  39. Peter Crouchs red card ruined the quarter-final, says Jose Mourinho

Real coach says striker should have controlled himself Its a bit sad as I prefer authentic football matchesPeter Crouchs red card ruined Tuesdays Champions League quarter-final first leg, according to the Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho. The nine-times winners ruthlessly punished the England strikers indiscipline, crushing Tottenham 4-0 after he was sent off in the 15th minute following two bookings for lunging tackles. It leaves Real completely in control of the tie ahead of next weeks second leg, and set to face rivals and 2009 winners Barcelona or Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals."Peter should have controlled himself better having already been booked," Mourinho said."We had one team completely stuck at the back without any chance of responding. The game could have been completely different and its a bit sad as I prefer authentic football matches."Emmanuel Adebayor scored twice in the match, making it ten goals in ten matches against Spurs, including eight in nine games for Arsenal."I am very happy when I play against Spurs as I always have a chance to score, so now we have to concentrate on the second game to go through to the semi-finals."Tottenhams William Gallas, another former Arsenal player who also had a spell under Mourinho at Chelsea, said the 4-0 defeat was possibly the worst of his career."Its very difficult to accept it, especially for a defender. Now we have to forget about what happened tonight and think about the next game. We have to score 5 goals - anything can happen."Jose MourinhoTottenham HotspurReal MadridChampions League guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

  40. Portugals Nani apologises to Cristiano Ronaldo after goal gaffe

Manchester United winger denies Ronaldo stunning goal It was a great piece of play and I shouldnt have ruined itThe Portugal winger Nani has apologised to his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo after denying the Real Madrid winger a memorable goal in their sides 4-0 friendly mauling of the world champions Spain.Ronaldo looked to have put Portugal ahead with a superb effort in the first half, after cleverly turning inside Gerard Pique before scooping his shot over Iker Casillas. The stunning effort was dropping into the net but Nani raced in from an offside position to head the ball in from point-blank range, leading to the goal being disallowed."I touched the ball because I thought I wasnt offside. Everything happened so quickly," explained Nani. "After having time to think about it I apologised to Ronaldo. It was a great piece of play and I shouldnt have ruined it."Ronaldo, who threw his captains armband on to the pitch in anger after the goal was disallowed, felt the ball had already crossed the line before Nani got to it."I dont understand, even a blind man could see it was a goal. The ball was half a metre into the net," he told Marca. "I dont know if its a coincidence or not but my best goals with the national team are being disallowed. I remember an overhead kick in the Bessa stadium which wasnt given."The incident did not end up costing Portugal dear as they would go on to record an emphatic victory over their Iberian neighbours, gaining some measure of revenge for their World Cup exit in the process. Spain beat Portugal in the last 16 in South Africa before going on to be crowned world champions for the first time.Cristiano RonaldoPortugal guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

  42. Chelsea captain John Terry says Wembley pitch ruined final

Its probably the worst weve played on all year It was not good enough for a Wembley pitchJohn Terry was delighted to complete Chelseas first Double but he was scathing about the much-maligned Wembley surface. "The pitch ruined the final," he said after his sides 1-0 win against Portsmouth. "Its probably the worst weve played on all year. It was not good enough for a Wembley pitch. The FA have to decide if this is a football pitch or an events stadium."Terrys complaints come after Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, called the Wembley surface "a disgrace" following his sides semi-final defeat by Portsmouth last month. "For any professional team to have to play football on that is farcical," he said. The Chelsea manager, though, was milder in his assessment. Carlo Ancelotti said: "In the semi-final it was a different problem, with the players sliding. Now it was different. [It was still] not so good but the players didnt slide."Ancelotti said Chelsea would celebrate the first League and FA Cup Double of the clubs history, sealed by Didier Drogbas second-half free-kick, with "champagne and wine" and then claimed the side needed no additions to win next seasons Champions League. The Italian, who saw his team hit the woodwork five times during the opening half, said: "Chelsea have never won the Champions League. It is one of our aims next season. This team has the quality to win the Champions League."By winning the Double in his first season the former Milan head coach managed a feat Jose Mourinho was unable to achieve during his three years in west London. Asked if this made him "Special" Ancelotti smiled. "I am normal," he said. "But this was a fantastic victory. I was happy to work in a fantastic club with a fantastic atmosphere."We [will do] nothing special [in celebration]," he added. "I will follow my players and friends. Drink some wine and champagne. It is right to have a celebration, the team did a fantastic season."Despite being unfavoured, Portsmouth gave Chelsea an uncomfortable afternoon at times, and Ancelotti might have thought his luck had ceased after a series of squandered opportunities. He said: "Its strange to hit the post five times in one half. It never happened in my career that you hit five posts in one half. It was also strange to concede a penalty. That was a key moment," he said of Juliano Bellettis foul on Aruna Dindane. "If Portsmouth went 1-0 up it would have been more difficult for us. [But] I was not worried. The team had control and a lot of chances to score."Ancelotti had praise for Drogba, who has scored six goals in competitive Wembley appearances. The manager said: "He finished the season how he started. He has scored a lot of goals and played with continuity all the year."Chelseas Michael Ballack limped off before half-time and Ancelotti said: "We dont think it is a bad injury. He took a kick on his ankle. We hope he will make the World Cup."Avram Grant, his opposite number, said he was disappointed about the result, but proud of his teams effort in what has been a trying year. He said: "This was a very difficult season. One I will not forget."John TerryChelseaPortsmouthFA CupJamie Jackson guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
