The Question: Does it matter whom you play first? | Jonathan Wilson
When the fixtures come out, hope your club avoid a newly promoted side and look forward to a quick date with the top fourChelsea sit top of the table after five matches, and Sir Alex Ferguson dismisses it because theyve had an easy start (West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic, Stoke City, West Ham United, Blackpool). West Ham lie bottom, and Avram Grant explains it by their tough start (Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United, Chelsea, Stoke). Liverpool fans see their side fifth from bottom and hope its because theyve begun with Arsenal, Manchester City, West Brom, Birmingham and Manchester United. But given you have to play everybody twice, does it matter? Will the boost to morale Chelsea have presumably enjoyed in racking up a goal difference of 21-1 carry them inevitably to glory? Will West Ham, crushed by early failure, suffer the sort of psychological collapse that led to Derby County and Sunderland (twice) breaking records for sustained awfulness?Well, perhaps, perhaps not. A lead can be pressure in itself, and a string of tough games in a row, particularly if interspersed with hard Champions League games, could be debilitating. Once momentum goes, the decline can be rapid, as the examples of Newcastle in 1995-96, Manchester United in 1985-86 and Ipswich Town in 1980-81 show. Then again, the size of modern squads and the greater gulf between the quality of teams at the top and at the bottom probably insulates Chelsea for that sort of collapse. And while Derby had five points after 10 games in 2007-08 and went on to collect only six more, the previous season Sheffield United had had only six points but took a further 32 from the remaining 28 matches.Rollercoaster of promotionIs it, though, better to play certain sides at certain times of the season? Managers of teams in the Champions League always make a great fuss about whom and where they play after a European break, and thats something to which well hopefully return later in the season, but for now lets look at two theories about who its best to play near the beginning of the season. Is it a disadvantage to play promoted teams early? At first sight, it seems to make sense that it is best to avoid newly promoted teams near the start of the season. After all, theyll be high on the adrenaline of promotion, and the gloomy mundanity of repeated defeats wont have had time to take effect. Home crowds, delirious just to be in the Premier League, will be large and noisy, before settling to acceptance later in the season. newly promoted sides tend to lack depth, so the injuries and suspensions that inevitably occur will impact on them more than on larger squads; get them early, though, and that wont have had time to take effect. And then there are our memories of Hull Citys start in their first season up, when they won away at Arsenal, or of Burnley last season beating Manchester United at Turf Moor. After Tottenham Hotspur had drawn at West Brom (and Sunderland lost there) it was said that that was a tricky fixture to get early in the season, almost as though it were axiomatic that you dont want to get a newly promoted side away from home early on. It feels like it should be true.If points were distributed evenly over a season, after five home games you would expect a side to have picked up 26.32% of the total points it won at home over the course of the season. If they really do perform better early on, they should pick up a higher percentage of their points in the first five games; over the last 10 seasons, newly promoted teams have won 27.31% of their home points in those first five matches - higher than the expected figure, but not extraordinarily so. Burnley, notably, took 12 of the 26 home points they won last season in those first five games, but after five home games in 2004-05, Norwich had just three, and went on to pick up a further 26 in the 14 that remained. What if we take the home element out of the equation? Is it any harder to play newly promoted teams in the first 10 games of the season? Not really (and given Blackpool and West Brom were part of Chelseas supposedly easy start, that was already on some level acknowledged). Again, if points were distributed evenly youd expect a side to win 26.32% of its total points in the first 10 matches; newly promoted sides over the past 10 seasons have picked up 27.49%. Hull took 20 of 35 from its first 10 games in 2008-09, but Leicester City had only five of 33 in 2003-04.Rhythm of winningIs it better to play a Big Four side early on? Again, it seems to make sense that its better to play the best early on, before theyve hit their rhythm and while new signings are taking time to settle. It feels as though there ought to be a greater randomness early on, and that should be of advantage to weaker sides, equalising the contest. And, as Ferguson and Arsenals Arsene Wenger are forever telling us, its important for top sides to peak at the right time, not in August but in March.Again, its easy to remember examples of Big Four teams slipping up early on - not just Burnley beating Manchester United and Hull winning at Arsenal, but Chelsea losing at Wigan or United dropping points at home to Reading and Newcastle. And again, the statistics suggest the theory is a myth. The whole notion of a Big Four, of course, was called into doubt last season, and we may soon have an acknowledged Big Something-else, so here Ive looked at the four seasons between 2005-06 and 2008-09, when the same four teams - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United - did finish in the top four positions. From the first six games, if points were distributed evenly, youd expect teams to pick up 6/38 = 15.89% of the points they go on to win over the course of the season. Over that four-season spell, the Big Four picked up 15.31%. So again, the instinctive feeling is confirmed by the figures, but not by enough to make it significant. What does emerge from those figures, though, is that Manchester Uniteds performances in the opening half-dozen games of the season are weaker than might be expected. They may have collected 15 points from their first six games last year, but that is their best haul in the past decade, and in 2002-03 they collected only seven. Over the last 10 seasons, United have gathered only 13.8% of their total points in the first six games. So when the fixture list is released, while it may be a slight disadvantage to play a promoted team early, what a side should really be looking for is an early game against Manchester United.Premier LeagueJonathan Wilson guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Liverpools future is bright, insists Damien Comolli
