If youre thinking of a tennis resolution for the new year, developing a better second serve should be a leading candidate--unless you already have an excellent twist serve. Roddicks Huge serve Not Enough
Andy Roddicks serve is by far his most outstanding weapon, and when his groundstrokes and volleys back it up, hes a major contender at the biggest of all tournaments, such as Wimbledon, where he was a finalist in in 2004, 2005 and 2009. As John Isner and Nicholas Mahut showed last week, though, it can be tough work to win a match if your return of serve lags far behind the quality of your serve, and Roddicks return was lagging on Monday, when the #82 player in the world, Yen-Hsun Lu, upset him 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-7, 9-7....Read Full [detalii...]

Slower US Open Courts Good for Nadal
As at Roland Garros this year, the semifinals at the US Open will be played by the top four seeds. Rafael Nadal had the easiest quarterfinal of the four, dismissing Andy Roddick 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 on Friday. Roddick had some leg issues, but even Andys huge serve was ineffective, as he won only 63% of first-serve points and 32% on his second serve, while Rafa won 84% and 55% respectively. With the US Open courts playing slower this year, pace, such as on Andys serve, in less effective, and topspin, such as on Rafas serve and even more so on his exceptionally topspun forehand, is more effective. If Rafa gets past Andy Murray in the semis, he will face the winner of Roger Federer vs. Novak Djokovic. The slower court would help Nadal against Djokovic, but it would help him much more against Federer, as it would enhance his favorite tactic, using topspin to kick the ball up on Rogers [detalii...]

Unseeded Sabine Lisickis average first serve speed was 112 mph, 14 mph faster than those of third seed Li Na, whom she upset in Wimbledons second round on Thursday. Nadal serves up warning to rivals
World No1 beats Gabashvili without conceding a break Nadal: If I want to win here I need to serve really well Rafael Nadal made a confident start in his effort to complete a career grand slam by winning 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in a heavy-hitting contest against the Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili at the US Open.Looking comfortable on the fast Arthur Ashe centre court, and with a newly powerful serve, the 24-year-old Nadal claimed the first two tie-breaks by 7-4.Nadal, the world No1 and the first seed, who topped 130mph on his fastest serve, registered the first service break of the match when the 93rd-ranked Gabashvili netted an easy forehand in the seventh game. Nadal then closed out the match with another break."My serve tonight worked well," said the eight-times grand slam winner, who needs a US Open title to complete a career grand slam. "Hopefully it will continue like this. My serve is not my best shot but I always try hard to keep improving and thats what Im working on all the time."The Spaniard produced seven aces and a first-serve success rate of 67% in a match that lasted nearly three hours. "I know if I want to have chances to win here I need to serve really, really well, so thats one of the things I am most focused on," said Nadal, the winner of this years French Open and Wimbledon championships who now plays Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the second round.US Open tennisRafael NadalTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Lopezs Lefty Advantage and Improved Backhand Upset Roddick
Feliciano Lopez had lost to Andy Roddick in all seven of their previous matches, but on Friday in Wimbledons third round, he upset the eighth seed 7-6(2), 7-6(2), 6-4. The first-serve statistics for the match reflect the tightness of the set scores. Lopez landed 66% of his first serves at an average speed of 121 mph; Roddick landed 63% at an average of 122. Lopez won 81% of his first-serve points, Roddick 78%. Lopez shares a major advantage on serves with his fellow Spaniard, Rafael Nadal: hes a lefty. When a lefty like Lopez hits a topspin-slice serve out wide, it curves away from a righty like Roddicks backhand, and neither a two-handed backhand like Roddicks nor a one-hander can do as much when stretched wide as a forehand can. A righty can use a twist serve to make the ball curve away from a righty opponents backhand, but the twist serve has much more kick than sidespin, so its harder to stretch the opponent as wide as can a topspin-slice serve, which can be mostly sidespin. Roddick attacked at the net 44 times, 8 more than Lopez, but he won only 55% of those points, whereas Lopez won 64%, largely because Andy came in on some approach shots that gave Feliciano too good an opportunity to execute a passing shot. Roddick may have underestimated Lopezs backhand passing shot, as Feliciano has gotten much better at hitting the one-handed topspin; he used to rely almost entirely on the slice. Murray battles against serve and Falla
