Wales flanker Robin Sowden-Taylor joins Newport-gwent Dragons
Openside released by Cardiff Blues Says he wants Wales World Cup placeThe Newport-gwent Dragons have signed the Wales back-row forward Robin Sowden-Taylor, who was released by the Cardiff Blues this summer, on a two-year contract.Sowden-Taylor will compete with Gavin Thomas for the openside shirt at Rodney Parade after ending his seven-year spell with the Blues. The 28-year-old, who was part of Waless Six Nations grand slam winning squad of 2005, has been capped eight times. He last played for Wales against the USA in June 2009."The main reason for my move was to get regular rugby," said Sowden-Taylor. "Thats something I struggled with a bit at Cardiff and I dont think I have been able to reach my full potential. With a World Cup coming up I really think I can push for a place in the squad."Last week the Dragons signed Scott Morgan, a back-five forward also released by the Blues. The Wales and Lions flanker Andy Powell also left the City of Cardiff Stadium this summer. He has signed for Wasps.Newport gwent DragonsCardiff BluesMagners LeagueRugby union guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Gavin Henson handed Wales starting spot for England match
Henson will line-up in midfield alongside Jamie Roberts James Hook replaces injured full-back Morgan StoddartGavin Henson has been handed his chance to push for World Cup selection when Wales face England at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.Henson will line-up in midfield alongside Jamie Roberts, who moves to outside centre. The 29-year-old has said he needs to produce something "pretty special" as he pursues a World Cup place after missing out in 2003 and 2007.Henson is one of four changes from the team beaten 23-19 by England as Wales go into their penultimate World Cup warm-up game. The versatile James Hook replaces full-back Morgan Stoddart, who broke his leg at Twickenham and will miss the World Cup, with Stoddarts Scarlets colleague Rhys Priestland continuing in the fly-half role. The other switches are up front, where Newport gwent Dragons hooker Lloyd Burns gains a first Test start, and his club-mate, lock Luke Charteris, takes over from Bradley Davies in the second row.The Wales coach Warren Gatland has otherwise retained the team on duty at Twickenham, although there are potential opportunities off the bench for young forwards Josh Turnbull and Justin Tipuric.Flanker Sam Warburton will again skipper the side, but former Wales captain Ryan Jones is ruled out because of a calf problem.Wales team to play England J Hook (Perpignan); G North (Scarlets), J Roberts (Cardiff Blues), G Henson (unattached), Shane Williams (Ospreys); R Priestland (Scarlets), M Phillips (Bayonne); P James (Ospreys), L Burns (Newport gwent Dragons), C Mitchell (Exeter), L Charteris (Newport gwent Dragons), AW Jones (Ospreys), D Lydiate (Newport gwent Dragons), S Warburton (Cardiff Blues, captain), T Faletau (Newport gwent Dragons).Replacements: H Bennett (Ospreys), R Bevington (Ospreys), J Turnbull (Scarlets), J Tipuric (Ospreys), T Knoyle (Scarlets), Scott Williams (Scarlets), A Brew (Newport gwent Dragons).Millennium Stadium, Saturday 13 August, 2.30pmGavin HensonWales rugby union teamRugby World Cup 2011Rugby union guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Glasgow Warriors 21-13 Newport gwent Dragons | Heineken Cup match report
Glasgow Warriors 21-13 Newport gwent DragonsThe Glasgow coach, Sean Lineen, was satisfied with the efforts of his players as they opened their Heineken Cup campaign with a 21-13 success against the Dragons in Pool Six.Tries from Graeme Morrison and Fergus Thomson sealed the win for the home side and although they had some shaky spells, their pace behind the scrum always had the visitors in trouble.Lineen said: "We have to be happy with that performance because we have been working hard over the past couple of weeks and we knew that it would come."It was fantastic effort by the pack and young players like Richie Gray and Rob Harley were outstanding."We managed to get the tempo of the game up and we turned some of the pressure into points but you could see how anxious the players were with some of the chances we missed."This win makes a huge difference to our confidence going into our next match with our defence the way it was tonight and the way we controlled the contact area, we have had a big boost."The Dragons coach, Paul Turner, said: "This was a step up for us and our defence is improving week on week but tonight we couldnt get enough of a foothold on the game to make a real challenge."We scrambled pretty well at times and we have to be disappointed in not getting more points on the board, but we are missing some real carrying power at the moment."Rugby unionGlasgow RugbyNewport gwent Dragons guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
