagchi guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. 67. wolves agree 7m Roger Johnson fee with Birmingham

Centre-back understood to be discussing terms Mick McCarthy in search of defensive reinforcementsWolverhampton Wanderers have agreed a 7m fee with Birmingham City for the central defender Roger Johnson. Johnson is now believed to be holding talks with wolves officials over a move to Molineux. The wolves manager, Mick McCarthy, is keen to bring in a new centre-back and had a 3m bid for Readings Matt Mills rejected before he moved to Leicester City last week.Johnson has been on McCarthys radar since the end of last season when Blues were relegated from the Premier League. City had initially been hoping to secure around 10m should Johnson leave St Andrews, but it is believed a compromise has been reached.Johnson moved from Cardiff City to St Andrews in a 5m deal two years ago and quickly adjusted to the top flight, forming an effective partnership with Scott Dann.If the deal goes through, it would equal the club record fee wolves paid Burnley last summer for the striker Steven Fletcher.Wolverhampton WanderersBirmingham CityTransfer window guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

  68. Squad sheets: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Fulham

This game had more than enough riding on it without Karl Henry, the wolves captain, reminding Danny Murphy that he "should worry about his team and no one elses". Murphy had implied wolves were "too pumped up" in the wake of Henry breaking Bobby Zamoras leg at Craven Cottage in September. The Fulham midfielder seems certain to get a hostile reception at Molineux on an afternoon when wolves will be desperate to pick up three points to revive their survival hopes. Fulham are not yet safe but one more win should be enough. 70. wolves 0-3 Everton

In his programme notes Mick McCarthy described last weeks defeat at Newcastle as "arguably the worst weekend of the season" for his side. The wolves manager now has a new candidate. Phil Nevilles first goal for three years and first-half strikes from Jermaine Beckford and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, the latter a superb swerving drive from distance, condemned wolves to a second successive defeat and left them stuck fast in the relegation zone. With four games at Molineux remaining McCarthy had suggested that wolves fate would be decided in front of the home fans. On this evidence it wont make for pleasant viewing. wolves had started brightly before Everton carved them open for the first time, John Heitinga finding Leon Osman clear on the right and the midfielder delivering the perfect cross for Beckford to glance home. That was a goal of quiet beauty, but the next two roared like rockets. Neville calmly controlled the ball on the edge of the area after Wayne Hennessy had saved wonderfully from George Elokobis inadvertent goalbound deflection and thumped his shot into the top corner for his first goal since April 2008. Six minutes later Bilyaletdinov, picking up a loose ball left abandoned by Jamie OHara and Elokobi as wolves imploded just before half-time, strode forward and lashed a shot into the same spot from 25 yards. It was an object lesson in efficiency - wolves had enjoyed the lions share of possession, but in addition to the three goals Beckford had missed two fine opportunities, while the home side struggled to test Tim Howard. That changed after the break, with the Everton goalkeeper twice saving superbly from Adlene Guedioura on the hour, the first from another long-range effort, the second a header from the resultant corner.Even then the visitors could have added to their tally, Bilyaletdinov missing the best of several late chances as the home side poured forward. For Evertonians, overhauling Liverpool remains a tantalising possibility. wolves do not look like overhauling anyone just now.Premier LeagueWolverhampton WanderersEvertonJohn Ashdown guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

  71. David Jones delights in wolves rediscovered confidence

wolves have collected eight points from a possible 12 Midfielder believes side can guarantee Premier League futureDavid Jones is confident wolves will guarantee Premier League survival if they repeat their standard of performance of the past five games during the season run-in.Mick McCarthys side went into the weekend clear of the bottom three after collecting eight points from a possible 12 before losing to a stoppage-time goal against Arsenal last Saturday. The midfielder Jones has played a key part in wolves revival, which included wins away to their fellow strugglers Burnley and West Ham and creditable draws with Aston Villa and Everton. And the former Manchester United player is adamant wolves will remain in the top flight should they sustain their current level of form as they gear up for todays Staffordshire derby with Stoke.Jones said: "In recent games we have played very well, got some good results and the confidence is very high. The wins at Burnley and West Ham showed how far we have come and the belief has grown throughout the season. Those results had been coming because we had put in some good performances before that."Jones was relegated from the Premier League with Derby and knows wolves must continue their current run. "We have come a long way but we know the job is not done yet," he added.Jones believes Stoke will provide a stern test today and that Tony Puliss team do not receive the credit they deserve for their achievements over the past two seasons. He said: "They have done superbly well. They play to their strengths, they pass the ball around as well, theyve got quality in there and sometimes that gets overlooked."wolves will be without their captain Karl Henry, who must serve a three-match ban for his red card against Arsenal. Gerard Houllier marked his first Premier League game in charge of Aston Villa with a win over wolves in September but little has gone right since. Villa have won only five of their subsequent 23 league games and there has been an endless stream of problems off the field, the latest being a team-bonding session that turned into a drunken row. 80. Henry insists Zamora tackle was fair

