Amir Khan seeks Lamont Peterson rematch but also appeals result
Amir Khan trying to get the result overturned Possible rematch would be somewhere neutralAmir Khan is confident of agreeing a rematch with Lamont Peterson. Khan suffered a controversial defeat by the American in Washington DC on Saturday, losing his WBA super-lightweight and IBF light-welterweight titles. Khan has lodged an official complaint over the refereeing of the fight, in which he was deducted two points in a split-decision defeat."We are trying to get the result overturned; if not, then a rematch is going to happen," Khan said in an interview at a gym in his home town of Bolton. "Even if the result does get turned over, I would still give Lamont Peterson a deserved re-match. Well do it somewhere neutral, not in DC or in the UK. Somewhere like Vegas ... where it will be neutral judging and a neutral referee."On Sunday Khan was confident enough of a rematch to dismiss suggestions of an appeal as irrelevant. Today he is not so sure, perhaps because in the past couple of days the unbeaten American Tim Bradley has said he will give Peterson a rematch. Bradley beat Peterson in a title fight two years ago and subsequently declined to fight Khan. The referee, Joseph Cooper, penalised Khan one point in the seventh round for pushing and one in the 12th when he hit Peterson on the break. The fight took place in the American boxers home town. The deductions proved crucial when the scores were announced, one judge giving the fight 114-111 to Khan but the other two scoring it 113-112 for Peterson.Khan said he would never fight in Washington DC again."I dont think there will be other big fights there, definitely not, after seeing what happened to me," he said. "People are going to think why should we go there because of the decision, and the refereeing and judging is not according to our profession."Amir KhanBoxing guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Khan fight mystery man is named
Promoters say Khan has been offered rematch Khans team may push for result to be changedAmir Khans promoters claim he has been offered a rematch with Lamont Peterson after they were told by the International Boxing Federation that the "mystery man" seen ringside at last months fight is one of their officials.Khan on Thursday used his Twitter account to post a series of images of the man, seen wearing a dark hat, and to draw attention to his movements around the judges table. Peterson won Khans IBF and World Boxing Association titles after a disputed points decision.Richard Schaefer, chief executive officer of Golden Boy Promotions, claims the man has now been identified as Mustafa Ameen, an IBF official who was given accreditation for the fight despite not being directly involved in it."His name is Mustafa Ameen and the IBF have confirmed to us his name, and they have confirmed to us that hes involved in an official capacity with the IBF," Schaefer told Sky Sports News."However, he was not in Washington in an official IBF capacity, but the IBF asked the Washington commission to issue him a credential so that he could attend the fight."Schaefer also claimed that the WBA have offered Khan a rematch with the American, and urged the IBF to follow suit."We have been informed today by the WBA that they will order an immediate rematch," he said. "We received a verbal confirmation today and we will get a written confirmation by next Tuesday."That means that no fighter can take an interim fight, that the next fight for Peterson would be a rematch."We hope that the IBF will follow because thats the least they can do. The ruling of the WBA to order an immediate rematch should put additional pressures on the IBF."He is also hopeful that the outcome of the fight will be changed to "no contest", allowing Khan to retain his belts, but said: "Its difficult to guess the no-contest ruling. I certainly hope this could happen."Amir KhanBoxing guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Frank Warren keen on rematch for George Groves and James DeGale
Warren ready to arrange fight on new boxing channel Both fighters must first come through their next boutsFrank Warren would like to see a rematch between George Groves and James DeGale as a flagship bout on a new boxing channel. The promoter Warren was flanked by his top fighters at Thursdays launch of BoxNation at the O2.The British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion Groves recently joined Warrens camp from the Hayemaker promotional stable, signing a three-year deal in the hope of securing a world title shot. Unbeaten in 13 fights with 10 stoppages, Groves is ranked in the top 15 with the WBC and IBF organisations and beat DeGale on points in May in a tight grudge match. The 23-year-old, who will still be trained by Adam Booth, is open to a possible rematch with the Olympic gold medallist.Warren would be keen to get that show on, provided both men come through their next bouts. Warren said: "What I have always done is put my fighters in with each other if they are at the same weight, because that is what the fans want."We dont keep them apart, we build fights. It is a natural rematch and is something which will happen, I am sure it will be some time next year and it will be a bigger fight. However, first of all George has got to get through Paul Smith, which will be a tough fight, and James has got to win the European title."On 15 October all eyes will be on the Liverpool Echo Arena for the WBO light heavyweight title bout between Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew on a card that will also feature DeGales European super-middleweight contest against Piotr Wilczeski before the action switches across the Atlantic for Bernard Hopkins versus Chad Dawson at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.James DeGaleBoxing guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
