Golden rower Tom James forces his way back into Olympic reckoning
Welshman heads the British squads internal rankings James presents challenge to Triggs-Hodge and ReedTom James, one of the men who took a fours gold medal in Beijing, has made a dramatic return to the sport by heading the rankings of the British squads internal races, held last weekend. The Welshmen took a year out after Beijing 2008 and missed the 2010 season after an operation for a back injury. But the 27-year-old, who is still intent on forcing his way into the teams top boat in 2012, surprised with his performance. On this form, it is likely that James could have a major influence on the shape of the British Olympic team.James will now be teamed up with Alex gregory, a former fours world champion, who also came well in well in the internal series of races. Remarkably, though the two men have not raced together before, they share the same age and birthday.Britains chief coach, Jurgen Grobler, will be hoping that this new combination will have enough synchronicity and dynamism to challenge his top pair of Andrew Triggs-Hodge and Peter Reed - who were told by Grobler to sit out the trials. But despite being the anchor men of the British squad, since 2004, Triggs-Hodge and Reed - also Olympic champions - have recently suffered 11 straight defeats at the hands of New Zealands top pair. Now, Grobler will hope that the new partnership of James and gregory may just be the combination, either to beat Triggs-Hodge and Reed or push them hard enough to help them find more speed for the 2011 season. The 38-year-old Greg Searle is also a man in search of more speed. The Barcelona Olympic champion wants a second gold in 2012 but found the pace tough last weekend. While his physiology is still developing well, Searle knows he must be fully focused on delivering a better result in the next crucial trials race, now just four weeks away.RowingOlympic Games 2012Martin Cross guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Chelsea hopes rise in their pursuit of Ajaxs gregory van der Wiel
Bayern Munich drop interest in 9m-rated full-back World Cup finalist fancies a change from AmsterdamChelseas chances of securing the Holland full-back gregory van der Wiel from Ajax this summer appear to have been enhanced after reports in Germany that Bayern Munich, the defenders other principal suitor, have dropped their interest.Van der Wiel, 23, has long featured on the Chelsea wish-list as they look to revitalise their squad following the January purchases of Fernando Torres and David Luiz. The Dutchmans arrival would cast doubt over the futures of Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa - the latter will be entering the final 12 months of his contract - though the club had anticipated moving some senior players on anyway.Ajax anticipate losing Van der Wiel, who featured in five of Hollands games at the 2010 World Cup, including the final. The defender, whose contract in Amsterdam runs to the summer of 2013, is likely to command a fee of around 9m.The player is apparently excited at the prospect of moving on. "Ive never left Amsterdam and I dont know what life is like elsewhere," he said in an interview with fifa.com. "It would be a huge challenge [to move] but it ought to work out well - Im sure of that. I want to win trophies, keep progressing and play at the very highest level."Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, should have a fully fit squad from which to pick for Saturdays match against Tottenham Hotspur as they seek to prolong their unlikely attempt to retain the title. Ashley Cole, who has been troubled with an ankle complaint, trained as normal at Cobham on Wednesday and Alex returned after missing the past two matches with a hamstring complaint. The midfielders Ramires (hamstring) and Michael Essien (tendon above the left knee) did not take part and will continue to be assessed but Ancelotti will hope to have both available as he seeks to cut Manchester Uniteds lead to three points, albeit potentially for only 24 hours.ChelseaAjaxBayern MunichDominic Fifield guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Swedens Alex Noren strolls to Wales Open triumph at Celtic Manor
gregory Bourdy and Anders Hansen share second place Elliot Saltman records remarkable hole-in-one-doubleSwedens Alex Noren won the Wales Open by two strokes at Celtic Manor on Sunday. The 28-year-old from Stockholm, whose only previous victory was the 2009 European Masters, shot an accomplished closing round of 70 for a nine-under aggregate of 275.Anders Hansen of Denmark and Frances gregory Bourdy shared second place and the day was also notable for Scotlands Elliot Saltman holing-in-one at the 17th for the second time in the tournament.Noren had resumed one ahead of Hansen and Peter Hanson, but by the 7th green that had swelled to four.Hansen was the first to fall back, taking a double-bogey seven on the long 2nd after his ball plugged in sand.Hanson went joint top with a 10-foot putt at the 4th, but missed a three-foot opportunity at the next, double-bogeyed the 6th after failing to make it over the water with his approach and then three-putted the next.Bourdy set the target of seven-under with a birdie at the par-five last and Hansens birdie at the short 17th meant he still had a chance. But although Noren went over the green in two at the last and then played a poor chip, Hansen was bunkered, came out 18 feet past the flag and both took five.Johan Edfors, another Swede, eagled the hole to share fourth with Argentinas Ricardo Gonzalez, who came back from an opening triple-bogey seven to shoot a 67.Earlier Saltman, playing in only his fifth event since returning from a three-month ban for incorrect ball-marking, had seen his seven-ironshot drop in at the 17th, just as he had done in Thursdays first round, to become the first man since Eamonn Darcy in 1991 to complete the feat twice in the same tournament."Im just overwhelmed with it - amazing," said Saltman. "I hit a great seven-iron, it bounced once and in she pops. Im so excited."Meanwhile Englands Melissa Reid made four birdies in her final round of 70 to claim victory in the Dutch Ladies Open by a shot. She began the day on one-under and coped well with the cool conditions in Vlaardingen to finish the tournament on three-under.GolfEuropean Tour guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Somerset v Warwickshire | County Championship match report
