Nemanja Vidic urges Manchester United to learn from Fulham draw
Vidic says United should defend better at set-pieces Hangeland equaliser frustrates United defenderNemanja Vidic has urged his Manchester United team-mates to learn lessons from their 2-2 draw at Fulham yesterday. The Serbian defender said Brede Hangelands last-minute equaliser and the concession of two Premier League points was a cruel blow."Its a bad result, especially when we had a good result in the last minutes of the game," Vidic told MUTV. "A draw is difficult to take and we feel real disappointment about what happened in the end, but I hope we take some points from the goal we lost, and it doesnt happen again."Its hard to take. I think we would have been happy with the result - if not the performance - if we had won, but there are definitely some points to take from the game. The goal we lost at the end was a shame and we probably need to improve at set-pieces."Manchester UnitedPremier LeagueJames Callow guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Amir Khan seeks Lamont Peterson rematch but also appeals result
Amir Khan trying to get the result overturned Possible rematch would be somewhere neutralAmir Khan is confident of agreeing a rematch with Lamont Peterson. Khan suffered a controversial defeat by the American in Washington DC on Saturday, losing his WBA super-lightweight and IBF light-welterweight titles. Khan has lodged an official complaint over the refereeing of the fight, in which he was deducted two points in a split-decision defeat."We are trying to get the result overturned; if not, then a rematch is going to happen," Khan said in an interview at a gym in his home town of Bolton. "Even if the result does get turned over, I would still give Lamont Peterson a deserved re-match. Well do it somewhere neutral, not in DC or in the UK. Somewhere like Vegas ... where it will be neutral judging and a neutral referee."On Sunday Khan was confident enough of a rematch to dismiss suggestions of an appeal as irrelevant. Today he is not so sure, perhaps because in the past couple of days the unbeaten American Tim Bradley has said he will give Peterson a rematch. Bradley beat Peterson in a title fight two years ago and subsequently declined to fight Khan. The referee, Joseph Cooper, penalised Khan one point in the seventh round for pushing and one in the 12th when he hit Peterson on the break. The fight took place in the American boxers home town. The deductions proved crucial when the scores were announced, one judge giving the fight 114-111 to Khan but the other two scoring it 113-112 for Peterson.Khan said he would never fight in Washington DC again."I dont think there will be other big fights there, definitely not, after seeing what happened to me," he said. "People are going to think why should we go there because of the decision, and the refereeing and judging is not according to our profession."Amir KhanBoxing guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Fraser returns positive result
Sprinter withdraws from Diamond League meeting in Lausanne Track club president: toothache behind minor doping violationThe Jamaican Olympic and world 100 metres champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser, has tested positive, said Bruce James, the president of her track club, MVP.Fraser, 23, was due to run at a Diamond League meeting in Lausanne last night but withdrew before the start. James said Fraser had tested positive at a Diamond League meet in Shanghai on 23 May after taking medication to treat "toothache"."It is a minor doping violation," he said. "We have nothing to hide and as a result of this we have decided to go public and admit that she had a positive result."James outlined the sequence of events prior to the positive test. "She did a dental procedure in Jamaica in May. After doing it she travelled to Shanghai, China to compete in her first Diamond League meet."The travelling made the pain in her mouth much worse which prompted her to consult the meet doctors in Shanghai, who dispensed medication to her."The medication did not ease the pain and she sought out additional medication which reduced the pain enough to make her take to the track even though she felt quite nauseous and flat ... she ended up running 11.29 seconds, which was one of her worst times in years."AthleticsDrugs in sport guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Radioshack rider fails drugs test
Lis B-sample returns positive result for banned substance Chinese cyclist had been provisionally suspended in AprilChinas cycling authority has confirmed that one of Lance Armstrongs Radioshack team-mates has failed a doping test after his B-sample was returned positive, according to local media reports. Li Fuyu had been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance in April."Now there is no doubt of him being not positive for doping," Zhang Bin, the secretary-general of the Chinese Cycling Association, was quoted as saying on the China Dailys website. "No matter what his excuse was, and no matter how prominent he is in China cycling, the result has been confirmed and it is impossible to change."The 32-year-old rider was provisionally suspended by the International Cycling Union after Clenbuterol was found in his A-sample following an in-competition test during the Dwars Door Vlaanderen race in Belgium in March. The Chinese authorities have yet to hand down punishment but their decision will be passed to the UCI this month, the paper said. Li, who had denied the charges at a recent hearing, faces a two-year ban according to Chinas anti-doping policy.Chinas first professional cyclist, Li joined Radioshack in the close season. His team said in April that he would be removed if the test result was confirmed.Cycling guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

