Robson ignites equality controversy
British tennis player wears rainbow-coloured hairband in Australian Open match in Margaret Court arenaThe British tennis player Laura Robson walked unwittingly into a political row in Melbourne on Monday when she wore a rainbow-coloured hairband in support of gay and lesbian rights during her match at the Australian Open. It was a gesture of solidarity that turned an otherwise disappointing day for British tennis into a wildly controversial one.The London teenager was playing a first-round match on the court named after Australias most decorated female player, Margaret Court, an evangelical Christian who has created widespread controversy, especially over the past month, with her provocative views on homosexuality.Robson, 18 next Saturday, was one of five British players who lost on the first day of the tournament but her trickiest assignment was fielding questions afterwards about her hairband. She claimed not to be making a political statement, and said she was unaware of a call by gay rights activists to take rainbow-coloured flags into the Margaret Court Arena."It was just a rainbow-coloured hairband," Robson said. "I didnt see anything about a protest today. I wore it because I believe in equal rights for everyone. Thats it."She did, however, know of the recent comments Court had made, which were reported here and internationally because of her standing in the game. Her stand will be seen in a favourable light by those critics of Court astounded by her insensitivity on a subject that is regularly an issue in womens tennis."I did [know about the comments]," Robson said, "but it was through newspapers and things. I never saw a direct quote from her. So I dont want to comment when I actually havent spoken to her. I believe in equal rights for everyone - that is why I wore it."Court was a Catholic but became an evangelical Christian in 1972, the year before winning the last of 11 Australian titles. She won a record 24 grand slams and is regarded as one of the greatest players in the games history. She is now the senior pastor at the Victory life Centre in Perth, which she founded in the 1990s.However, her reputation has taken a battering since she made remarks last month that infuriated gay rights activists and provoked criticism from openly gay tennis champions such as Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King and the Australian Rennae Stubbs, who commentates on tennis on Australian television.Court accused gay people of indulging in "abominable sexual practices" and described same-sex marriages, promoted by legislation introduced by the current Labor government in Australia, as "unhealthy, unnatural unions".She told the Australian newspaper: "I have nothing against homosexual people. I help them to overcome. We have people [at the Victory Life Centre] who have been homosexual who are now married."In an interview last month with the West Australian, Court said: "Politically correct education has masterfully escorted homosexuality out from behind closed doors, into the community openly and now is aggressively demanding marriage rights that are not theirs to take. The fact that the homosexual cry is, We cant help it, as we were born this way, as the cause behind their own personal choice is cause for concern."Navratilova, who has been open about her sexuality for many years, was appalled when told of Courts views."A lot of people have evolved," she told the tennis website tennischannel.com, "as has the Bible. Unfortunately, Margaret Court has not ... Her myopic view is truly frightening as well as damaging to the thousands of children already living in same-gender families."Tennis Australia, the sports governing body in the country, was embarrassed when the furore broke and issued a statement condemning Courts views: "Her personal views are her own, and are definitely not shared by Tennis Australia."We concur wholeheartedly with the WTA [Womens Tennis Association] who stated that all human beings, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or otherwise, should be treated equally."In 1973, when she was the leading player in the world, Court took park in a televised match in California with the former world No1 mens player, Bobby Riggs, then 55, losing in two sets. She was inducted into her sports Hall of Fame six years later and, in 2003, had the fourth court at Melbourne Park named after her.The rainbow protest on Margaret Court Arena did not materialise in any noticeable way. However, after losing her match to the Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-2, 6-0, Robson left the court and into a row of which she was only vaguely aware.Laura RobsonAustralian Open 2012Australian OpenTennisGay rightsMartina NavratilovaAustraliaAsia PacificKevin Mitchell guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Gomez urges gay players to come out
Striker breaks ranks with German football federation, who had warned that coming out could destroy a players careerA leading German footballer has urged gay players to come out and called for a radical rethink about homosexuality in the sport. The Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has broken ranks with the football establishment, including members of his own team and the German football federation, who have warned that coming out could destroy a players career. But Gomez, who has not said whether he is gay, told a German magazine that being honest about their sexuality would improve gay players performance."They would play as if they had been liberated," Gomez said. "Being gay should no longer be a taboo topic."The 25-year-old, who was voted German footballer of the year in 2006-7, added that there were plenty of role models in the rest of German society to give gay players