Clubs newly-promoted director of football excited by future Still no clarification regarding Kenny Dalglishs role as managerLiverpools newly-promoted director of football, Damien Comolli, is confident there is now a structure in place to take the club forward. The Frenchman was initially appointed as director of football strategy by Liverpools owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), in November to provide support to the then manager Roy Hodgson.Hodgson, however, departed less than two months later after a string of poor results, but Fenway has seen enough in Comolli to give him more responsibility, confirming on Tuesday his promotion as well as the elevation of commercial director Ian Ayre to managing director."I know there is still a lot of work to do, were not where we want to be yet and itll probably take a few months to do that, but I am totally confident," Comolli said. "All the signs are very positive and I can see only green lights, no red lights."Weve had some ups and downs and hopefully there will be a lot of ups in the future. With the backing of the owners and the way they are committed, Im sure well have a bright future."He added: "It was a tough decision [to get rid of Hodgson] made by the club, but we have been looking forward since that and making other appointments with key individuals as we look to restructure the club. We are definitely looking forward to a bright future."Comollis role has been extended to oversee all football-related matters outside of first-team training and selection, which are under the remit of the caretaker manager Kenny Dalglish, who replaced Hodgson on 8 January."It covers pretty much all of the football side," added Comolli. "Its basically a day-to-day relationship with the manager and his coaching staff, its also medical and sports science, performance analysis, player liaison, team travel, scouting and negotiating transfer contracts. A big part of it is the academy."Comolli described his relationship with Dalglish as "very good" and said the 60-year-old has been "great" since returning to the club he graced as a player and as a manager before his resignation from Anfield in January 1991.The 38-year-old did not, however, comment on rumours that Dalgish has been offered a two-year contract to remain in his post beyond the end of this season.Liverpool guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Liverpool host Arsenal on opening day
The full Premier League fixture list 2010-11 Chelsea and Manchester United open against promoted sides Tottenham Hotspur face Manchester City at White Hart LaneChelsea begin the defence of their Premier League title with a home match against newly promoted West Bromwich Albion. The 14 August match means a return to Stamford Bridge for the former Blues midfielder Roberto Di Matteo, now manager of West Brom.Next up for the champions will be a trip to Wigan Athletic, where they were beaten last season, before Stoke City visit Stamford Bridge on 28 August. The title holders have to wait until 2 October for their first match against one of the big four clubs, when they face Arsenal at home, with the return fixture on Boxing Day.Carlo Ancelottis side first face Manchester United on 18 December, with the two playing at Old Trafford on 7 May - the Blues penultimate away fixture. United, runners-up in 2009-10, also start with a home match against a newly promoted team. Sir Alex Fergusons side take on Newcastle United on the first day. Blackpool, the third of the sides promoted from the Championship, provide the Old Trafford opposition on the last day of the season, 22 May.There are two intriguing matches between top-four hopefuls on the opening day. Liverpool start the post-Rafael Benitez era with a home match against Arsenal, while Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City meet at White Hart Lane.Aston Villa face West Ham United and Everton travel to Blackburn Rovers, while Blackpools first match in the Premier League is at home, to local rivals Wigan. Elsewhere on the opening day, Steve Bruces Sunderland are at home to Birmingham City, one of the clubs he previously managed. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Stoke City play at Molineux, while Bolton Wanderers and Europa League runners-up Fulham meet in the north-west.Newcastles manager, Chris Hughton, admitted he had been hoping for an easier start after seeing his side given a trip to Old Trafford on the opening day. "Its a tough start for us, we would have preferred a home game to kick the season off but you take what you get," he said."We can take heart and confidence from the 1-1 draw we earned at Old Trafford two years ago on the opening day of the 2008-09 season. Villa at home the following week is another tough one but a great game to begin our home campaign. You tend to look at the number of back-to-back games you have against the top six/eight teams and our fixture list looks to be fairly balanced in that respect."The Blackpool manager, Ian Holloway, welcomed the news his side will play their first game at home followed by a visit from Arsenal. "It is nice to kick off with a home game and with Wigan up the road it will be nice for us," he told Sky Sports News.On the trip to north London to face Arsene Wengers men, he added: "Thats fantastic, thats exactly what I wanted. It will be a new experience for all of us going to the Emirates. Hopefully all the butterflies will be out of the way and we can see what we can do against Arsenal."Blackpool also face a tricky finish when they meet Manchester United at Old Trafford on the final day. "That will be nice if we could celebrate staying up," said Holloway. "I am sure Sir Alex (Ferguson) has already sent me a letter telling me to bring some good red wine."Premier LeagueFootball fixtures 2010-11 guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

