Chivas Guadalajara 3-2 Manchester United | Pre-season match report
Chivas Guadalajara 3-2 Manchester UnitedJavier Hernandez scored against his new team as Manchester United were beaten by Chivas Guadalajara on the final game of their North American tour. Hernandez played the first half for his old club and the second for his new side, and made an immediate impact as he netted after just eight minutes, to the delight of the crowd at the new Estadio Omnilife.Chris Smalling, Uniteds other summer signing so far, levelled two minutes later but Adolfo Bautista restored the hosts lead after 38 minutes and Hector Reynoso made it 3-1 just before the hour mark, before Nani pulled one back in the 79th minute.Hernandez, who has been given a heros reception on his return to Mexico, was the centre of attention from the start and was given a standing ovation when his name was read out.Fittingly he rewarded the fans who had come to cheer him by becoming the first player to score at Chivas new stadium, hitting a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from Bautistas chest-down. Just two minutes later however, Smalling rose at a corner to head the ball home and draw United level with his first goal for the club.Fabio had an effort well saved by Luis Michel after 23 minutes, but on the whole it was the Mexicans who were playing the better football, and they went ahead again when, from Alberto Medinas centre, Reynoso set up Bautista to finish confidently.Hernandez swapped teams at half-time, replacing Dimitar Berbatov in the United attack, but he could do nothing to improve their fortunes as Reynoso headed home from Michel Vazquezs corner. Nani did pull one back with 11 minutes remaining after good work from Tom Cleverley, but it was too little, too late for UnitedManchester UnitedChivas del Guadalajara guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Gervinho has an instant impact for Arsenal with brace in Cologne win
Ivory Coast international scores twice in first 15 minutes Forward replaced early on after minor injury scareGervinho scored twice in his first 15 minutes as an Arsenal player as the Gunners beat Cologne 2-1 in a pre-season friendly in Germany on Saturday. The Ivory Coast international, signed from the French champions Lille by Arsene Wenger earlier this month, made an impressive start by opening the scoring just seven minutes into the game with the Bundesliga side when he finished well after being sent clear on goal by a pass from Jack Wilshere.Eight minutes later Gervinho made it 2-0, this time benefitting from good work on the right flank by Theo Walcott. But Arsenals new arrival did not get the chance to add to his double strike, as he was substituted just before the half-hour mark with what seemed to be a minor knock after colliding with the Cologne substitute goalkeeper, Miro Varvodic.Arsenals other new signing, Carl Jenkinson, had a far less memorable night when the teenage defender scored a spectacular own goal just before half-time, but the Gunners held on fairly comfortably in the second half and their evening was only soured by a serious-looking knee injury suffered by the 19-year-old midfielder Conor Henderson.ArsenalKoln guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

England U19 1-3 Spain U19
Spain 3-1 EnglandEngland were eliminated from the European Under-19 Championships at the semi-final stage as they were outclassed by Spain in Saint-Lo. The team of youngsters, coached by Noel Blake, failed to emulate their achievement of 12 months ago when they reached the final but they could have no complaints about the outcome.Spain knocked the ball around in confident style and went ahead after 12 minutes through Liverpools Daniel Pacheco who converted a ball cut back across the area by Sergio Canales, who was impressive throughout the match.Four minutes later England were forced to make a substitution when Aston Villas Nathan Baker suffered a hamstring injury and was replaced by Tottenhams Tom Bostock.Spain continued to dominate, keeping possession confidently in the manner of the World Cup-winning senior side, and on 34 minutes their captain, Keko, exchanged passes with Pacheco before beating the goalkeeper Declan Rudd with a left-footed shot after a weaving run into the box.Eight minutes before the interval Bostock scored Englands only goal with a low 20-yard volley after the Spanish defence could only partially clear a cross from the right that was flicked into the box.Rodrigo should have restored Spains two-goal advantage after 53 minutes but shot wide from close range after latching on to Martin Montoyas low cross. But it came as no surprise when Spain made it 3-1 three minutes later following an intelligent free-kick by Thiago Alcantara, lifted over the wall after a dummied flick to his right, for Canales to run on to and place calmly past Rudd.Ryan Donaldson shot over from close range in a rare England attack shortly afterwards but Spain were soon back on the offensive and Rudd beat out a fierce drive from the classy Keko while Pacheco shot over when well placed.EnglandSpain guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Damien Lagrange gave the hosts a lifeline with a try that was converted by Valentin Courrent before Burrell secured the bonus-point try.Agens Pat OConnor touched down on 52 minutes with Courrent adding further points but it was not enough as Sale held on.NewcastleToulonSaleRugby union guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Everton 5-3 Blackpool
