Hansen apology for saying coloured
Match of the Day pundit was discussing racism in football Hansens comments caused a backlash on TwitterAlan Hansen has "unreservedly" apologised for twice using the word "coloured" to describe black footballers on Match of the Day on Wednesday evening when discussing the current John Terry and Luis Suarez racism cases.Hansen, 56, the shows long-time pundit, said: "I unreservedly apologise for any offence caused - this was never my intention and I deeply regret the use of the word."Employing the term had put Hansen at the centre of an online backlash after he said: "I think theres a lot of coloured players in all the major teams and there are lots of coloured players who are probably the best in the Premier League. If you look at 25 or 30 years ago it was probably in a bad way - not as bad as some of the other nations on the continent - but certainly there is always, always room for improvement."His comments caused a backlash on Twitter. The former Tottenham player Rohan Ricketts, now with Shamrock Rovers, tweeted: "Is this Alan Hansen guy taking the f****** piss?? Im not coloured??? He is part of the problem when using that word. We are BLACK Alan! [sic]."He added: "Alan Hansen is more coloured than a black person. But still we would not call him or another white man coloured." According to the Sun, the former England international Stan Collymore said: "Coloured? What colour would that be? Blue? Green? Orange?"BBCJamie Jackson guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Hartley demands England backlash
Hooker and try-scorer: Valiant defeats are not enough Tindall says: Well have to go out and beat the WallabiesDylan Hartley has warned Australia to expect a backlash after Englands defeat by New Zealand. The Rotorua-born hooker, whose arrival as a 50th-minute replacement for Steve Thompson sparked Englands second-half fightback against the All Blacks on Saturday, found little consolation in defeat. He said his side would have to cut out the errors when they play at Twickenham against the Wallabies next Saturday."The team is quite hurt at the moment," he said. "Valiant defeats are not good enough. Yes, we can stress plenty of positives but it is not enough. You cant put the All Blacks on a pedestal. I know, coming from a club environment, about the importance of winning and the confidence that its brings to a side."It was good to score a try but I didnt really feel like celebrating. The game was there to be won but the All Blacks are good at closing matches out. They were a lot more clinical than us. England seem to perform when their backs are against the wall and after not coming away with a result here, next week is vital."Mike Tindall, one of three survivors from the England team that beat the All Blacks here in 2002 and went on to win the World Cup a year later, agreed that little errors had cost England, particularly in a calamitous first quarter."Everyone was pretty deflated in the dressing room," he said. "We can take heart from the way we went at them but there was a sense of frustration and a feeling that we could have done better. We were annoyed at the silly little errors. Well be disappointed all week, well let it sink in and then well have to go out and beat the Wallabies."The All Blacks patchy second-half display will probide little consolation for Scotland, Ireland and Wales, who will try to prevent another grand-slam tour. New Zealand play at Murrayfield next Saturday."Theres a lot of frustration in the dressing room," said New Zealands captain, Richie McCaw. "We didnt get the little things you do under pressure quite right and perhaps we should have sometimes taken more conservative options."And if the head coach Graham Henrys assessment that England "play well in patches" sounded like faint praise - that was because it was.England rugby union teamNew Zealand rugby union teamAutumn internationalsRugby unionIan Malin guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Semenya faces backlash after Berlin win
Jemma Simpson breaks silence on Caster Semenya Opponent says field are literally running against a manCaster Semenya will have to contend with a growing backlash from her beaten opponents, with the British runner Jemma Simpson the latest to raise her concerns while another opponent said the field were "literally running against a man".Simpson, who finished fourth as Semenya stormed to victory in the 800m in Berlin last night, admitted her frustration at competing against the South African teenager.Semenya was competing in her third competitive 800m race since she was cleared to resume competition, following an 11 month absence from the sport when she had been ordered to undergo gender verification tests. But she showed little sign of rustiness, or of any side effects from a reported course of hormone treatment, as she bridged a gap of 20 metres on the home straight to defeat the American Christin Wurth-Thomas in 1min 59.90 secs."Its obviously a human rights issue but human rights affect everyone in the race, not just one person," Simpson told the Telegraph. "The rest of the field just gets ignored. No way is it a personal issue but its a debate about what is right and fair for everyone. Its a really tough subject and a lot of people are very careful about what they say. You have