The Secret Footballer: For new boys theres nothing like the big time
The biggest strength of the newly promoted clubs could be the one thing that nobody else has: they have nothing to loseI always felt that Bob Dylan was on the money when he sang: "When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose," so much so that in the early part of my career I adopted it as my own motivational mantra. Since then things have changed, materialistically at least, and yet such is my affection for the sentiment behind that line that I constantly find myself applying it to new situations, like the fortunes of Norwich, QPR and Swansea this season. Its been a tough start for the three promoted clubs as a group. Between them theyve picked up one point, scored one goal and conceded nine. Yet these are early days and their biggest strength could turn out to be the one thing that nobody else in the Premier League has: they have nothing to lose.A number of their players will be appearing in the Premier League for the first time, which is a markedly different experience from playing there with the reputation of someone from whom great things are continually expected. To the players already plying their trade you are an unknown quantity and this, coupled with the team spirit that newly promoted teams almost always have, provides the Premier League newcomers with their most dangerous weapon.Everything has a wonderful novelty value, from the fabulous stadiums, like the Emirates, where the facilities are better than the five-star hotel you stayed in the night before, to the seemingly insignificant things that put a smile on your face, like the lion with the crown on its head on the sleeve of your shirt and the balls that move all over the place - nobody particularly likes them but theyre new, so who cares? There are some things that you simply cant help getting excited about, like being on Match of the Day every week, although I quickly came to realise that this also has its drawbacks when youre playing for a promoted club. Not long after the season started one of our players missed what at first glance looked like an easy chance but on closer inspection revealed the assistant referee had flagged for offside.MOTD, however, replayed the incident several times in its highlights with Alan Hansen pulling quotes out of the idiots guide to punditry like: "If you dont take those at this level, then youre gonee get punished." They portrayed it as a missed chance to provide their pundits with a stereotype to suit the game, namely: smaller, newly promoted team plays OK but squanders a great opportunity and learns a harsh lesson after conceding at the other end. That sort of patronising coverage is much easier than doing homework on unknown players.Financially the difference in the Premier League is huge. Promoted players will often get a 100% wage increase while around the club everything is done on and off the field to encourage you to retain top-flight status. Suddenly numbered car parking spaces appear at the training ground, flights are used for away games when a coach used to do the job perfectly fine and the staff numbers are swelled by the addition of the best chefs, player liaison officers to call if you need a restaurant booked or the media off your back and, bizarrely, at one of my clubs, a resident priest. I never did get round to asking who sent for him.One of the most important things, though, is to remember what got you in the Premier League in the first place. Ian Holloway, the Blackpool manager, was particularly shrewd in this respect last season. His players were eating their lunch from tin-foil packages delivered in the boot of a car to their training ground (otherwise known as a hut with smashed windows with some playing fields) and washing their own kit. Little wonder they kept their feet on the ground. The manager is so often the key to the hopes of a newly promoted team. He is riding high on the back of last seasons success along with his players and, if promotion has been on the cards for a while, he may already have targets earmarked to improve the squad. The trick is to strengthen without upsetting the harmony in the changing room, which isnt always easy if a new signing has joined on higher wages than those who slogged their guts out to win promotion.Victories in the Premier League come nothing like as easily as they did the year before but there is enormous satisfaction to be taken from getting results as the underdogs. Ive been in that position and at the end of games witnessed top professionals refusing to shake hands or swap shirts because they couldnt accept that they hadnt beaten this team of nobodies and one or two somebodies. And all that does is spur the smaller clubs on.I actually came to prepare for games with the mind-set that I had no respect for any player from the first whistle until the last, irrespective of their background. That is not to be confused with kicking people to bits; it is simply a way of thinking that allows me to play with no fear of reputations or bank balances. After a while you begin to notice a change: the handshakes come, they might even