What a game. Reward for the thousands who braved the unceasing rain and reward for Evertons refusal to become another name in the tale of Blackpools travels this season. David Moyess side matched and bettered the barnstorming approach weve come to expect from Ian Holloways team. The visiting side struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, and Everton took advantage after 20 minutes, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov working his way to the byline and inside Neal Eardley before sliding the ball across the penalty area for Louis Saha to turn into the net.It took a set piece, but Blackpool replied in the 37th minute, when Ian Evatt turned Charlie Adams low corner goalwards at the near post. Leighton Baines attempted to clear it, seemingly after the ball had crossed the line, but Alex Baptiste was on hand to make sure.Everton were denied the lead two minutes later when the referee pulled play back for a foul on Seamus Coleman after he had regained his feet and fed Saha, who turned the ball in off the far post. The crowd jeered but it took only two minutes of the second half for Saha to repeat the feat, steering a low Baines cross in at the near post.Things looked to have swung Blackpools way just after the hour mark when James Beattie slotted the ball across the face of the goal to Jason Puncheon, who avoided the bodies on the line to level the scores. They took the lead on 64 minutes, when Adams leaping header finished a rampaging counterattack. It looked as though it was going to be another one of those days for Everton when Evatt hooked Jack Rodwells chip off the line a few minutes later, but Saha secured the match ball and restored parity in the 76th minute, heading home unmarked after the substitute Jermaine Beckfords header had bounced up off the ground. Beckford added the fourth three minutes after that, getting a foot to a Baines ball to leave goalkeeper Paul Rachubka shaking his head.Saha capped off a sensational second half with six minutes left, breaking down the left and fending off the attentions of Adam to prod the ball beyond the keeper.EvertonBlackpoolPremier LeagueGeorgina Turner guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Holland 5-3 Hungary | Euro 2012 qualifier match report
A late double from Dirk Kuyt spared Dutch blushes as they escaped from a night of defensive havoc with a 5-3 victory over Hungary to stay on course for next years Euro 2012 finals. The Liverpool striker struck after 78 and 81 minutes to give the Dutch a 14th consecutive victory in qualifying matches after Hungary had hit back to threaten an upset in a thrilling Group E match. They lead the group with a maximum 18 points, although the sight of Robin van Persie going off with a knee injury was a worry for the Dutch and his club Arsenal.Van Persie opened the scoring after 13 minutes when two Hungarian defenders failed to clear a corner kick and the striker netted at the near post. However, he was forced off a minute before half-time when he was injured by a late tackle by Vilmos Vanczak.Hungary took advantage of a sloppy start to the second half by the hosts to turn the match on its head. First, Gergely Rudolf dribbled into the area and his shot deflected into the net off Rafael van der Vaart and four minutes later a fine cross from Balazs Dzsudzsak was volleyed home by Zoltan Gera. The playmaker Wesley Sneijder equalised on the hour after a lucky one-two with Vanczak and 12 minutes later Ruud van Nistelrooy put the Dutch ahead with a deflected shot after a superb solo run by Ibrahim Afellay.Gera equalised with 15 minutes remaining after more Dutch uncertainty at the back, but Kuyt volleyed his side back ahead from an Afellay cross and sealed the points with a flukey lob over the stranded Hungary goalkeeper Marton Fulop.Euro 2012HollandHungary guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Germany 1-2 Australia | International friendly match report
Australia stunned Germany with two goals in three minutes to snatch a 2-1 away win in the friendly in Monchengladbach and exact revenge for their World Cup group stage defeat last year.David Carney slotted in after an hour and Luke Wilkshire converted a penalty to cancel out Mario Gomezs firsta€‘half goal and hand them their first win over the Germans in four matches. The hosts, who beat Australia 4-0 in South Africa, were missing five starters and the Germany coach, Joachim Low, made eight changes to the team who beat Kazakhstan on Saturday to top their Euro 2012 qualifying group, bringing in several young players. It took a while before his team settled and Lukas Podolski had their first good chance when he curled his freea€‘kick just wide of Mark Schwarzers goal on 23 minutes. Two minutes later Gomez was on target, firing in from the edge of the box to beat the Fulham goalkeeper and underline his ambitions for a starting spot after replacing Miroslav Klose for the game. With the captain, Michael Ballack, watching from the stands with his international future to be decided next month, the Germans imploded in the second half allowing Carney to race clear and slot in the equaliser through the legs of the goalkeeper Tim Wiese.Wilkshire made it 2-1 with a spota€‘kick three minutes later after Harry Kewell was brought down in the box to give Australias German coach, Holger Osieck, a memorable win.FriendliesGermanyAustralia guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Aston Villa 2-2 Man United
