Neuchatel Xamax thrown out of swiss League over financial allegations
Club failed to supply League with financial guarantees Xamax have five days to appeal against the decisionNeuchatel Xamax have been stripped of their license and removed from the swiss Super League less than a year after being taken over by the Chechen businessman Bulat Chagaev. The swiss Football League said in a statement that the decision was taken because the club was suspected of using a falsified bank document as a financial guarantee last year."The swiss Football League has taken away Neuchatel Xamaxs license for participating in championships organised by the SFL," the statement said. "The disciplinary commission has reached the conclusion that the conditions for the license are no longer met due to the non-presentation of financial guarantees."The disciplinary commission is also convinced that the banking guarantee from the Bank of America was not provided by the latter."swiss media have reported that the bank letter contained grammatical and spelling mistakes, though Chagaev strongly denies the allegation.Xamax have already had eight points deducted for irregular payment of social security contributions and players wages.Chagaev bought the club in May last year, saying he wanted to take Xamax into the Champions League. Since then, he has sacked four coaches, faced a boycott by fans and dismissed several players. He also sacked the entire administrative staff, leaving the club unable to print tickets for the opening game of the season, and parted company with all of the clubs sponsors. Chagaev has in turn accused the media of persecuting him because of his nationality. The club, whose website made no reference to Wednesdays decision but which carries earlier statements saying they feel they are being attacked from many quarters, have five days to appeal. They are next scheduled to play on 4 February at home to Lausanne Sport when matches resume after the winter break.Xamax were formed in 1970 by the merger of two clubs and the team have won the swiss league twice, in 1987 and 1988. Their expulsion, if confirmed, would mean the swiss league will be reduced to nine teams. guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Federer tames Del Potro in Holland
Former world No1 grabs his first tournament in 2012 swiss player breezes to victory in RotterdamRoger Federer outclassed Argentinas Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the World Indoor Tournament in Rotterdam on Sunday to win his first title of the year. The top seeded swiss, who also beat the 23-year-old Del Potro in the quarter-final of the Australian Open last month, dominated every rally and wrapped up the first five games before the Argentinian third seed could reply. It was a ninth win for the 30-year-old in 11 meetings with Del Potro. Federer impressed on his first break point when his volley was returned by Del Potro with a lob before the former world No1 clinched the game with a smash. In the second set Del Potro had five break points saved by Federer before the swiss converted one of his own in the fifth game to secure his name on the winners board for the second time since 2005.Roger FedererJuan Martin del PotroTennis guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Mutu forced to pay Chelsea 14.3m
Striker tested positive for cocaine in 2004 swiss Federal Court rejects Mutus final appealAdrian Mutu has been ordered to pay his former club Chelsea a record 14.3m in compensation after losing his final appeal in a legal battle which has lasted more than five years, the swiss Federal Court has announced.Mutu was sacked by Chelsea in September 2004 after testing positive for cocaine. The Romania striker received a seven-month ban from football, but the London club took a firm stance and sacked him before then suing him to recover the money they paid to sign him.Mutu rebuilt his career first at Juventus and then at Fiorentina once he was able to play again, but the incident has dogged him ever since as Fifa, the world governing body, ordered him to pay compensation to Chelsea, and his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the fine failed. He was given a glimmer of hope when the swiss Federal Court temporarily suspended the fine, but it has now decided the 31-year-old must pay the full amount plus interest. The court confirmed today that it has upheld the decision made by Fifa and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In a statement it said: "In a ruling on June 10, 2010, the swiss Federal Court rejected the appeal formed by Adrian Mutu against the decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The CAS ordered the Romanian professional footballer to pay a sum superior to a‚¬17m to his former employer, Chelsea Football Club Limited."Chelsea guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Sion confident of ousting Celtic in Europa League appeal
