Didier Drogba warns Chelsea about Liverpool mini-revival
Chelsea striker says trip to Anfield will be a difficult one Were seeing a different Liverpool than earlier this seasonDidier Drogba is determined to end Liverpools mini-revival after grabbing his first European goal of the season for Chelsea in their 4-1 Champions League success against Spartak Moscow.Chelseas victory last night ensured that they qualified for the knockout stages of the competition, with two goals from Branislav Ivanovic and another from Nicolas Anelka complementing Drogbas penalty. But Chelsea now face a difficult away trip to Liverpool on Sunday and Drogba, who captained the side against Spartak in the absence of the rested John Terry and the injured Frank Lampard, wants the champions to maintain their healthy five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.Liverpools poor start to the season under Roy Hodgson has improved in recent weeks with successive victories against Blackburn and Bolton."There is never a good time to go to Anfield because they are a very strong team," said Drogba. "They will try to use this game to start their season, so we have to be ready."We are seeing a different Liverpool than the one from earlier in the season. They have won their last two matches and their confidence is getting higher."We have to be careful. Its true that we shouldnt fear any team but were going to have some difficult moments. Since Ive been here, Chelsea v Liverpool has been special and its always a difficult game."The most difficult opponent is ourselves. We know if we lose points like we did last year we can be in trouble again. Its down to us to keep winning and to keep the gap."Its not easy. There are only a few teams who have done it before. When we lost against Manchester City, the reaction was good and thats what we have to try to achieve."But Drogba is certainly not getting carried away by Chelseas position at the summit of both the English top flight and Group F of the Champions League. He missed the opening two games of the European campaign through suspension and then a virus prevented him from playing in the first match against Spartak in Moscow.A point against MSK Zilina at Stamford Bridge in a fortnight will ensure the Blues finish top of the group, but Drogba remains cautious over Chelseas chances of winning the trophy at Wembley in May."Last year we were in the same position," added Drogba. "We qualified with two games to go and then we were out in the last 16. I cant say Im happy to have missed the first few games because Id have preferred to help my team achieve victories."But I hope the break is going to help me in future games. Its not easy because as a player you want to keep playing so you can find your best physical condition and understanding with your team-mates."I missed that a little bit before and thats why sometimes it was difficult for me at the start of league games but hopefully now I am going to be able to play regularly."Didier DrogbaChelseaLiverpool guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Tiger Woods: The revival has to share top billing with TW2: Tom Watson
The American media reaction to day one of Tiger Woodss comeback at the Masters was often fawning but he did not have the stage all to himselfThe first reviews are in and the cast and crew, not to mention the star, of "Tiger Woods: The revival" will be pleased, if a little miffed that they had to share the spotlight on their opening day at the golfing Broadway known as Augusta National."Surprise, surprise, surprise" was the New York Times succinct summation of a day in which Woods surprised many, and possibly even himself, by shooting 68, but Fred Couples and Tom Watson surprised even more by finished round one of the Masters at the top of the leaderboard.Meanwhile, the Augusta Chronicle was more inclined to downplay Woodss effort in favour of Watsons. "The press building was full of journalists from around the world prepared to write a story about TW from Stanford [University]. Just not this TW," declared Scott Michaux, the papers venerable golf correspondent. Watsons picture dominated the Chronicles front page, with Woodss pushed off to the side.Golf Digest, the so-called "bible" of the game, described the world No 1s effort as "new and improved - a step forward and, in some ways, a look back".The magazines Ron Sirak wrote: "What those who watched saw was a reminder of the special skills that made Woods one of the most-recognised athletes in the world. He toured Augusta National in 68 strokes, two off the lead by Fred Couples. For someone who had never broken 70 in the first round of the Masters, it was a clear reminder that, no matter what has happened, Woods still has to be considered the best player in the world until there is evidence otherwise. For the first time in 16 Masters he made two eagles in the same round."Jeff Rude at Golfweek magazine had his Hughie Green clap-o-meter out on the course (I hope the security guards didnt notice) and estimated that response to Woods play from the galleries was "90% to 95%" of what it was in the past. "His walks off the 1st tee and to the 9th green were met by roars of yesteryear, as if he had just gotten out of church rather than out of sex scandal. Some other audible response was tepid, Rude suggested. But if there was ambivalence to be found in some places, there was none to be found on American television, which has a long and dishonourable history of throwing itself at the feet of anyone who helps them get ratings. Woods certainly does that, and yesterday he found his reward."He got more close-ups and replays than anyone else, even those leading him," the New York Times pointed out. "Even his neck was admired by a CBS announcer."Tiger WoodsThe MastersGolfLawrence Donegan guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Cantona joins NY Cosmos as director