I felt it was a good tackle, says the wolves captain Midfielder sends his sympathies to the Fulham strikerThe wolves captain, Karl Henry, has insisted that there was no malice in the challenge which broke Bobby Zamoras leg on Saturday, and has sent a message of sympathy to the Fulham striker.Zamora was carried off on a stretcher in the first half after his ankle buckled under a robust challenge from Henry. It was a cruel blow for a player who had signed a new contract the previous day and won his first England cap last month, and the wolves midfielder told the clubs website: "Im sorry that the damage was done to him because its the last thing I would have wanted."I know Bobby - weve got the same agent and we were away with the England Under-21s together. Id never go out to hurt anyone, let alone him. I felt it was a good tackle. I just tried to win the ball, but I could see he was in agony straight away and called to their physio."Zamoras team-mate Clint Dempsey reacted angrily towards Henry at the time and the home fans berated wolves with the chant "youre a disgrace to the Premiership" in the second half. But Fulhams manager, Mark Hughes, later said the challenge had been fair and defended wolves against claims they had been unreasonably physical."There was certainly nothing from me, that I tried to do him, which a few of their players were suggesting," Henry said. "I dont want to hear it from another professional, that Ive gone out to try to do someone. I didnt do anything deliberate and I would never try to do anything deliberate to hurt anyone."We dont want this reputation of being bullies and thats not the way we go out to play. Its within the rules of the game to tackle and people need to stop moaning about it."We have to close these teams down. At no stage does the manager say go and kick lumps out of anybody and I dont think we saw that. As for the crowd, its part and parcel of football. Captain sent-off for foul on Rosicky during 1-0 defeat wolves backtrack on appeal after receiving advicewolves have decided not to appeal captain Karl Henrys red card during their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last Saturday.Mick McCarthy, the wolves manager, reiterated his belief that Henry should not have been dismissed by the referee Andre Marriner for his tackle on Tomas Rosicky but said that the advice he has received over the weekend suggests any appeal is unlikely to succeed, and that Henrys three-match ban could be extended."Having spoken to a lot of different people over the weekend, including a number of ex-referees, I havent found anyone yet who thinks that Karl should have been sent off," McCarthy told the clubs official website, www.wolves.co.uk. "But having also sought advice in terms of the appeal process, we have decided to accept the punishment as it stands."Henry was left furious with the decision to send him off and accused Arsenal players in general of "rolling around" in an attempt to get players dismissed against them.He will now miss Sundays home game with his former club Stoke as well as subsequent games against Fulham and Blackburn. McCarthy added: "Despite our frustration and disappointment at losing Karl for three games, we cant run the risk of that ban being extended and so unfortunately we have to take our medicine and move on."Wolverhampton WanderersArsenal guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Mick McCarthy says player not contacted about exclusion A little phone call or text might not have been out of orderMick McCarthy has criticised Fabio Capellos treatment of Matt Jarvis after the England manager failed to notify the wolves winger of his exclusion from the final squad named to face France. The wolves manager confirmed that Jarvis was told he was in the provisional list of names chosen by Capello for the fixture at Wembley, but there was no contact from Capello or any member of the England hierarchy when Jarvis was left out."Of course the hopes [of Jarvis] had been built up," said McCarthy. "I said in the press conference before last weeks game with Bolton that hed been named in the provisional squad."Of course, Jarvo had some good competition in Ashley Young, Adam Johnson and also Stewart Downing. My point is that if you get notification that you might be called up, you might then get a call or text from someone to say: Sorry, youre not in. Weve all got each others numbers but you find out through the media that Jarvo isnt going."There might be a different way of handling that, that if you are not going to be called up, a little phone call or text might not be out of order. A win for City, for whom Dzeko is expected to feature, will send them top of the table for at least 24 hours and could also leave wolves at the bottom. The visitors, victors over both Liverpool and Chelsea in recent weeks, welcome back Karl Henry in midfield. 95. Djourou likely to be fit to face wolves