the courage to come out. "Weve got a gay vice-chancellor [Guido Westerwelle]; the Berlin mayor [Klaus Wowereit] is gay. So professional footballers should own up to their preference," he said. There are no openly gay players in Germanys Bundesliga, reflecting the situation across the football world, although it is estimated that about 10% of players are gay.The only German footballer to have come out is Marcus Urban, who told his teammates in 1997 and promptly ended his professional career. The 39-year-old waited until 2007 before going public with his story, saying he had hoped to encourage other gay players and trainers to come out and thus contribute to more acceptance and tolerance in football.Gomez is the first leading player to urge his homosexual colleagues to go public. Others have been vehemently against such a move, saying it would harm a footballers career. In an interview this year, Tim Wiese, who plays in goal for the national team and Werder Bremen, advised gay players against coming out, saying they would be "destroyed" by "merciless fans"."Despite the fact that it now has lots of female fans, football is still a macho sport," he said.Philipp Lahm, a defender for Bayern Munich who captained the German team at the World Cup in South Africa, told Playboy magazine in an interview that players would be unable to cope with the pressure of outing themselves. "A player who chooses to out himself has to carry out his job in front of tens of thousands of spectators."The German football federation (DFB) said that while it was campaigning against homophobia in football and would support any player who chose to come out, it could not ignore the problems that would accompany such a decision."The first homosexual who outs himself in professional football will not have an easy time of it," said DFB president Theo Zwanziger. "I had thought it would not be the case, because in politics, art and culture it is no longer a problem. Even amateur football deals with it better, but professional football appears to be more set in its ways."Gomezs comments were made in a week in which German football has been reflecting on the death a year ago of national goalkeeper Robert Enke, who suffered from chronic depression and killed himself.Enkes death has contributed to a new spirit of openness in the sport, including encouraging players to have the courage to share their personal problems. The only British footballer to have outed himself while active in the sport was Justin Fashanu in 1990. The Sun newspaper paid him a six-figure sum to run the headline: "I am gay." Fashanu killed himself in 1998 after a 17-year-old boy accused him of sexual assault, a charge he denied.GermanyBayern MunichGay rightsGermanyEuropean footballBundesligaKate Connolly guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Military chief favors ending "don't ask, don't tell"
Adm. Mike Mullen Testifying before the Senate today, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that ending the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy would be “the right thing to do.” Mullen told the Senate’s Armed Services committee gay people should be allowed to serve openly in the nation’s armed forces. President Obama repeatedly stated his opposition to the policy during his campaign for the White House, and pledged during the State of the Union address last week to repeal the ban within a year. Mullen stressed he was “speaking for myself and myself only.” Defense Secretary Robert Gates appeared before the same Senate panel, announcing that he would initiate a year-long review of the policy. “The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we best prepare for it,” Gates said. “We received our orders from the commander-in-chief and we are moving out accordingly.” “Don’t ask, don’t tell” was passed by Congress in 1993, and permitted gay men and lesbians to serve as long as they kept their sexual orientation secret. “homosexual conduct,” however, was sufficient grounds for discharge from the military. Since then, nearly 11,000 troops have been dismissed under the [detalii...]

Former world champion Graeme Obree reveals battle with sexuality
Scottish cyclist admits he attempted to commit suicide twice I was brought up thinking youd be better dead than gayThe former world individual pursuit champion Graeme Obree has revealed how his struggles to come to terms with his sexuality led him to attempt to commit suicide twice. The 45-year-old from Ayrshire broke the world hour record in 1993 on his bike Old Faithful, made from recycled washing machine parts, before going on to world championship success in the individual pursuit. However, Obree has now revealed the difficulties he encountered in his private life as he struggled to accept he was gay, which included two attempts to take his own life. "I was brought up thinking youd be better dead than gay," he told the Scottish Sun. "I must have known I was gay and it was so unacceptable."I was brought up by a war generation - they grew up when gay people were put in jail. Being homosexual was so unthinkable that you just wouldnt be gay. Id no inkling about anything, I just closed down."People say, How can you be gay and be married and have kids and not know it? But when I went to my psychologist she reckoned I had the emotional age of about 13 because Id just closed down."Obree began to talk about his sexuality to a psychologist in 2005 and then had to break the news to his wife - from whom he is now divorced - his children and his parents. "It did create a bit of tension," he added."My parents had to come to terms with the whole gay thing, its been a journey for them. It was difficult and there were lots of tears. It wasnt easy. But the relationship with my parents has been improved by it.