Former Manchester United player takes role with revived club Its kind of a mix between football and artThe former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona has joined the New York Cosmos as their new director of soccer. The 44-year-old, who retired as a professional player nearly 14 years ago, was voted Uniteds player of the century after sparking a trophy-winning revival at Old Trafford."I am very honoured to join the legendary New York Cosmos," Cantona said."Its a big project, a wonderful project. The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. Its kind of a mix between football and art."The newly-revived side, who ceased operations in the mid-1980s, have the eventual goal of returning to Major League Soccer. guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Serita Shone set to have further surgery Sergio Garcias revival continues in Andalucia Masters BOBSLEIGHThe British bobsleigh brakewoman Serita Shone is set to have further surgery in the next two days as she continues her recovery from a spinal fracture. The 22-year-old and her teama€‘mate Fiona Harrison were involved in a crash during training in Winterburg, Germany, on Thursday before the British Championships. While Harrison suffered head injuries, Shone was described as being in a critical condition after being airlifted to hospital and she had surgery to stabilise her spine. A statement from British Bobsleigh on Saturday said: "Serita Shone remains in ICU [intensive care unit] in a German hospital and her condition remains stable. She is communicating to family and friends, and has been allowed visitors. It is expected she will undergo further surgery in the next 48 hours. Fiona Harrison continues her recovery and will be returning to the UK shortly." PAGOLF Sergio Garcias revival continued when he took over the lead in the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama. Six days after his first victory for almost three years, with an amazing 11-stroke margin on his home course in Castellon, the 31-year-old Spaniard moved from three behind to two ahead with a four-under-par 67.Needing to win again to qualify for this coming weeks HSBC world championship in China, Garcia is on the six-under-par mark of 207 with a round to go.Compatriot Miguel Angel Jimenez (68) and Swede Christian Nilsson, who had a joint best-of-the-week 65, are tied for second at four under. The overnight leader, Richie Ramsay, is three back after closing with two bogeys for a 73. The defending champion, Graeme McDowell, went round in 81. PA CRICKETSaeed Ajmal took five wickets as another disappointing batting performance resulted in Sri Lanka slipping to a nine-wicket defeat against Pakistan in the second Test in Dubai. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 257 in nearly 110 overs, with Ajmal claiming five for 68.That left Pakistan needing 94 runs for victory and they put their foot down to win with a day to spare thanks to a speedy unbeaten 59 from Mohammad Hafeez. PA TENNISThe British No3, Anne Keothavong, continued her fine run of form when she claimed the Aegon GB Pro-Series title in Barnstaple with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Polands Marta Domachowska. It was her first singles title since 2008.Meanwhile, the British No1, Elena Baltacha, secured her place in Sundays final of the ITF event in Poitiers with a straight-sets win over Irena Pavlovic, coming through a first-set tie-break to win 7-6 , 6-1. Wigans Stuart Fielden relishing return to old home Bradford
Warriors prop who was back to his best last season returns to Odsal with fond memories Stuart Fielden will make a delayed entry to his 14th season at the Super League coalface , and the Wigan props first appearance of the year will provide one small boost to Bradfords enterprising bid to bring the good times back to Odsal. After years of decline on and off the field the Bulls, who were the trailblazers for the first few seasons after rugby leagues switch to summer in 1996, have relaunched energetically over the winter, and season-ticket sales have almost doubled to 11,000. Nearly five years since he followed Brian Noble across the Pennines to Wigan for a world-record transfer fee of 450,000, Fielden sounds genuinely enthused by the prospect of a Bradford revival. But his contribution to Sundays attendance will be wearing a Wigan kit."My little lad, Robbie, who was born just after the Grand Final last October, will be coming to his first game," says the 31-year-old, whose efforts in Wigans first Super League title since 1998 was recognised when he was recalled to the national team after a four-year absence. "Im chuffed the way its worked out that it will be at Bradford, because its a place with a lot of great memories for me and my family."Its great to see them getting back to how things used to be off the field, because its been sad to see whats happened over the last few years. They were great days at Odsal going back to before I got into the first team in 96 and 97, and I remember when we played Leeds in 99 and they had a record crowd of 24,000 - the place was packed to the rafters. Itll be good to have that sort of atmosphere back this weekend."With Wigan preparing for the World Club Challenge against St George Illawarra Dragons on 27 February, Fieldens memories have been drifting back to probably his greatest night in a Bradford shirt - an irresistible rampage through the Wests Tigers forwards when the Bulls were crowned world champions in 2006, the last hurrah of their golden era under Noble."That seems forever ago now, mainly because you measure time by whats happened since," says Fielden, who endured some dark days over the subsequent 12 months as he lost his mother, and whose recent revival at Wigan has therefore been one of the games more heartwarming stories. "Its a night Ill never forget, and Id be lying if I said I hadnt had this World Club Challenge on my mind. St George are a great name in rugby league and theyll be playing in their red V. Its going to be a special night. But Ive got to get picked yet."Im starting the season a week late because my knee wasnt quite right to play in Cardiff last weekend, and the way things are at Wigan, if you dont perform, youll be out."The return to Odsal will be a significant one for Fielden, on all sorts of levels.Wigan WarriorsBradford BullsSuper LeagueRugby leagueAndy Wilson guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Manchester Citys Carlos Tevez expected to return in next few days
City camp exploring January transfer opportunities Striker missed scheduled meeting with club on MondayCarlos Tevez is expected to fly back to England from Argentina "in the next few days" according to a source close to the forward. He is not expected to offer an apology to Roberto Mancini, the manager, or the club for flying to Buenos Aires without permission a fortnight ago, or for subsequently not returning to attend a scheduled meeting last Monday.Tevez may now leave City in January but there is concern in his camp that he may find it difficult to find another English club. "There may be a view that he is a bad card but this is just not true," the source said.A move to the continent is a possibility with Milan and Inter weighing up a deal and there is also the possibility of the revival of a transfer to Corinthians that fell through in the summer.Carlos TevezManchester CityJamie Jackson guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