to be."You have to be diplomatic and keep your opinions to yourself but sometimes it is so frustrating."Canadas Diane Cummins, who was eighth in Sundays race, was less guarded."As athletes we feel frustrated because everyone is allowed to give their opinion except us," Cummins said. "If we give an honest opinion, were either seen as bad sports or were not happy because were being beaten."But thats not the case. Jemma and I have been beaten tons of times by athletes who we feel are doing it in the realm of what is considered female."Unfortunately for Caster, shes grown up in an environment that is complicated not just for her but for human science. Basically, is she man, is she lady? What constitutes male, what constitutes female?""Even if she is a female, shes on the very fringe of the normal athlete female biological composition from what I understand of hormone testing. So, from that perspective, most of us just feel that we are literally running against a man."Cummins added: "It is certainly frustrating to be running against someone who seems to be doing it effortlessly. We all believe that Caster Semenya, pushed to her full potential, could break the world record."Thats 1.53, and thats what college guys are running. From that perspective, shes far superior to any female 800m runner weve ever had."Caster SemenyaAthleticsJames Callow guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Ernie Els hits back at critics of Wentworth redesign
South African describes critics as a bunch of spoiled golfers and accuses them of sticking the knife inErnie Els ended his miserable week at Wentworth by accusing those players who criticised his efforts in remodelling the West course, site of the BMW Championship, of "sticking the knife in" and described them as a bunch of spoiled golfers. "There is going to be criticism with any new design but I really wasnt expecting the backlash I got. I dont think anybody deserved it," the South African, below, said after completing his final round. "If they had criticisms they couldve handled it differently. Thats the sad part of the week - a lot of the guys Ive known for a long time came out and basically put the knife in. I dont really appreciate that." Bent hands in transfer request with view to 18m Villa move
Striker wants to leave Sunderland amid interest from Villa Villa manager Gerard Houllier desperate to strengthen sideDarren Bent has handed in a transfer request at Sunderland after Aston Villa reportedly tabled a bid of 18m for the striker. Sunderland have so far confirmed only that the written request was received after yesterdays Wear-Tyne derby but they have not revealed whether it was accepted. It is believed the bid of 18m could rise to as much as 24m. That would be a club record fee for Villa and would also represent a big coup for Gerard Houllier, as the embattled manager desperately tries to strengthen his side. They are fourth from bottom in the Premier League, outside of the relegation zone only by virtue of goals scored. But the move could see Sunderland, currently sixth in the table and surprise contenders for a European spot, facing a fans backlash for letting the 26-year-old England international depart.Bent has scored 36 goals in 62 games since joining the club in a 10m deal from Tottenham Hotspur in 2009 and has netted 11 times this season.SunderlandAston VillaTransfer window guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Gordon Taylor says crowd abuse could deter complaints about racism
Rio Ferdinand booed during 3-3 draw at Chelsea Taylor backs FA stripping Terry of England captaincyThe players union chief executive, Gordon Taylor, fears the recent crowd abuse suffered by Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand could deter footballers from complaining about racial discrimination. The Manchester United defender Evra was taunted by Liverpool fans last week after an independent inquiry ruled he had previously been racially abused by the Anfield clubs Luis Suarez, while his team-mate Rio Ferdinand was also a target for some sections of the Chelsea home support on Sunday.Ferdinand is the brother of the QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, who it is alleged was racially abused by Chelsea captain John Terry last October. Terry, who denies the charge, is due to stand trial over the matter in July.Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, said: "The big thing is with the likes of Patrice Evra - he has become a victim because he has made a complaint."The last thing we want is black players to feel there is no point making a complaint because they will then suffer a backlash. It is like that with a lot of other issues on equality, like homophobia."There is a fear that anyone who comes out and makes a complaint will receive this backlash and it puts off anyone else. People have got to be strong and believe what they are doing is right and stand up against racism."Taylor is saddened that after many years of strong campaigning to eradicate racism from the British game, the matter has resurfaced this season. However, he believes there is one crucial difference from the 1970s and 1980s. Taylor said: "There is an element of abuse now coming into crowds and it is not always easy to control that. There has been a backward step of late."But people are saying