Top seed wins 7-6, 6-1 to reach Farmers Classic semi-finals British No1s first-serve percentage sits at just 42%Andy Murray claimed a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Alejandro Falla to reach the semi-finals of the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles. The top seed had to battle against his serve as much as his opponent, but eventually battled through.Murrays first-serve percentage was just 42% for the match and an incredible 38% for the second set, but he met an opponent who struggled as much as he did. And after battling through a tough opening set, the second, despite his service struggles, was far simpler as Murray, without a coach after he split with Miles Maclagan this week, sealed a last-four clash with Feliciano Lopez. The first set went with serve until Murray made the most of the first break-point opportunity of the match to go 3-2 up, but he could not consolidate as Falla levelled immediately at 3-3. Murray created two break points in the seventh game of the set but could not convert, and Falla did likewise before the British No1 held for 4-4.With the set deadlocked, a tie-break was required to settle it, and Murray initially dominated, taking the first three points, only for Falla fought back to 3-3.Finally Murray stamped his authority on the match, though, winning four points in a row to take the set. The pair exchanged breaks at the start of the second set, but from there on in it was all Murray. He won five games in a row in the second set to end Fallas resistance as the Colombian failed to take advantage of Murrays below-par delivery.Andy MurrayTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Wimbledon 2011: Bernard Tomic blasts past Xavier Malisse
Tomic wins 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in less than an hour and a half Australian teenager reaches first grand slam quarter-finalThe Australian teenager Bernard Tomic sprinted into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon with a crushing win over Xavier Malisse on Court 18.The 18-year-old qualifier, who knocked out the No5 seed, Robin Soderling, in straight sets on Saturday, continued his impressive tournament by dispatching his Belgian opponent 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in just an hour and 21 minutes. The win extends his best run at a grand slam event, although his quarter-final opponent, one of Michael Llodra or Novak Djokovic, is sure to test him more than the out-of-sorts Malisse. The world No42 was broken in just the second game of the opening set, Tomic hitting a forehand winner, and, when he lost his serve again in the fourth, he exchanged words with the umpire. He was unhappy with the stringing on his rackets, even going as far as suggesting they had been strung by an Australian, while he also took issue with a number of line calls made on both his and Tomics serve. The 30-year-old recovered to hold serve for the first time in the sixth game but, when Tomic sent another forehand down the line, the first set was up.Malisse was a lot steadier in the second set, taking three service games to love but Tomic also held serve at the other end though, and, when he returned a Malisse serve with an unstoppable forehand he had a set point which he duly took.Malisse did well to stave off three break points in the fifth game of the third set, but was then unable to take his first two chances to break the Tomic serve in the next game. Distracted by his failure to do so, he again gave Tomic three more chances to break in the ninth game, which the youngster took before serving out the match.Wimbledon 2011WimbledonTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Murray beats Lopez at Valencia Open
Top-seed Murray starts with straight-sets win Nicolas Almagro beaten by Daniel Gimeno-TraverAndy Murray recorded an impressive straight-sets win over Feliciano Lopez in the first round of the Valencia Open 500.The world number 31, playing on home territory, represented a tough first-round draw for the British number one and defending champion, but he eased through the first set after breaking in Lopezs second service game.He had to come from a break down and later save two set points in the second, but romped through a tie-break to win 6-3 7-6 (7-1).Murrays first two service games followed the same pattern as the Scot raced to 40-0 but he needed all three opportunities to serve out the game.Lopez responded with a love game in between times. Indeed, it took Murray seven attempts to win a point on the Spaniards serve - but he added the next three to break and lead 3-1.He extended that advantage with a love hold featuring his first two aces and was similarly untroubled in his next service game to lead 5-2.Lopez held and forced him to serve out - which he did to wrap up a half-hour set 6-3 with five aces.A Lopez double-fault set Murray on his way to a 0-30 lead in game three of the second set but Lopez responded with four straight points, sealing the game with an ace.Murray was broken in the next game as Lopez lifted the spirits of the home crowd by taking a 3-1 lead and, though he was pushed to the first deuce of the match in the next game, battled through on second serve to take the game.Murray held and again raced to 0-30 on the Lopez serve, forcing his first two break points of the set as the match ticked past the hour mark and taking the first to put it back on serve. He then held to level at 4-4.The top seed saved two set points when serving at 5-4 down and levelled once more. Lopez then held to love to leave him serving to stay in the set once more, which he did to force a tie-break.Murray quickly established an advantage by winning two points on his opponents serve and added both on his own to set up five match points. He needed only one as he took advantage of a Lopez second serve to complete victory in an hour and 26 minutes.Andy MurrayTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Venus Williams beats Patty Schnyder in French Open despite trouble with serve
