Trapattoni claims he rejected Juventus
Republic of Ireland manager says he was approached this year With a heavy heart I turned it down, he saysThe Republic of Irelands coach Giovanni Trapattoni has revealed he turned down a move to Juventus earlier this year. The 71-year-old claims he was sounded out about replacing Ciro Ferrara, who was sacked at the end of January after a poor run of results, before the Turin club appointed Alberto Zaccheroni until the end of the season."With a heavy heart I turned it down because it was impossible for me to be involved in a national team and club football," Trapattoni said. "It would not have been a serious option."Trapattoni, who coached Juventus for a total of 13 years over two spells, became the Republics manager in 2008 and he is under contract with Ireland until the end of the 2012 European Championships.Ireland, who finished runners-up to Italy in their World Cup qualifying group, missed out on a place in South Africa in a play-off against France last November.JuventusRepublic of IrelandEuropean football guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Mercedes will be an F1 contender this season, says Michael Schumacher
Our realistic possibility is to fight for podiums Red Bulls Adrian Newey turned down Ferrari approachMercedes are ready to challenge McLaren for third place when the new Formula One season starts in Melbourne on Sunday, according to the seven-times champion Michael Schumacher.Mercedes were fourth behind Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren last year. But Schumacher, 42, said: "Mercedes has taken a huge step forward with this years car. It is a very performance-orientated car and it has paid off."I think this year our realistic possibility is to fight for podiums and if things go very well, maybe to win a race. As for the championship, you have to be careful with this one. I dont think we are prepared and developed for this yet."Mercedes were initially disappointing in testing in Barcelona but then turned around their times with a stunning finish.Meanwhile, it was confirmed that the Red Bull head of design, Adrian Newey, turned down an approach from Ferrari early last year. The Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, said: "Its understandable why any team in F1 would be interested in Adrian but he is very much enjoying life at Red Bull and Im sure hell be here for years to come."Newey said: "Ive had offers from Ferrari in the past and Ive considered them seriously. But F1 is a people sport, not a marque sport."Working for Ferrari just for the sake of working for Ferrari isnt something that Im interested in."Michael SchumacherMercedes GPMcLarenMotor sportPaul Weaver guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