Somerset 262; Warwickshire 86-0Just as many fine West Indian bowlers of the 70s and 80s were destined to play little Test cricket, so England currently have an embarrassment of riches in their stock of fast bowlers. There was a time when a towering seamer like Boyd Rankin - 6ft 7in and broad as an ox - would have demanded selection in the England team. With the likes of Chris Tremlett, Stuart Broad and Steve Finn in front of him, however, Rankin may have to content himself with playing limited-overs internationals for Ireland. On this form, however, he would be a fine understudy to the likes of Tremlett. Generating sharp pace and gaining steep bounce, Rankin was the one man on either side to overcome a sluggish pitch and at one stage dismissed the cream of Somersets batting in a 22-ball spell of three wickets for four runs.First went James Hildreth, pushing at one that lifted sharply, edged to slip, before Craig Kieswetter tentatively played on and Marcus Trescothick, who had just become the first man to 1,000 first-class runs this season, was caught down the leg side attempting to glance. If the wicket was somewhat fortuitous, perhaps Rankin had earned it for the preceding spell. He twice struck Trescothick - once on the head and once on the body - with balls pitched just back of a length that climbed horribly. He finished with four for 41.A sixth-wicket partnership of 75 between Lewis gregory and Peter Trego dragged Somerset back into the game, but when Rikki Clarke struck with successive deliveries, first to york gregory and then to take the outside edge of Mural Kartiks oddly aggressive drive, Somersets long tail was exposed.Warwickshire are hopeful of signing the West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul from July onwards. The club have lost patience with the indecision of Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistani batsman who played six championship games for them earlier this season and decided to omit Jeetan Patel, the New Zealand off-spinner they signed for this years FLt20 competition, in order to provide more opportunity for their own 20-year-old left-arm spinner, Chris Metters. Metters responded with a wicket with his first delivery, though Patel could still play at Arundel next week if the wicket looks conducive to spin bowling. In the longer term, Warwickshire remain keen to sign James Taylor. Although the 21-year-old is contracted at Grace Road until the end of 2012, Warwickshire hope that the offer of compensation will persuade Leicestershire to let him go.County Championship Division OneWarwickshireSomersetCricket guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Chelsea hoping to add to David Luizs imminent arrival at the Bridge
Chelsea likely to meet Benficas 25.5m valuation gregory van der Wiel and Romelu Lukaku on wish listChelseas spending in the transfer window may not be limited to the imminent arrival of David Luiz from Benfica, with the club considering strengthening in other areas if they receive encouragement that long-standing targets have become available.Negotiations between the Premier League champions and the Benfica president, Luis Filipe Vieira, continued today with sources in Portugal suggesting the make-up of the proposed deal was still under discussion.Chelsea had hoped to pay around 21.5m for Luiz and to loan one of their promising young players - Jeffrey Bruma or Patrick van Aanholt had been mentioned - to the Portuguese club until the end of the season in exchange.Benfica, however, are insistent that any makeweight should join on a permanent basis and, as a result, Chelsea are considering meeting the Portuguese clubs revised 30m (25.5m) valuation in a straight cash deal. That offer would be acceptable to Vieira for the 23-year-old centre-half, who would become the Londoners most expensive signing since Andriy Shevchenko moved from Milan for 30m in the summer of 2006.An application for a work permit is due to be heard on Wednesday, offering an indication of how close a resolution in negotiations is. Although securing Luiz would represent a significant statement of intent and a timely backing of Carlo Ancelotti as manager, Chelsea could re-enter the market over the remainder of the month to supplement a squad that has appeared paper thin at times this season. An attempt was made last week to secure Steven Pienaar from Everton, the player eventually opting to move to Tottenham Hotspur, but, with qualification for the Champions League imperative, other targets may be pursued.A list of potential signings has been drawn up in discussions between Ancelotti and the Chelsea hierarchy, with players such as Ajaxs defender gregory van der Wiel, the Anderlecht forward Romelu Lukaku, the Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and the forward Alexis Sanchez of Udinese thought to be under consideration. Ancelotti has also been a longa€‘standing admirer of the Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi.Gael Kakuta, another youngster who had attracted interest from Benfica, is expected to join Fulham on loan until the end of the season to further his own development. Chelsea recently tied the Frenchman to a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge and will not entertain thoughts of allowing him to leave on a permanent basis.ChelseaBenficaTransfer windowDominic Fifield guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Jol to reject Fulham and stay with Ajax
Dutchman was favourite to become Craven Cottage manager Change of heart comes after Ajax promise transfer fundsMartin Jol looks set to reject the chance to manage Fulham and instead remain at Ajax. The Dutchman had looked a certainty to replace Roy Hodgson at Craven Cottage having become frustrated at Ajax - with whom he last year finished second in the Eredivisie and won the Dutch cup - but having spoken with the clubs hierarchy, he now appears ready to remain in Amsterdam."They [Fulham] were interested but in principle I will stay at Ajax," Jol told the Amsterdam-based newspaper De Telegraaf this morning.Jol had been told he was not able to recruit this summer until the Holland right-back gregory van der Wiel and the Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez had departed - freeing up funds. But Ajaxs financial director, Jeroen Slop, and the chief executive, Rik van den Boog, have now, it is believed, told the former Tottenham Hotspur manager that he can bring in a cheap right-wing option and then spend more once Van der Wiel and Suarez leave. The plan needs to be approved by the clubs supervisory board - headed by Uri Coronel - but that is unlikely to be a problem after they recruited Jol just a year ago.Fulham guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
