WRU chief executive hopes for 45,000 crowd Only 35,500 at Aviva Stadium for Ireland TestSouth Africa are not proving to be crowd pullers this autumn. Little more than 35,500 fans were at the Aviva Stadium for their match against Ireland on Saturday and the Welsh Rugby Union has only sold 40,000 tickets for their next Test."We appreciate how tough it is financially for supporters," said the WRU chief executive, Roger Lewis."The crowd we had against Australia compared well to what we used to attract at the old National Stadium but it would be disappointing if we did not get more than 45,000 this weekend."Autumn internationalsWales rugby union teamSouth Africa rugby teamRugby unionPaul Rees guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

FA to investigate crowd trouble at West Bromwich Albion and Millwall
Black Country derby marred by violence in stands Supporters at Millwall threw objects on to pitchThe Football Association has confirmed it is investigating the crowd trouble that marred the Black Country derby and Middlesbroughs win at Millwall. The Premier League encounter between West Bromwich Albion and Wolves was overshadowed by trouble which started when a smoke bomb was thrown from the visiting fans section into the home crowd. The Albion supporters responded by hurling objects back at the Wolves fans, one of whom was pictured with blood streaming from his head. The FAs crowd-control officer at The Hawthorns will report back today on what he saw.Millwall may be facing disciplinary action after ugly scenes at The Den during Boros 3-2 win on Saturday. The referee, Chris Sarginson, had to stop the game on two occasions and considered calling the match off after the Boro goalkeeper Jason Steele and the assistant referee were the targets of bottles and other objects thrown from the crowd. The trouble began after the assistant allowed Scott McDonalds second-half goal to stand despite the player appearing to be in an offside position. An FA spokesman said: "We are awaiting the match officials report and we will be seeking observations from both clubs."Football violenceThe FAWest BromWolverhampton WanderersMillwallMiddlesbrough guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Wimbledon 2010: Victor Hanescu fined 10,000 for spitting incident
Courtside hooliganism in Hanescu match being investigated Hanescu fined for spitting towards crowd after receiving abuseAlleged abuse and drunken behaviour by four youths was said by witnesses to be responsible for the controversial exit of the Romanian Victor Hanescu. The four - three British and one Irish - were arrested and bailed, and a decision on whether to charge them will be made after police have completed their investigations. It is believed it would be the first instance of courtside hooliganism in Wimbledons 133-year-old history.Hanescu, who was fined 15,000 (10,000) yesterday, spat towards the crowd and walked off court when he was leading Daniel Brands, of Germany, 3-0 in the fifth set on Friday. Hanescu apologised in a statement yesterday, saying: "I lost my control briefly in the fifth set after another insult from someone in the crowd. I should never have done that but I am human and I made a mistake."A statement by the All England Club said: "Following a review, Victor Hanescu has been fined 7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct and a further 7,500 for not using best efforts at the conclusion of the match. No further comment will be made by the referee or the chair umpire." Hanescu could yet be charged by police with common assault if it is found he did spit and hit a member of the public. The four young men were in a seated area of the court when they allegedly began abusing Hanescu. He complained to the umpire and became frustrated when the group were allowed to continue their tirade. After being ejected by stewards, they watched from the standing area above the court where their heckling continued. One witness said: "He was receiving treatment [for a leg problem] and there were four guys standing on the walkway high up and they started getting personal, calling him a loser and weak."That was just after hed finished his treatment and was waiting to serve, and that really rattled him because he dropped the ball. The whole crowd gasped because everybody felt it was wrong. You could see the guys had been drinking."The match continued until Hanescu reached boiling point. The witness said: "Just a few minutes later there was another incident. He was serving again and something happened - I didnt hear it, but thats when he turned to a different section of the crowd. He began to shout. He looked really, really angry."He started to walk towards the crowd and then he shouted: Fuck you. And I could see this big bit of spit fly out of his mouth towards the crowd. I saw it clear as day, sort of looping up into the air."An American guy stood up and said: What are you doing? You cant spit at the crowd!"Then he continued to serve and hit his balls long to get his game over. He just walked up, shook his opponents hand and walked off. It was unbelievable."WimbledonTennisJamie Jackson guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Commonwealth Games 2010: England archers deny slur against official
Indian coach alleges he was sworn at English archers unhappy with crowd noiseEnglands archery team have denied an accusation that one of their officials insulted the Indian head coach after the womens recurve final at the Commonwealth Games here yesterday. England lost by one point after an extremely fractious contest in which the excitable home crowd made a lot of noise.Indias head coach, Limba Ram, said that after the match was over he had approached an English team official to shake hands, but was told to "fuck off". Ram was unable to identify the man who had insulted him. Ram was gracious enough to shrug the slight off."Following an internal team investigation, there is no indication that an English official was involved in yesterdays alleged rudeness to an Indian official at the archery venue," read a statement from the England team. "As an England team we have all worked hard with our Indian hosts to make these Games successful and to respect each others cultures. We would ask, of course, that athletes are respected when they are competing in the spirit of fair play in sport."The English team were upset by the noise made by the partisan crowd. England had held the lead going into the last round, but said they were disturbed by the rowdy spectators. "I was nervous," said Amy Oliver. "The crowd was not good. They were pretty loud and it was not good sportsmanship for archery.""Obviously it was a difficult way to finish," said Alison Williamson, who shot last. "This is not a typical archery crowd but were not making any excuses because we shoot as a team. I liken it to golf, though. You dont get people clapping and shouting when someone is teeing off."Archerys governing body has since issued a statement calling for the spectators at the Games to show a sense of "fair play".Commonwealth Games 2010Andy Bull guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