It is true what they say, and they said it here first, but you never win anything with kids. An Aston Villa side barely old enough to shave held a two-goal lead against Manchester United with less than 10 minutes to go, yet were undone by a double substitution and the team that never gives up.United were able to put a strongish side out, despite all their injuries and suspensions, while Gerard Houllier had to raid his academy for practically the whole of the Villa midfield. It was men against boys, but the kids did all right. It was United who looked callow and insipid for most of the game, failing to impose themselves on a Villa side there for the taking, before raising themselves once defeat was staring them in the face. The home side themselves were fairly anonymous and unadventurous in a dull first half, yet seemed to realise during the interval that United had nothing more to offer and went for the win thereafter. Marc Albrighton missed a sitter at the start of the second half, James Collins headed against the bar and Gabriel Agbonlahor struck a post before the Villa breakthrough came with a penalty, so United can hardly say they deserved much better. For all the energy and invention of Albrighton and Barry Bannan in the first half, Villa conspicuously lacked punch up front, yet the second half was a different story, with Stewart Downing, Ashley Young and Agbonlahor all stepping up and assuming responsibility. It was a Wes Brown foul to prevent Young reaching Agbonlahors pass that earned Villa their penalty and the opening goal, then four minutes later Young and Downing combined on the left for the latters cross to leave Albrighton with a tap-in.That seemed to be that, except it rarely is with United. Sir Alex Ferguson withdrew both his ineffective strikers and sent on Federico Macheda and Gabriel Obertan in their place. Within a couple of minutes the former latched on to Darren Fletchers back-heel to give United hope, then five minutes from the end, after Richard Dunne failed to cut out Nanis cross, Nemanja Vidic stooped low to earn an unlikely draw. That meant, with five minutes of added time, that United still had 10 minutes to win the game, but Villa just held out. Their kids looked visibly older by the time the final whistle blew.Premier LeagueAston VillaManchester UnitedPaul Wilson guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Saracens end Heineken Cup campaign with defeat by Clermont Auvergne
Saracens 14-24 Clermont AuvergneClermont Auvergne kept their Heineken Cup quarter-final hopes alive as they collected a bonus point with a last-gasp try in an exciting match at Vicarage Road. The French Top 14 team needed a five-point haul to give them any hope of qualifying from Pool Two, although any kind of win would guarantee them an Amlin Challenge Cup last-eight spot. For Saracens this was a dead rubber. The French side swept ahead in the third minute when Kevin Senio and Tasesa Lavea combined to rip open the home defence and send the centre Wesley Fofana darting to the posts. Anthony Floch kicked the conversion. It took Saracens nearly 20 minutes to make an impact, but a sustained attack of seven phases was ultimately halted by an offside offence and Owen Farrell kicked the resultant penalty. That score lifted the crowd and Clermont found themselves on the back foot. Their defence was uncompromising but the Irish referee, Alan Lewis, penalised a blatant side-entry to a ruck by Julien Bardy after 28 minutes. Farrell kicked the penalty from 40 metres.Within four minutes Saracens had the lead. The hooker Schalk Brits did the damage with a strong break before timing a fine pass to the England wing David Strettle, who carved through the remaining cover. Farrells conversion attempt hit a post.Clermont replied within minutes. Kini Murimurivalu broke through midfield and passed to Floch; the full-back was brought down by Chris Wyles but he managed to get away a pass for the hooker Willie Wepener to score. Flochs conversion went wide. The second half began with Saracens taking the game to Clermont. They had an opportunity to regain the lead after 49 minutes, but Farrells penalty attempt from out on the left missed the target. Another Farrell effort after 52 minutes was even further off target. After 54 minutes he kicked a penalty from 35 metres out.Clermont regained control after 64 minutes when a succession of drives on the Saracens line ended with the fly-half Lavea crashing between the posts for a try which he converted. Saracens surged back but Clermont stood firm, despite breaks by Noah Cato and Kelly Brown. The visitors sealed a bonus point as Tii Paulo was driven over.SaracensClermont AuvergneHeineken CupRugby union guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

