Wimbledon 2011: No repeat of Queens Club heroics as James Ward exits
British No2 defeated in straight sets by Michael Llodra Andy Murray the only Briton left in mens singlesJames Ward could not produce a repeat of his Queens Club heroics as he became the latest British man to exit Wimbledon in the first round with a straight-sets defeat by the 19th seed, Michael Llodra. The Londoner beat Sam Querrey and Stanislas Wawrinka en route to the semi-finals Queens, but he could not find a way past Frances Llodra, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 on Court Two.Ward lost his first service game before Llodra hit a number of blistering serves to win the opening set with an ace. Llodras powerful serve proved too much for the 24-year-old in a second-set tie-break and Britains No2 was broken early in the third to seal his defeat.Ward joined the wild cards Dan Evans and Dan Cox in falling at the first hurdle, meaning that the fourth seed, Andy Murray, will be the only British man in the second round.Ward admitted the failure to win his first-set tie-break was key to his defeat. "I was 4-2 up in the breaker," he said. "He hit a great slice just over the net and thats not an easy ball to deal with. If I had won that set, you never know what might have happened. The momentum might have changed."Wards conceded that his poor first serve success ratio - he landed only 50 in 98 attempts- was also an important factor. "My serve let me down a little bit, especially in the third set," he said. "I still had chances though. I still had a lot of break points out there and a lot of chances but he came up with the goods at the right time."Ward will now play in the mens doubles, where he will be paired with Cox.Wimbledon 2011WimbledonJames WardTennis guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Murali Kartik gives Somerset the edge in Group C after stifling Essex
Indians all-round display sees visitors win at Southend Hortons heroics pull off huge victory chase for LancashireSomerset consolidated their position at the top of the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C with a comfortable six-wicket victory over Essex at Southend. With only group winners guaranteed to qualify for the semi-finals, Somerset owed much to a fine all-round display from their Indian spinner, Murali Kartik. He opened the bowling and ended with figures of two for 24 from eight overs as the hosts were restricted to a meagre 140 for nine, and then top-scored with 40 from 52 balls as the visitors eased to victory.Runs were more plentiful in the other Group C games, not least at Cheltenham where Lancashire successfully chased down a target of 291 against Gloucestershire, an unbeaten 97 from 90 balls from Paul Horton steering the visitors home with 11 balls to spare.Glamorgan could not quite repeat those heroics at Swansea where Nottinghamshire moved above Essex into second place after racking up 281 for six, thanks in no small part to an unbeaten 103 from Adam Voges. A run-a-ball 90 from Gareth Rees gave the hosts hope, but their chase eventually fell short at 260 for eight. In Group A, the Netherlands moved up to third after defeating Yorkshire by four wickets in Amstelveen. Yorkshire were bowled out for 123 with only Adil Rashids 43 stemming the flow of wickets. The Netherlands looked briefly in danger of not reaching their lowly target before a rapid 34 from Peter Borren eventually saw them home.In the other Group A game at New Road, a fine 124 from Martin van Jaarsveld set the platform for Kent to score 291 for seven and defeat Worcestershire by 86 runs.In Group B Durham moved level on points with leaders Surrey after a brilliant unbeaten 129 from the one-time England wicketkeeper-batsman Phil Mustard saw the hosts defeat Warwickshire by five wickets at Chester-le-Street. Hampshires Sean Ervine was in similarly inspirational form in the other Group B game at the Rose Bowl, the Zimbabwean all-rounder striking 136 from 106 balls to set up a 53-run win over Leicestershire.Meanwhile, in the County Championship, Middlesex can close the gap at the top of Division Two if they can knock off the 91 they require for victory on Monday against Derbyshire at Lords. Steven Finn was among the wickets, taking three for 53 as the visitors were bowled out for 243 in their second innings, a lead of just 90.CricketClydesdale Bank 40 2011Clydesdale Bank 40County Championship Division TwoCounty Championship 2011 Division TwoSomersetEssexLancashireGloucestershireGlamorganNottinghamshireYorkshireHampshireLeicestershireKentWorcestershireMiddlesexDerbyshireDurhamNetherlands cricket team guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Talking Horses