Venus Williams beats Patty Schnyder 6-3 6-3 World No2 faces Parra or Nara in second roundVenus Williams overcame major problems with her serve by dismantling her opponents to reach the second round of the French Open. The five-time Wimbledon champion was broken three times by Patty Schnyder - twice to love - on Suzanne Lenglen Court. But her court coverage allowed her to break serve herself on six occasions as she ran out a 6-3 6-3 winner. The world No2 - who has never lifted the womens singles crown at Roland Garros - will now play either Arantxa Parra Santonja or Kurumi Nara in round two.Williams, who had won all 10 of her previous matches with the world No61 Schnyder, looked capable of running away with their latest encounter when she broke in the very first game. A miserable service game saw the American immediately broken back to love, although she regained her advantage to move 3-1 ahead. The first set appeared over when Williams served at 5-2 but Schnyder took advantage of more poor play before losing her own serve once more. The second set followed a similar pattern, Williams saving break point in game three before breaking herself. But again she instantly lost her serve to love, ultimately allowing her Swiss opponent to level. That was as good as it got for Schnyder as Williams held and broke again before wasting several match points en route to victory.French OpenVenus WilliamsTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Unseeded Janko Tipsarevic played a smart, composed, and extremely well executed match in the second round of the US Open Wednesday night to earn a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(4) upset of ninth seed Andy Roddick. Roddicks serve often keeps him competitive in matches where his other strokes arent as strong as his opponents, but Andys 17 aces and 3 double faults were at best equal to Tipsarevics 16 aces and 1 double fault, and Tipsarevic had 66 winners to Andys 40. David Ferrer sees off Nicolas Almagro to win Mexican Open
David Ferrer beats Nicolas Almagro 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 Gisela Dulko beats Arantxa Parra Santonja to win womens titleDavid Ferrer successfully defended his Abierto Mexicano Telcel Open title with victory over Nicolas Almagro in the final in Acapulco.Neither player could make the most of the four breaks of serve they shared in the opening set, and in the end it was Ferrer who secured the tie-break 7-4. Almagro, who was seeking a third-straight ATP Tour title, battled back bravely in the second set and took the match to a decider by winning another tie-break 7-2.But the effort of dragging himself back into the contest seemed to sap Almagro of energy, and Ferrer quickly broke twice early in the final set on his way to taking it 6-2 and securing an 11th career title.Argentinas Gisela Dulko defeated Arantxa Parra Santonja in the womens final to claim her first WTA singles title for almost three years. Dulko always looked threatening on her opponents serve during the opening set, and she secured four breaks of serve to take it 6-3.The second set was a tighter affair and Dulko crucially broke Santonjas serve as the Spaniard served for the set before winning the tie-break 7-5.Tennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Sam showed impressive mental toughness by playing a strong third set after losing a tie-break she had come so close to winning. Maria is fun to watch because shes extremely quick and more eager to attack at the net than most; she came in 51 times, winning 31 of those points. Serena Williams brushes past Shahar Peer to reach quarter-finals
Williams survives service blip to win 6-2, 6-2 Potential last-eight match with Justine Henin awaitsSerena Williams stayed on course for a French Open quarter-final with Justine Henin after overpowering Shahar Peer in the fourth round.Williams watched sister Venus go out of the womens singles at Roland Garros yesterday but there was little danger of the world No1 following suit as she sealed a 6-2 6-2 victory after one hour and seven minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. The 28-year-old struggled to hold serve at times and was broken twice but fashioned an impressive six breaks of her own to set up a clash with either Henin - in what would be a rematch of the Australian Open final - or Samantha Stosur.Todays match was Williams first meeting with Peer in a grand slam since a remarkable Australian Open quarter-final three years ago, which saw the American fight back from 4-1 down in the deciding set before going on to lift the title.Williams had won their other three matches in straight sets but lost the first seven points here, dropping serve in the process. She won the next five to break straight back before Peer dropped serve again in games six and eight. Both players saved break points early in the second set before Williams made one count in game four. A brilliant backhand from Peer got the set back on serve but she was unable to hold in the next game and Williams broke her again to love for the win.French OpenSerena WilliamsTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Dominant Venus Williams cruises into French Open third round