South Africa win to extend unbeaten run
South Africa 5-0 GuatemalaSouth Africas solid build-up to the World Cup continued with a 5-0 victory over Guatemala in Polokwane. Two penalties from Katlego Mphela, added to goals from Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Surprise Moriri and Bernard Parker, saw Bafana Bafana extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches under the coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira. The match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium was also an historic one for the captain, Aaron Mokoena, as he marked the occasion by winning his 100th international cap, the first South African to reach the landmark.South Africa started brightly in front of a packed 45,000 crowd, taking the lead after 12 minutes when Ibraham Chaivu awarded a controversial penalty against Gustavo Cabrera. The defender appeared to handle the ball outside the box but that did not matter to Mphela, who stepped up to score his 12th international goal. The lead was doubled after 26 minutes when Thwala made a determined run into the box and cut the ball back for Letsholonyane to score. After the break Moriri turned the ball in from close range after Mphelas 48th-minute cross, before Mphela grabbed his second on 56 minutes when Cabrera handled again.Steven Pienaar then hit the upright with a teasing 20-yard free-kick but the last say of the game belonged to Parker, who struck a fierce left-footed shot from the edge of the box beyond the helpless David Guerra after 82 minutes for South Africas fifth.World Cup 2010South Africa guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Southampton 2-1 Hull City | Championship match report
The Southampton manager, Nigel Adkins, hailed his sides spirit after they came from behind to beat Hull 2-1 and extend their winning home run in the league to 19 matches. The Hull midfielder Robert Koren had put the visitors ahead, but goals from Guly Do Prado and Adam Lallana kept Saints two points clear of second-placed West Ham at the top of the Championship.Adkins was delighted after his side recorded their 21st straight home win in all competitions."We have a great team spirit," said Adkins. "We created a lot of chances in the first half, but just could not score. Its a great win for us. It was a tough game, but Im pleased to come back with a win after the loss at the weekend."Southampton ensured they would keep their cushion at the top of the table after two goals in seven second-half minutes.Saints started well and went close early on when Morgan Schneiderlins fizzing shot from 12 yards was palmed down by Peter Gulacsi, who had to dive on the ball which was trickling in.The full-back Dan Harding and Lallana went close with long-range efforts which went over and the goalkeeper Kelvin Davis was booked for scything down Tom Cairney. The Tigers took the lead in the 43rd minute when Cairneys header was well saved by Davis, but Koren nodded in the rebound from six yards. The home side equalised three minutes after the break when Do Prado slammed in from close range after his initial shot was saved.Saints equalised seven minutes later when Frazer Richardson swung in a cross and Lallana guided in a header from five yards.Hulls evening got worse when the substitute Robbie Brady, who had only been on for 12 minutes, was sent off for a rash challenge on Harding.Hulls caretaker-manager, Nick Barmby, felt his team had made avoidable errors. Barmby said: "Its frustrating. We have to eradicate the silly mistakes. Were nearly there and we will get there."We need to work on some areas and have to iron out the mistakes. For 80 minutes I thought we played well but we were undone by 10 minutes of lack of concentration."Championship 2011-12SouthamptonHull CityChampionship guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Dimitar Berbatov still has my trust, insists Sir Alex Ferguson
Berbatov was left on bench until last 10 minutes against Bayern Ferguson says he has no reason to doubt strikers talentsSir Alex Ferguson has insisted he still trusts Dimitar Berbatov, despite having left the 30.75m striker on the bench until the final 10 minutes of Wednesdays Champions League game against Bayern Munich.Wayne Rooney started up front against Bayern despite carrying an ankle injury, and when the time came to replace him after 55 minutes, Ferguson sent on the defender John OShea. Berbatov was only introduced after Arjen Robben had scored to give Bayern an away-goals lead.Fergusons actions raised questions about Berbatovs future at the club, but the manager insisted today he has no concerns about the overall contribution of the Bulgarian striker, who is set to be included for Sundays trip to Blackburn after Rooney aggravated his ankle injury against Bayern."Yes, I still trust him," said Ferguson of Berbatov. "He is a good player and there is absolutely no reason why we should doubt that. Dimitar he has done well in a lot of games recently but we prefer to play with one striker. When we got the man sent off on Wednesday there was no need to bring a striker on because all we were trying to do was go over the line in terms of defending."Manchester UnitedPremier League guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Italy v Serbia called off after trouble