Scans show injury sustained at Newcastle is only bruising Knee-ligament damage kept centre-half out last seasonJohan Djourou believes he could be fit to face wolves on Saturday as it has emerged that the knee injury he suffered at Newcastle United last Saturday is nothing more than bad bruising. The Arsenal defender sparked fears that he might be due for an absence of weeks when he was forced off in the 4-4 draw, after taking a bang to a knee. Djourou missed virtually the whole of last season with knee-ligament damage. However, scans have allayed those fears and if Djourou cannot make the wolves game, he seems certain to be ready for the eagerly anticipated visit of Barcelona in the Champions League last-16 first-leg next Wednesday.Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, decided against the purchase of central-defensive cover during January, feeling that he could not improve on what he had with what was available on the market. His other specialist options in the position are Thomas Vermaelen, who has not played for the club since the end of August and remains out with an achilles injury, as well as Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci, who have struggled to gel as a partnership.ArsenalDavid Hytner guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

  96. Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Stoke City | Premier League match report

If West Midlands constabularys insistence on a noon kick-off was based on the theory that elements inclined to disruption might still be half asleep, they neednt have worried. The most tanked up hooligan would have been comatose after half an hour of this excuse for a football match. It was about that time that the chants of Boring, boring first began to issue from the Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters. Prompted by Stoke Citys exclusive reliance on the infamous long throws of Rory Delap as their attacking weapon of choice, the objective might also have taken it as a comment on wolves, who have now scored one goal in the eight league games they have played at Molineux since Christmas.Stoke are already safe, and wolves are now six points clear of the relegation zone with four matches to play, but if this is what it takes, the question surely has to be asked whether it is worth it. Well, obviously it is from a financial point of view, but wheres the joy for the fans?Highlights were minimal. Over the 90 minutes Delap launched 25 long throws into the wolves penalty area, and most were dealt with effectively enough, though a couple inevitably caused problems. Abdoulaye Faye headed one over the bar, and the big defender had another chance when another throw was only half-cleared, and Robert Huth turned it back into the box. Again Faye nodded the ball over the bar.wolves best chance came late, Kevin Foleys intelligent volley dipping just wide with five minutes remaining. At the other end Glenn Whelan fizzed a decent effort over the bar from around 22 yards, while the wolves substitute Nenad Milijas curled a free-kick straight at the Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, but the simple truth is neither goalkeeper was required to make a difficult save throughout.Of the two sides, wolves probably deserved the most credit for at least trying to pass the ball, though they never really looked like pulling Stokes two ranks of four out of position. Dire stuff indeed.Premier LeagueWolverhampton WanderersStoke CityRichard Rae guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

With five games remaining wolves have established a plump looking five-point cushion between themselves and the relegation zone, but that could look a lot less comfortable if both West Ham and Hull win. Footballer-cum-artist Jody Craddock, who scored both wolves goals in the draw at Stoke earlier this season, will captain the side on his 500th league appearance. Having already achieved safety, the visitors main motivation is to record a third consecutive Premier League win for the first time this season. After getting off to a winning start on Wednesday in his first game as Aston Villa manager, Gerard Houllier takes charge of his first Premier League match for six years in this West Midlands derby. Richard Dunne is ruled out with a knee injury and Stephen Ireland is doubtful, although Houlliers main selection dilemma surrounds whether to start with Emile Heskey after his impressive impact in midweek. wolves have no new injury worries as they look for their first league win since the opening day of the season. 100. Squad sheets: West Bromwich Albion v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Roy Hodgson is about to take charge of his first game for West Bromwich Albion, but there can be little he needs to know. He watched the side draw 3-3 with West Ham after they had led 3-0. They have scored as many league goals at home as Manchester City and ought to stay in the top flight, but they have also conceded more than anyone else in the Premier League. This match does appear promising for Albion since wolves have struggled on their travels and have so far collected just four points away from home.