World number two brushes aside Arantxa Parra Santonja Williams was not broken once during 6-2 6-4 victoryVenus Williams serve clicked into gear as she brushed aside Arantxa Parra Santonja to reach the third round of the French Open for the ninth successive year.World number two Williams had serious problems holding in her opening win over Patty Schnyder but was not broken once in a 6-2 6-4 success on an overcast Philippe Chatrier Court.Indeed, it was her opponent who struggled on serve, Williams breaking the Spaniard three times to set up a match with 26th seed Dominika Cibulkova or fellow American Varvara Lepchenko.Williams problems looked set to continue when she conceded break point in her opening service game, but the 29-year-old eventually held before breaking her Spanish opponent the very next game.World number 59 Parra Santonja continued to afford break points to her rival in an error-strewn performance and handed her serve to Williams for a second time in game seven before the American served out the set.Parra Santonja, 27, saved another break point in the opening game of the second set, which went with serve until game seven, when Williams produced her best tennis of the match. She broke with a volleyed winner, having previously made numerous errors at the net in the match. Parra Santonja had two break-back points in a marathon game eight but Williams held before serving out for victory in one hour 35 minutes.French OpenVenus WilliamsTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

How Kvitova Defeated Sharapova to Win Wimbledon
Petra Kvitova defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday to claim the Wimbledon singles championship, her first major title. Kvitova played at her best through almost the entire match, avoiding any of the long lapses that have troubled her in the past. She used her lefty serve cleverly, forcing Sharapova to be either too close or too far from the ball to hit her best returns. Petra often curved the ball into Maria, who couldnt move far enough away to let her long arms take a full swing, or, on the ad side, served from several feet to the left of the center mark so that she could enhance the angle on her lefty topspin-slice hit out wide, the slice component of which curves away from Marias backhand, making her stretch too far to deliver a powerful return. Petra landed 66% of her first serves at an average speed of 99 mph and won 72% of those points. Sharapova usually hits her groundstrokes with extraordinary power and depth, but Kvitovas were significantly better on both counts. Kvitova delivers her power with great biomechanical efficiency, using clean, uncomplicated strokes that make great use of her legs, especially in driving forward. The depth, power, and angles on Petras groundstrokes kept Maria from setting up to get her weight behind enough of her own groundstrokes, so they often landed short, further enhancing Petras chances to be aggressive. Marias serves also offered Petra more opportunities to attack than they should have; Maria landed an impressive 76% of first serves at an average speed of 100 mph, but she won only 58% of those points, largely because she wasnt stretching or jamming Petra as well as Petra was doing to her. Sharapovas second serve was especially vulnerable, as she won only 27% of those points and double faulted six times. Maria had her best results when she hit her heaviest kick on the second serve, a tactic that, used more often, should also reduce her double faults. Roger Federer needs two tie-breaks to beat Florent Serra in Miami
No1 seed beats Florent Serra 7-6, 7-6 Andy Murrays conqueror Mardy Fish wins againRoger Federer reached the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami but was made to sweat by the Frenchman Florent Serra. The top seed won 7-6, 7-6 in 1hr 32min, taking the tie-breaks emphatically, to set up a meeting with Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.Federer dropped his serve three times but converted three of the eight break-point chances he had, including two in the second set, and held his serve when it counted.Serra was let down by his first serve, making only 49%, but Federer, too, will look in the next round to improve on his mark of 58%.Berdych, the 16th seed, was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Horacio Zeballos of Argentina. A single break gave him the first set and two more followed in the second, Zeballos claiming one of his own.The American Mardy Fish, Andy Murrays conqueror, won again with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the 29th seed Feliciano Lopez. Fish created 13 break points and, though he converted only two, he saved the two he faced to claim victory.Roger FedererTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Nadal Defeats Improved Federer to Win Sixth French Open
Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-1 on Sunday to tie Bjorn Borgs record of six Roland Garros singles titles. The good news for Roger is that he played better against Rafa than he had in their past four meetings at Roland Garros. Roger had a set point at 5-2 in the first set and hit a backhand drop shot that landed a fraction of an inch wide. Had he won that point, the match might have gone quite differently, because after that ball landed just wide, Rogers level of play fell off significantly. His first serve percentage dropped from around 80% up to that point to around 50% through the rest of the first set and halfway into the second. The serve is the one shot over which you have complete control, so a sudden drop in serving percentage, barring any concurrent change in weather, almost always indicates a mental letdown. The first serve is crucial for Roger, as he won 69% of points when his first serve went in, but only 39% when he had to hit a second serve. After falling behind with lackluster play in the second set, Roger bounced back well enough to bring it to a tiebreak, and he sustained his stronger play to win the third set. Most noticeably improved was Rogers backhand, with which he hit with better depth, giving Rafa fewer balls to attack. Having everyone attack his backhand relentlessly has helped Roger make it stronger. He took more backhands on the rise, keeping them from kicking quite as high on him, and when he got a slightly shorter ball, he produced a good number of backhand winners. Still, Roger had 56 unforced errors for the match, slightly more than his 53 winners. Rafas mere 27 unforced errors in a match of 273 points is one indication of how well he performed. As usual, his defense was extraordinary, often forcing Roger to hit several brilliant shots to win a point. Rogers better depth gave Rafa fewer opportunities to hit winners, but he still produced 39, the most impressive of which came from his forehand. For the most part, Rafa hit his first serve with more spin than power, and as a result, he got 72% of his first serves in, but he showed his intelligence early in the fourth set, when he realized that Roger was tuning into his spin serves to the backhand too well, and he responded by serving significantly harder and going to the forehand more, which threw Roger off. Expect to see that harder Rafa serve much more at Wimbledon, where ball speed is rewarded more and spin less than on clay. We should also expect Roger to enter Wimbledon with good confidence, having defeated the hottest player in tennis, Novak Djokovic, in the Roland Garros semis and then playing his best yet against Rafa on the court where Rafa plays better than anyone ever has. Murray sent tumbling out of Queens
Beaten 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 following collapse of serve in tie-break Setback for Scot ahead of Wimbledon assaultAndy Murray has lost his grip of the Aegon Championships title after crumbling in the decisive tie-break of his third-round match with Mardy Fish at Queens Club.Resuming the match this afternoon with the score locked at 4-6, 6-1, 3-3, the world No4 lost the final set 6-7 in what was a major setback to his preparations for Wimbledon. Both players easily held serve as the match restarted amid grey skies at Queens Club with a quarter-final place against Michael Llodra awaiting the winner. It took until the fourth game of the day before a point was registered on the opponents serve when Murray found the net. The Scot had won 12 straight points on serve and a tie-break was needed to separate the rivals.Fluffing a simple backhand, Murray bounced his racket on to the ground in frustration and then fired a long forehand as the tension grew.Fish secured four match points and Murray, who now looked horribly out of sorts, fired a backhand long to concede the match. The match was controversially halted at 8.30pm last night due to bad light - a decision that infuriated Murray. He had just pegged back a 3-0 deficit in the final set and felt Fishs appeal to the umpire, Cedric Mourier, was an act of gamesmanship.Mourier accepted Fishs pleas and the American walked off, leaving Murray waiting to resume play until he realised what had happened and angrily confronted the official.Andy MurrayTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Andy Murray eases through to third round of Madrid Open
Andy Murray beats Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3, 6-3Andy Murray progressed through to the third round of the Madrid Open tonight with a straight-sets victory over the qualifier Juan Ignacio Chela. An out-of-sorts Murray had won just one match in his previous three tournaments, but he doubled that tally with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win on the clay of La Caja Magica. The world No4, who is seeded third and received a bye in the first found, rarely looked in trouble against the veteran Argentinian and he will now play the Romanian Victor Hanescu in the third round.Murray enjoyed an excellent start, finding a mixture of big forehands, well-placed backhands and delicate drop shots and losing only a single point in winning the opening three games, including two service breaks. The Scot then lost his way slightly, winning three points over the next two games as Chela clawed back to 3-2. However, Murray quickly stopped Chelas attempted fightback by holding his next two service games to love and then breaking Chela for the third time in the 10th game to take the set.Chela broke Murrays serve at the beginning of the second set, but Murray was quick to cancel that out, breaking back immediately following a lengthy battle which ended when Chela fired a simple forehand into the net.The next three games went to serve before Murray made the decisive break in the sixth game to go 4-2 ahead. He then held serve to establish a 5-2 lead. The 22-year-old, who won the Madrid title in 2008 when it was played on hard court, missed three match points on the next Chela serve, but then held his own to complete the victory in the following game.Andy MurrayTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Murray stays perfect against Montanes