Serbia fans threw flares onto pitch and at home support Stojkovic withdrew from game after being attacked by fansItalys Euro 2012 qualifier against Serbia in Genoa has been suspended after just seven minutes and looks set to be cancelled after the away support threw flares on to the pitch and into the home supporters section.Serbian supporters had fought with police outside the stadium and reportedly even attacked their own teams bus, causing the goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic to withdraw from the game before kick-off.Inside the stadium, kick-off had to be delayed by 45 minutes after a group of Serbian fans began throwing objects onto the pitch and attempting to break down barriers between them and the pitch. They also unfurled a banner reading "Kosovo is Serbia".Despite this, and while police attempted to move into the away section to subdue the troublemakers, kick-off eventually went ahead. Within minutes, however, flares had been thrown onto the pitch and into the home supporters enclosure. The game was then halted, and after a prolonged discussion, the Uefa delegate ruled that it should be suspended. Although there has not yet been official confirmation of the game being cancelled altogether, that now seems inevitable after some players were seen fully dressed leaving the dressing room.Euro 2012ItalySerbiaPaolo Bandini guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Though Chile were pushing for a winner, the game looked like it was heading for extra-time time until Cichero struck. Both teams ended the match with 10 men, as Chiles Gary Medel and Venezuelas Tomas Rincon were both sent off in the closing minutes.Venezuelas victory completed a remarkable set of quarter-final results - Argentina, Brazil and Colombia had already fallen at the same stage, and Chile had been fancied to win.Copa America 2011VenezuelaChile guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Serena Williams reaches third round of the US Open in emphatic fashion
Serena Williams defeats Michaella Krajicek 6-0, 6-1 American could face No4 seed, Victoria Azarenka, nextSerena Williams eased into the third round of the US Open with a 6-0, 6-1 victory inside 50 minutes against the qualifier Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.Williams, seeded 28th at Flushing Meadows, was far too powerful for her opponent, who is ranked 173rd in the world. The gulf in class was obvious in the opening games and Williams flew into a 5-0 lead inside 20 minutes.Krajicek, 22, attempted to get herself back into the game but anything new she tried was not enough to find a way past an in-form Williams, who wrapped up the first set in 23 minutes with another superb game. The Dutchwoman finally held serve at the start of the second set but she was being forced into chasing winners off almost every delivery as Williams continued to dominate. The 29-year-old American, whose sister Venus withdrew from the tournament after revealing she suffers from the auto-immune disease Sjogrens syndrome, faced more of a challenge to win the second set but after taking a pivotal point during the fifth game she never looked back.Williams completed the match in typically emphatic style and could face the fourth seed, Victoria Azarenka, in the next round.Serena WilliamsUS Open 2011US Open tennisTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Ajax upset crowd of 20,000 children by losing their Dutch cup replay
Ajax gave schools free tickets for replay against AZ Alkmaar Original tie was abandoned after fan attacked goalkeeperAjax were beaten 3-2 in their Dutch Cup replay at home to AZ Alkmaar, watched by an invited crowd of around 20,000 noisy under-13s and their adult supervisors. The original tie at the Amsterdam Arena was abandoned on 21 December when a fan ran on to the pitch and attacked Alkmaars goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado, who immediately retaliated and was sent off - though his red card was later rescinded.Ajax were initially ordered to replay the game in an empty stadium, but the club appealed, asking the Dutch FA to allow women and children to attend. The ruling body decided that only the latter would be allowed in because of a national law of comparable treatment for men and women.Ajax handed out free tickets to clubs and primary schools for children aged under 13, with one adult supervisor allowed in to look after every six of them.Roared on by the vociferous young Ajax crowd, Siem de Jong put the home team ahead after 10 minutes. But Alkmaar hit back when Charlison Benschop set up Maarten Martens for the equaliser 14 minutes later, before Rasmus Elm set up Benschop to fire the away side ahead.A blunder from Esteban then allowed De Jong to equalise on 37 minutes, but Alkmaar scored the decisive goal 10 minutes into the second half when Elm converted a penalty after Toby Alderweireld handled.Alkmaar will host the amateurs GVVV Veenendaal in the quarter-finals.AjaxAZ Alkmaar guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