start calling you by your nickname. Other managers recognise your quality and you may be on your way up the ladder. We cant all be Lionel Messi but it is amazing how far determination to succeed can carry a player.Indeed, in the days when Id have to leave the pitch, after ruining a few betting coupons, with no shirt and no handshake, Id walk directly behind my opposite number towards the tunnel staring at the name on his back and think to myself: "Now you dont talk so loud, now you dont seem so proud, how does it feel?" There is a lot to be said for having nothing and sometimes I really miss the effects of it. Im sure Bob knows the feeling and, come the end of the season, perhaps Norwich, QPR and Swansea will too.Follow the Secret Footballer on Twitter: TSFGuardianPremier League 2011-12Premier LeagueThe Secret Footballer guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Pompey relegated as Baggies go up
Relegation confirmed following 1-0 win for Hammers West Bromwich Albion promoted from ChampionshipPortsmouths relegation from the Premier League has been confirmed after West Ham beat Sunderland 1-0 this afternoon.Although Portsmouth do not have a league fixture this weekend due to their FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow, the club can no longer catch 17th-placed Wigan even if they win all of their remaining games.Wigan, like West Ham, have 31 points, while Portsmouth have just 14 with five games left to play following their nine-point deduction for going into administration. Even without the deduction, Portsmouth would still be last in the table.West Brom, meanwhile, have been promoted from the Championship after winning 3-2 away to Doncaster.PortsmouthPremier LeaguePaolo Bandini guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Hull City confirm intention to terminate Jimmy Bullards contract
Hull confirm midfielder has been given notice Bullard has a right to appeal against the decisionHull City have confirmed they have moved to terminate the contract of their club record signing Jimmy Bullard.Bullard, 32, has not featured for the club this season after being suspended following an incident on a pre-season trip to Slovenia. He is under contract until the end of the 2012-13 season, on a 45,000-a-week salary.A club statement said: "The club has given notice to terminate the contract of Jimmy Bullard."Mr Bullard has a right of appeal and it would be inappropriate to make any further comment at this time that might prejudice this process. The club will continue to focus on the development and performance of the squad going forward and is concentrated on efforts to deliver a positive season on and off the pitch for the Tigers."Bullard, signed from Fulham for 5m in January 2009, attended a disciplinary hearing at the KC Stadium, where he was represented by the Professional Footballers Association. The former Peterborough and Wigan midfielder, who has started only 19 league games for Hull, has been linked with a move to newly promoted QPR.Hull City guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Ancelotti decides to stay in England
Former Chelsea manager says he wants to remain here Ancelotti happy to have a break from coachingThe former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, sacked last weekend at the conclusion of his second season in charge at Stamford Bridge, says he would like to find another coaching job in England.Ancelotti has been linked with the coaching position at newly promoted Queens Park Rangers, while he has also been a reported target of the Italian club Roma. When asked about the Serie A side, the former Milan manager told Italys Sky Sports 24: "I have not had contact with the club, I still have to resolve my contract with Chelsea."My intention is to remain in England. I have spent two beautiful years here, I have felt really well and I want to remain here. I am in no hurry to find an immediate solution."Since 1995 up to now, Ive only had a minor break, because Ive always coached, and hence, this would be an opportunity to update myself, see new things, and face new challenges with a different experience. For example, I will soon go to St Petersburg to see [his compatriot and Zenit coach, Luciano] Spalletti."Ancelotti led Chelsea to the double in his first season at Stamford Bridge, but was dismissed after they could only finish second his second term, while losing to Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-finals. He won the competition twice with Milan.Carlo AncelottiChelseaRoma guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Stevenage 1-2 Portsmouth
Stevenage 1-2 PortsmouthPortsmouth avoided being the victims of a Carling Cup upset as they recorded a victory over the newly promoted League Two side Stevenage at the Lamex Stadium.Competing in the first round of the League Cup since 2002, relegated Portsmouth got off to a good start with an eighth-minute goal from the 18-year-old Nadir Ciftci. The Carling Cup was new territory for Stevenage altogether following their elevation from the Conference last season. And it began badly as Ciftci got on the end of a Matt Ritchie cross to direct a neat header home from just inside the six-yard box.Pompeys lead, however, lasted just 10 minutes as Darren Murphy fired a 35-yard drive into the bottom corner. But in an action-packed first half, it was Steve Cotterills side who regained the lead in the 36th minute before the break when Joel Ward crossed for Michael Brown to head home from just inside the Stevenage penalty area. The second period was an often tense and tight affair and the gulf in status between both sides was not very evident. But following a losing start to their Championship campaign at the weekend, Cotterill will be happy that his side got a positive result in one of the trickiest ties of the whole first round.Carling CupStevenagePortsmouth guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