Briton through to quarter-finals at China Open Murray has yet to concede a set to SpaniardBritains Andy Murray maintained his stranglehold over the Spaniard Albert Montanes today with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the second round of the China Open in Beijing. The British No1, who needed only 74 minutes to overcome the French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-3 in his first-round match on Tuesday, has now faced Montanes four times and is still yet to concede a set to the Spaniard.Todays straight-sets triumph secured the Scot a quarter-final berth against either Croatias Ivan Ljubicic or Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine. The first four games went with serve - Murray winning both of his to love - but the Scot then received a shock in game five when Montanes capitalised on his fourth break point with a stunning cross-court backhand winner.Murray squandered a gilt-edged break-back opportunity at 3-4 and found himself serving to stay in the set in the following game, but held nervelessly to force his 29-year-old opponent to serve it out. With the prospect of taking his first set against Murray looming large, the errors crept in for Montanes and a forehand winner on the second seeds third break point proved decisive and got the match back on serve. From there, Murray did not look back. He breezed through his next service game and then broke his rival for a second time to secure the set 7-5.Montanes refused to lie down, and raced back into contention by winning the first two games of the second set. That was as good as it got for the world No24, though, as the 23-year-old from Dunblane reeled off five straight games to put himself firmly in control. Montanes held to love to force Murray to serve out, which he did with little difficulty.Andy MurrayTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Wimbledon 2011: Briton Katie OBrien becomes first player eliminated
Kimiko Date-Krumm beats Katie OBrien 6-0, 7-5 British No5 makes swift Wimbledon exitBritains Katie OBrien became the first player to go out of this years Wimbledon as she suffered a 6-0, 7-5 defeat against the Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm.It took only 17 minutes for Date-Krumm to wrap up the first set after an error-strewn start for Britains No5. OBrien performed with much more promise in the second set but she was ultimately no match for the 40-year-old Date-Krumm, who rounded off victory in a tougher second set.Home supporters on the new Court Three may have had high hopes for the Briton, but their confidence was soon sapped after the first-set whitewash. OBrien made a dreadful start, double-faulting to hand Date-Krumm an opening break before her opponent held serve comfortably.OBrien again double-faulted on the second of two break points to give Date-Krumm a 3-0 lead before a third double in the fifth gave Date-Krumm three break points. She needed just one, dropping a cheeky slice at the net before the former world No4 served out for the first set.Sensing the Briton was low on confidence, the crowd got behind OBrien and she responded at the beginning of the second set, with more guile in her serve and baseline strokes. The 25-year-old powered down her first ace and Date-Krumm then went long to give the Briton her first game of the match. The Yorkshire players attempt to stay in touch with Date-Krumm stuttered in the third game when she lost her service after she was unable to return a strong cross-court backhand.OBrien showed promise as she broke Date-Krumms serve back to level the set at 2-2, but her own service let her down again as the 40-year-old took the lead once more.OBrien pulled it back to 3-3 but she lost her serve again. The home player then rallied with a much-improved performance to stay in the game before Date-Krumm won a tight line call to leave OBrien serving to stay in the match at 5-3 down. She saved one match point before holding on to leave Date-Krumm with a chance to serve out for the match. The Japanese faltered, to allow OBrien to pull back to 5-5, before she came back to win two successive games to clinch the match.Wimbledon 2011WimbledonTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Murrays tactics overcome Nalbandian