Todays best bets and the latest racing newsTodays best bets, by Greg WoodA more low-key afternoon at Ascot today, and even Mr Ascot himself, Frankie Dettori, is elsewhere after his four-timer heroics yesterday. The scratching of Motrice from the Fenwolf Stakes is irritating too. Sir Mark Prescott suggested when she was taken out of the Cesarewitch, for which she was 8-1 favourite, that she was unlikely to run again this season, but she is such an interesting staying prospect that, having made it as far as the final declarations for todays race, it would have been good to get another look at her.Of those that remain, Tastahil (3.35) looks the most solid option, while Brian Meehan may now have settled on six furlongs as the ideal trip for Lady Of The Desert (4.45) and she can continue the progress she showed at Haydock last time by winning the Diadem Stakes. It may pay to wait until the final race for the bet of the day, though, as Benandonner (5.20) has done little wrong in his last three outings and remains on a handy mark. His draw could be better, but at around 7-1, it is worth the risk.Elsewhere, Revue Princess (Musselburgh 3.25) and Billie Magern (Market Rasen 4.20) make most appeal.Horse racingHorse racing tipsGreg Wood guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

St Louis Cardinals v Philadelphia Phillies - live! | Steve Busfield
Cardinals v Phillies: game 5 live coverage Winner will play in NLCS v winner of Dbacks v Brewers Email or tweet Steve Busfield with all your thoughts Press F5 to refresh this page or use our auto-refresherPreamble: The best record in baseball counts for little tonight, its a game five decider between the St Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies. This one could be all about the pitchers: its Chris Carpenter for the Cardinals and Roy Halladay for the Phillies. Carpenter performed heroics on the last night of the regular season to get the Cardinals into the postseason, but Halladay is the ace in a pack full of Phillies pitching aces.Another subtext to this game is that it could be Albert Pujols last appearance in a Cards uniform. More on that later.Coverage of this game will start as soon as the Dbacks and the Brewers have finished their match up.In the meantime, if you didnt catch the earlier liveblog, heres Moneyball: Yankees-style:Hat Tip again to Julian BorrillMLBUS sportSteve Busfield guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Sam Stosur gets Roland Garros revenge over Francesca Schiavone in Rome
Australian reaches Masters semi-finals with 6-2, 6-4 win Italian beat Stosur in French Open final last yearA year ago Francesca Schiavone left herself, her opponent Sam Stosur and much of Paris in tears with her victory in the final of the French Open. On Friday the little Italian had a similarly engaged audience on Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico, her home pitch, but could not reproduce the heroics of Roland Garros and Stosur marched on to the semi-finals with a 6-2, 6-4 win in an hour and 17 minutes. It looked briefly in the second set as if the Milanese battler might overturn the young Australians strong back-of-court game but she faltered on tired legs, as the Roman heat kicked in viciously in mid-afternoon.If these two good friends meet again in the French final, it will no doubt be another occasion to savour. Sadly the evidence suggests that will not happen. Schiavone has been struggling with her game for some time; Stosur has rediscovered her best form. The scoreboard records nearly everything but sentimentality. Pietersen strikes late as England scent victory at Adelaide Oval
Michael Clarke dismissed in final over Australia still trail by 137 runs going into last dayKevin Pietersen claimed a key wicket with the last ball of the day following his earlier heroics with the bat to give England real encouragement in their pursuit of victory in the second Ashes Test in Adelaide. The batsman, who scored a career-best Test score of 227 to help England to 620 for five declared, struck with his occasional spin to unseat Michael Clarke for 80 after he had looked to be in for the long haul alongside Australia team-mate Mike Hussey. The fourth-wicket pair had given Australia, set 375 to make England bat again, hope of forcing a draw but the dismissal of Clarke gives the tourists added impetus heading into the final day of the match.Australia closed on 238 for four - still trailing by 137 runs - and were left hoping that the forecast adverse weather comes to their aid tomorrow in a bid to keep the series level. The AshesCricketEngland cricket teamAustralia cricket team guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
