South Africas Francois Steyn confirms his return to face Wales
Full-back available after healing rift with Peter De Villiers Frans confirmed his loyalty to the springboks, says coachThe South Africa back Francois Steyn has confirmed he will be available for next weekends Test against Wales in Cardiff. Steyn, part of the springboks World Cup-winning squad in 2007, attended talks in Johannesburg with the head coach, Peter de Villiers, after reports that the 23-year-old had pulled out of the match because of a rift between the pair.Steyn, who is set to start at full-back against Warren Gatlands Wales, has not played for his country since moving to France to join Racing Metro in September. But he will now add to his 36 caps at the Millennium Stadium in eight days time after the talks, which also included the Springbok selector Peter Jooste and Steyns agent, Gerrie Swart, reached a successful conclusion. The South African Rugby Union said: "Frans Steyn has confirmed his availability for the springboks in their Test match against Wales in Cardiff on 5 June, following a meeting with Springbok coach Peter de Villiers in Johannesburg on Friday.""We discussed our relationship over the past few months and certain concerns of Frans were addressed and resolved," De Villiers said. springboks vow to help Joost van der Westhuizen after tragic prognosis
Former scrum-half diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs disease Van der Westhuizen given up to five years to liveThe South Africa captain John Smit says the springboks will do anything they can to support Joost van der Westhuizen after the former scrum-half was given between two and five years to live.South African media reports say the 40-year-old World Cup winner, who played 89 tests for his country between 1993 and 2003, was confirmed as suffering from an incurable motor neuron disease by an expert in the United States."Its tragic for a guy of his stature," Smit said in Wellington, where the springboks play the All Blacks in a Tri-Nations test this weekend."Ive been in touch with Joost quite a bit and its sad to think about what he was and what hes going to be. I spoke to him some weeks ago and you can see the deterioration already. Its traumatic for an individual like that, a young father. Well do whatever we can when we get back to support him."Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is also known as Lou Gehrigs disease after the New York Yankees baseball player who was diagnosed with it in 1939, is a degenerative disease which usually results in death from respiratory problems.Van der Westhuizen, the first of the big international scrum-halves who now largely dominate the game, was famous for his aggressive sniping around the fringes and fierce tackling.Part of the springboks World Cup-winning team of 1995 before captaining his country at the 1999 World Cup, he still shares the record of most test tries (38) scored by a South African along with winger Bryan Habana.South Africa rugby teamRugby union guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