Murray was a set down before switching to serve and volley Despite wrist injury, world No4 recovers to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3Watching Andy Murray serve and volley his way to victory over David Nalbandian at the Paris Masters here today, it was as if we had been transported back to a time when Pete Sampras and Boris Becker used to throw themselves around the net during the indoor season. Outplayed for a set and a half by an inspired Nalbandian, Murray changed his strings, his tactics and his fortunes, hammering 18 aces on his way to a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory and a place in the third round.A minor scare concerning his right wrist early in the deciding set briefly threatened to derail his progress and must have had his support group squirming in their seats, with the ATP World Tour Finals in London beginning a week on Sunday. But after some brief treatment Murray duly wrapped up a victory that was a reward for a tactical adjustment that could pay dividends in the future as he continues his quest for grand slam glory.Pat Rafter and Tim Henman, two of the best recent exponents of serve and volleying, would surely have been proud as Murray picked blistering Nalbandian returns off his toes with volleys that forced the Argentinian into mistakes he had not made in the first set."I volleyed really well and I felt really comfortable up at the net," Murray said, adding that last weeks doubles win with his brother Jamie in Valencia had sharpened him up. "I just needed to do something different because I couldnt win a point from the back of the court."The first set was over almost before it had begun as Nalbandian, back up to No 25 in the rankings after missing much of 2009 through injury, ripped winners and served flawlessly, dropping just three points on his own serve and breaking twice to wrap it up 33 minutes. At the start of the second set, Murray sent his rackets to be restrung, looking for a tighter tension in an effort to get greater control. More good serving kept him in the second set until the restrung rackets returned, upon which Nalbandian played his worst game of the match to lose serve and take the match into a decider. With the scores level at 2-2 in the third, Murray then winced in pain after a half-volley on the baseline, prompting looks of anguish among his support group. Their minds were surely going back to Murrays two previous wrist injuries, the most serious of which kept him out for three months in 2007. The Scot called the trainer but after a brief discussion he was back on court and dispelled any doubts about his fitness by holding serve to lead 3-2.From that moment on, there was a strange sense of inevitability about the outcome of the match and two errors, a brilliant backhand return from Murray and then another errant forehand handed the world No4 the vital break for 5-3. Four points later the match was over as Murray served out to love, fittingly clinching the match with another fine serve and volley.Murrays game and wrist will be put to the test again when he plays Marin Cilic, the Croat whom he beat to reach the final of the Australian Open in January, in the next round. "It might come down to one break or a couple of points in the set," he said. "Hes got a big serve so if I dont serve well, that will make it difficult for me. If I serve like I did in the second and third sets today, I will give myself some a good chance of winning."Andy MurrayTennisSimon Cambers guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Why Isner is Tough for Nadal
If John Isner serves well, which he usually does, he almost always holds serve, forcing the set into a tie-break, where continued strong serving and just one great return can win him a set. Isner won two sets in his 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-4 marathon against Rafael Nadal on Tuesday at Roland Garros and very nearly scored a historic upset. John is a difficult opponent for Rafa beyond his huge serve, which is tough for everyone, because he diminishes one of Nadals key weapons. Nadals forehand has more topspin than almost any in tennis history, and he uses that spin to force opponents to meet the ball higher than theyd like, but at 69", Isner likes a ball higher than most, and with a two-handed backhand, like Novak Djokovics, hes even less vulnerable. Nadals recipe for beating Roger Federer at Roland Garros, kicking the ball up on his one-handed backhand, isnt nearly as effective against an extremely tall two-hander like Inser--or against a fairly tall two-hander like [detalii...]

Murray loses to Baghdatis in Rotterdam
Cypriot wins 6-4, 6-1 in World Tennis Tournament Murray crumbles in first match since Australian Open finalAndy Murray has crashed out of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam after a straight-sets defeat by Marcos Baghdatis in the first round.Beaten by Novak Djokovic last month in the Australian Open final, Murray chose the Dutch event for his return. But after a bright start his level dipped, and the 2009 champion lost 6-4, 6-1.Murray had won his most recent match against the Cypriot, in the third round at the French Open last year, but Baghdatis had beaten the Scot in two earlier meetings, including their Wimbledon match in 2006.Baghdatis, 20th in the world and hopeful of a return to the top 10, is an almost unplayable opponent when in the mood. The early signs were this would not rank as one of his better days, but that soon changed.Murray broke the 25-year-olds serve twice at the start of the match, but Baghdatis also claimed a break and consolidated it to edge back to 2-3. When he pegged Murray back to 4-4, and then held serve to lead, the contest was on.The Scot was powerless to stop Baghdatis breaking serve for a third time to take the opening set. When Baghdatis forced another break in the fourth game of the second set to sweep 3-1 in front of a flagging Murray, he had victory in sight and it was not long in arriving.Andy MurrayTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