United must cut out sloppy mistakes
Defender concerned about falling behind Chelsea We need to improve at set-pieces, says VidicNemanja Vidic has warned his Manchester United team-mates they must learn quickly from the sloppiness that cost them victory at Fulham on Sunday if they are to keep up with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League.Sir Alex Fergusons side dropped their first points of the season at Craven Cottage after missing a late penalty and then conceding a stoppage time equaliser to Brede Hangeland. The manager admitted in the aftermath that his side had dropped "silly points" with Vidic, one of the visiting players outjumped by the Norwegian at the home sides second, just as frustrated by the wasteful stalemate."Everyone in the dressing-room was very disappointed," said the Serbian defender. "It was a bad result, especially as we were winning in the last minute of the game. Its hard to take the draw. We have to make sure that the goals we lost today dont happen again. All in all, its hard to take. If it had finished 2-1 we would have been happy with the result, but not that much with the performance. But if wed won we could have forgotten this game. Now there are definitely some lessons we must learn from this."We need to improve at set pieces. We knew it would be hard even before: we always find it difficult against Fulham. They have many strong players like Bobby Zamora, Hangeland and Dickson Etuhu. They are good in the air and we knew what we were going to face."Uniteds draw ensured only the defending champions, Chelsea, boast a perfect start to the new season having won both their games resoundingly. "Weve slipped behind early before, its happened in previous years," said Vidic."We drew against Newcastle two years ago and had some other bad results at the start of the season and still gone on [to challenge]. We dont want to be too down after the Fulham result, but its definitely hard to take because we had the result in our hands and, with the experience we have in our team, we shouldnt allow that to happen two minutes from the end."Manchester UnitedDominic Fifield guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Gary Speed believes that Wales can beat England at Wembley
Bellamy and Vaughan out, Collison in for Wales Youve got to believe you can get a result says managerGary Speed says Wales can beat England on Tuesday evening and register only their second win at Wembley, and their first in 34 years, having learned from their anaemic defeat to Fabio Capellos team in Cardiff in March. The Welsh will be hampered by the absence of the suspended Craig Bellamy and David Vaughan, but bolstered by their timely Group G win against second-placed Montenegro last Friday. "We wouldnt be here if we didnt think we could win," Speed said. "England are a fantastic team and will cause us problems, but were confident and we believe in the way we play. Theres certainly no fear. You never know, we might nick a result."Wales, ranked 117th in the world, had hoped to unsettle England in the intimidating atmosphere at the Millennium Stadium, only to concede twice in the opening 15 minutes and subside to a meek defeat. Speed was new to his role at that stage, with the loss inflicted in his first competitive match in charge, but lessons have been learned. Last weeks victory, while coming too late in the qualification programme to rekindle hope of progress to the finals, has at least offered signs of promise."That was our first game, really, and we were still putting things in place," said the Wales manager, who has West Hams Jack Collison available after a virus. "Perhaps we were playing too deep in that game and playing into Englands hands a little bit. But I was looking more long-term. But I was pleased with the way the players reacted in the second half, sticking to the game plan and not panicking. They still tried to keep playing and had a bit of success in that second half. Thats really helped in our development."But weve now looked at England to see where theyre strong and where theyre vulnerable, and well go there with a positive attitude. Youve got to believe you can get a result from the game. The result last Friday gave the players a bit of belief that were going in the right direction. Hopefully another good performance against England will keep things moving."WalesGary SpeedEuro 2012 qualifiersDominic Fifield guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