swiss club plan to fight decision that saw Celtic given reprieve Ultimately well succeed because Uefas position is untenableSion plan to fight Uefas decision to give Celtic a Europa League reprieve and are confident of winning their case. The swiss side beat Neil Lennons team 3-1 on aggregate in the play-offs but were thrown out by Uefa for fielding players deemed by Fifa to be ineligible due to a transfer ban, although a swiss court had ruled in their favour.Celtic were reinstated last Friday and took Sions place in the group which includes Atletico Madrid, Udinese and Rennes with the Hoops first game scheduled to take place in Spain on 15 September, although the Sion president, Christian Constantin, has reportedly booked flights and hotels in Madrid.Sions lawyer Alexandre Zen-Ruffinen insists Constantins club will win their case as Uefa defied the decision by the swiss court to allow the players to take part against Celtic. He told the Daily Record: "We received the decision of Uefa on Monday morning. Now we must obviously consider the document and then spend hours and hours to find a way to attack it."Ultimately we will succeed because their position is untenable. By rights Uefa have to comply with the laws of its own country. But by refusing to consider the decision of a swiss judge, they did just the opposite."Specifically, those players entered the civil justice system to qualify, so it is not acceptable. The next few days are vital because the appeal decision must be known by next Monday so we can play the game in good condition."A spokesman for Atletico told the Daily Record: "Right now we dont know who we are going to face in the Europa League, so we cant plan anything."CelticEuropa LeagueUefa guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Delhi Commonwealth Games organiser arrested in corruption investigation
Suresh Kalmadi accused of favouring swiss company when buying equipment for Delhi eventIndian officials have arrested the chief organiser of last years Commonwealth Games as part of a corruption investigation into the scandal-plagued competition in New Delhi.India had hoped that the Games would help it project the image of a rising superpower, but instead it was embarrassed by corruption allegations, construction delays and cost overruns as the budget ballooned to 700 billion rupees (9.1bn) from an estimated 18.9 billion rupees.Suresh Kalmadi, the highest-ranking member of the organising committee to be arrested, has been charged with conspiracy for allegedly favouring a swiss company in the purchase of equipment for timing and scoring events, said a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) spokeswoman, Dharini Mishra. Two other officials on the organising committee - Lalit Bhanot and VK Verma - were arrested earlier in the same case. The CBI claims the government was cheated out of 1.41 billion rupees paid to swiss Timings Ltd for equipment available from another company for much less.IndiaCommonwealth Games 2010 guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Johan Djourou could be back for Arsenal before end of season
swiss FA says shoulder injury less serious than feared Arsene Wenger had ruled defender out for title run-inThe Arsenal defender Johan Djourou may yet be able to play again this season, according to the swiss Football Association. The centre-half was ruled out by Arsene Wenger for the rest of the campaign after dislocating his shoulder during Saturdays FA Cup quarter-final defeat at Manchester United.Wengers initial fears look to have been eased after extensive tests and the 24-year-old could return by the end of the month. Switzerland hope Djourou may even be available for their Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria on 26 March.A statement from the swiss FA read: "The shoulder injury to Johan Djourou is less serious than feared and announced by the coach of his club. He was submitted to thorough medical examinations on Monday. At the end of a long exhausting day, he had new hope that his season is not over yet."Djourou, who missed nearly all of the 2009-10 season with a serious knee injury, has not suffered any fractures, while ligament damage is suggested "not to be in a serious condition".With Thomas Vermaelen having not played since the end of August because of a niggling achilles injury, the early return of Djourou would be a boost to Arsenal as they look to salvage their season by winning the Premier League title.ArsenalSwitzerland guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Uefa dismisses Sions appeal against ban from Europa League
Court of arbitration will rule on swiss clubs ban Uefa dismisses ruling in swiss civil courtUefa has dismissed FC Sions attempts to be reinstated into the Europa League through the swiss civil courts. European footballs governing body said it will instead await the judgment of the court of arbitration for sport on the issue.Sion claimed this month that the civil court of the Canton of Vaud ruled that Uefa should immediately reinstate them in the competition and pay the club damages.Uefas executive committee had held an extraordinary meeting on Monday to discuss the case following the court ruling.A Uefa statement read: "The executive committee of Uefa unanimously stated that it had no statutory authority to reinstate FC Sion as this was the sole prerogative of the disciplinary instances of Uefa, which operate under the statutes in an independent manner with no influence whatsoever from the Uefa administration or Uefa executive committee. As the Uefa disciplinary bodies have twice ruled on this case, the Uefa executive committee unanimously decided to await the court of arbitration for sport decision on the merits of the case."Sion were expelled by Uefa on 2 September for fielding ineligible players in their play-off against Celtic, with their place in the Europa League awarded to the Scottish Premier League side. The swiss club appealed against the decision but the appeal was rejected on 13 September and Celtic have played in two group ties, against Atletico Madrid and Udinese.Europa League 2011-12UefaEuropa LeagueEuropean football guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
