Six Nations 2011: Wales look to talisman Shane Williams to embarrass Italy
Winger is confident of good display in Italy There is a lot more to come from us and I expect big thingsShane Williams is 34 on Saturday. He may be the oldest winger in town but he holds the torch for Wales as they grope their way out of the darkness that enveloped them in 2010. If they are to end their record of losing to Italy in Rome during a Six Nations campaign in a World Cup year, Williams will need to be at his most inspired. His two tries against Scotland at Murrayfield in the last round helped Wales to their first victory in nine Tests and took the Osprey to 55 in internationals, nine behind Australias David Campese. His first was a flashback to 2008, grand slam year: he spotted, after the men in red had taken play through six phases, that James Hook had a prop in front of him and darted into midfield for the scoring pass he knew would come.It was Wales at their best, but the need for victory became all-consuming in Scotland and they reverted to a policy of containment after Williamss early score. They will need to exploit Williamss capacity for turning up in unexpected places against an Italy team that struggles in high tempo contests."It was not the prettiest of performances in Scotland, but it was a great one because we got the win we needed," said Williams. "In the past, we have played eye-catching rugby and lost. You can be ugly and win, which is perhaps what we were in Scotland. There is a lot more to come from us and I expect big things from this team. I am very proud of my try record and feel I can catch Campese in the next 12 months."Williams may be Waless oldest player, but he seems to get younger every year. At an age when most wings have succumbed to anno domini, he continues on his dazzling, dancing way, his ambition heightened, rather than dimmed, by the tries he adds to his Wales record. Wingers are emerging, such as the 18-year old George North, who made a try-scoring return for Scarlets on Thursday, but Wales are nowhere near the point where they can contemplate life without Williams. While Italy struggled to cope with Chris Ashtons forays into midfield at Twickenham two weeks ago Wales are focusing on the Azzurris opening game, against Ireland in Rome, when they fell to a late Ronan OGara drop goal. They had no set-piece foundation against England: only four scrums were completed and their lineout malfunctioned, allowing the home side to dictate the pace.England are playing as Wales aspire to. The victory over Scotland will repair confidence: it is a question of degree. Italys Six Nations successes in Rome have come against Scotland and Wales, when both teams were struggling. They have pushed Ireland and England close when those sides were enduring periods of introspection, but they have conceded an average of 46 points to France in five matches at the Stadio Flaminio when they have been confronted at forward and run into a spin behind.Wales need to start strongly, as they did in Scotland. Italy have problems at half-back and will not welcome Jamie Roberts running down their outside-half channel. Roberts has come to personify Waless decline, a player operating some way below his optimum. He needs to start demanding the ball, just as Mike Phillips has to give his forwards a target and Lee Byrne make the angled runs that made him regarded as the worlds leading full-back two years ago. There is nothing wrong with Waless spirit, but with six Lions in their back division they have the capacity to take a game to opponents. Italy, with France at home and Scotland away to follow, know this is their best chance of avoiding the whitewash."England was an important mental test for us and we messed up," said the Italy captain, Sergio Parisse. "We showed we are not mature and we are a team that must always be afraid of getting thrashed."Wales have the capacity to embarrass the Azzurri and the more Shane Williams touches the ball, the more they will win by.Wales rugby union teamItaly rugby union teamSix NationsRugby unionPaul Rees guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Philippe Saint-Andre to become France coach after World Cup
Former captain to replace Marc Lievremont on 1 December Saint-Andre to leave director of rugby post at ToulonThe former France captain Philippe Saint-Andre will replace Marc Lievremont as national coach after the Rugby World Cup, the French rugby federation said in a statement on Thursday. The current director of rugby at Toulon will take charge on 1 December. The World Cup runs from 9 September to 23 October and France have been drawn in Group A alongside New Zealand, Japan, Canada and Tonga. An announcement before the tournament was widely expected and Lievremont, who did not want to extend his four-year stint, told LEquipe this week: "It does not embarrass me at all that the federation is addressing the issue, the opposite is the case."Saint-Andre, 44, was a wing who won 68 caps for France in the 1990s, 34 as captain. He had success as a club coach with Sale Sharks and moved to Toulon in 2009. The federation statement said he would be presented at a news conference in Toulon on 30 August.Lievremont led France to the Six Nations title and a grand slam in 2010 but they finished second to England this year and he accused his players of cowardice after an upset loss to Italy. He was expected to be replaced after the World Cup, which France have never won although they have twice got to the final. Saint-Andres brother Raphael, also a rugby player, told LyonMag: "It is satisfying for him and a proud moment for all the family."France rugby union teamRugby unionRugby World Cup 2011Marc Lievremont guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

CCTV footage could embarrass England
Security guard threatens to release revealing images Watch World Cup video highlights, interviews and moreIf Martin Johnson is correct and England do thrive on adversity, then Romania, Scotland and their likely World Cup quarter-final opponents, France, had better watch out. Hot on the heels of the murky footage which showed Mike Tindall and a blonde in a bar in Queenstown come threats that more stolen CCTV images could be about to embarrass England further.According to Blair Impey, general manager of the now notorious Altitude Bar in Queenstown on South Island, New Zealand, where some England players, including the stand-in captain, chose to celebrate their opening World Cup victory, that CCTV footage was stolen by a security guard who is threatening to release more revealing images."Whether he actually does, I dont know," said Impey after making a statement to the police. However, there are enough reports of the content of this so-called "extra" footage to suggest that England are about to suffer yet another defeat in their rather hopeful attempts at putting a lid on the matter, which began on Thursday with the Rugby Football Union releasing a one-paragraph and one-sentence statement entitled "Statement on Mike Tindall" which concluded: "There will be no further comment."Since then Martin Johnson has barely been able to get off the subject - and that is before the wives and girlfriends, including Zara Phillips, arrive, possibly as soon as Monday. Yesterday, for once, Englands press minders did get their way, but by the simple expedient of banning questions on the Queenstown affair when the returning captain, Lewis Moody, gave his eve-of-match press conference for Sundays Pool B match against Georgia in Dunedin, due to start at 7am BST. Instead, Moody spoke about another ongoing issue - his leg and the damage it has suffered - but history suggests these issues do not go away. Those players with an obligation to provide columns for English newspapers made only cursory mention of the weeks events. Toby Flood, due to replace Jonny Wilkinson at No10, said: "We have dealt with it as a squad internally... if anything, we have pulled together as a squad." And the scrum-half Ben Youngs said: "It is nothing serious. The lads just went out for a drink. But it will bring us together and Im sure it will blow over very quickly."The England management may still hold to the adage that "what goes on tour, stays on tour" but that sentiment only held sway because it was coined in an era when mobile phones with cameras attached had not even figured in science fiction and no member of an England touring party had been a member of the extended royal family. If Johnson agreed to a night on the town and long before they came out here he said he would treat his players as adults and sensible ones at that, then someone with a memory of the events of 2008 might have had a quiet word. That way the England group combing a pretty sad area for enjoyment might have thought twice about sampling the delights of a bar advertising a "Mad Midget Weekender" and "Leprechaun Bar Wars", let alone getting into a position where some were pictured being tackled by the stars of the show.Johnson had already been appointed manager in 2008 and picked the tour party for New Zealand but stayed home for the birth of his second child, leaving Rob Andrew in charge of a tour which ended on a sour note - England refusing to help Auckland police after allegations that four players had been involved in serious misconduct. That Twickenham subsequently inquired into the events and decided against further action does not matter; it was more than a strong hint that the "on tour" adage meant nothing when high-profile professional sportsmen were in the public eye and especially in a land which is not averse to taking a poke at the - perceived - arrogant big earners from the mother country.Rugby World Cup 2011Mike TindallLewis MoodyEngland rugby union teamRugby unionMike Averis guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Preston North End embarrass neighbours Blackburn with 3-0 result
Paul Hayes scores two before half-time for Preston Wolves hammer Walsall, Wigan held by OldhamA lacklustre Blackburn Rovers were shown up by their Lancashire neighbours Preston North End in a 3-0 drubbing tonight. Two first-half headers from summer signing Paul Hayes, the second of them from a cross delivered by the former Blackburn player Keith Treacy, put Preston in control before Michel Salgado fouled Sean St Ledger and Chris Brown scored Prestons third from the penalty spot. There was better fortune for Wolverhampton Wanderers as a successful short trip to Walsall ended in a resounding 4-0 win.Ninteen-year-old striker Ashley Hemmings headed the opener from Greg Halfords fine cross and Sam Vokes scored twice in five minutes shortly before half-time, first tapping in Scott Malones cross and then seizing on defensive confusion to make it 3-0.Sylvan Ebanks-Blake powered into the box to smash home an emphatic fourth and substitute Kevin Doyle was a handful for the League One club, three times going close.Wigan Athletic were held to a 1-1 draw at Oldham and were forced to come from behind to secure that result, having fallen behind in the first half when Dale Stevens volleyed home superbly after running onto a poor clearance on the edge of Wigans 18-yard box.The equaliser came when Jordi Gomez was clumsily hauled down in the penalty area by Paul Black and got up to convert the penalty.Blackburn RoversPreston North EndDave Middleton guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