it is a return to the bad old days and I dont believe that. In the bad old days there would not have been the level of discussion that there is now."There are some excellent campaigns and I dont want people to think all the progress we have made in the last two decades has been wiped out. I dont want any black players to feel that has all been for nothing."The very fact it is so high up the agenda and taken as seriously now is a situation that just wasnt the case many years ago. This has just reinforced the message that we have got to keep working at the campaigns. It is an education process. It is something we believe in at the PFA and will continue to press onwards with. It is bigger than any player or club or the game itself."The game at Stamford Bridge came after the Chelsea skipper Terry was stripped of the England captaincy by the Football Association because of his pending trial. The FA felt the matter could overshadow the build-up to Euro 2012 but stressed they were not prejudging the outcome of the trial.Taylor believes the FA took the correct decision and feels comments from manager Fabio Capello, saying he disagrees, are unhelpful. He said: "If the captain, who has to do main press conferences, was forever going to be put under questioning as to whether he should be captain with that charge against him, that would take away the issue from football."This was an elephant in the room that wasnt going to go away and I felt the FA tried to negotiate through that moral maze by deciding to say he wouldnt be captain."In order to take the pressure off that particular issue and concentrate on football, from that point of view, we respected that decision. It is just unfortunate the manager doesnt seem to be on board and understand the reasons why that was done."Rio FerdinandJohn TerryRace issues guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Hit F5 or use the autorefresh tool for the latest updates and email funnies or otherwise to john.ashdownguardian.co.ukJohn will be here from 1pm-ish so until then, heres some squad sheet action:With Chelsea turning their attention to the FA Cup, Manchester United can go back to the top of the Premier League by winning at Blackburn, but they are without the talismanic Wayne Rooney, who aggravated his ankle injury against Bayern Munich in midweek.Sam Allardyce and company may fancy their chances against opponents diminished by the absence of their principal goalscorer, and Rovers are strengthened by the return of their captain, Ryan Nelsen. But United are in wounded beast mode after losing pole position in the title race and their place in Europe in the space of five days, and a backlash would hardly be a surprise. Arsene Wenger warns of backlash if Andy Carroll skips Under-21 duty
Wenger upset at Jack Wilsheres expected England U21 call-up Cesc Fabregas told to deliver trophies with ArsenalArsene Wenger has warned Fabio Capello and Stuart Pearce to expect a backlash if Andy Carroll were to be stood down from the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship next month. The Arsenal manager is upset that Jack Wilshere looks set to be named in Pearces 23-man squad for the finals in Denmark, which take place between 11 and 25 June, despite his having graduated to Capellos senior team. Wilshere, who has made 54 appearances for club and country at all levels this season, is expected to play for Capellos side in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland on 4 June.Wenger has warned of the dangers of burnout but his ire would deepen if Liverpool succeeded in withdrawing Carroll from the squad, on the basis that the knee problem that has held him back in recent weeks would benefit from a summer of rest. Carroll, the 35m January signing from Newcastle United, who is also a full international, has made 31 appearances this season.Liverpool are lobbying for Carroll to be excused from the tournament in Denmark and, amid the toing and froing, the Football Association was forced to say Pearces final squad announcement would not be until next Monday, after the final round of Premier League fixtures. The governing body had hoped to publish the list of names on Thursday."Pearce will be concerned to leave Carroll behind," Wenger said, "and I dont think he will do it because that is opening the doors for any other complaints behind that. Players react like: If he doesnt go, why do I go? That could be a dangerous game to leave Carroll behind. It could create many other problems. I would not be the first on the phone but there would be no logic in the attitude of the selection."I could understand if Carroll doesnt go for injury problems but for fatigue problems ... it would be more difficult to convince people in England that he is more tired than Jack Wilshere."Wenger announced on Thursday morning that he knew that Wilshere was in Pearces squad and, although he continues to hope that there could be a change of heart, prompted by his pressure, he intends to plan for the beginning of next season without the 19-year-old.In an attempt to guard against burnout, he will give Wilshere four weeks of complete rest, calculated from the day that the Under-21s exit the Championship, and he said the midfielder would then need at least three weeks of pre-season work before he could consider selecting him.The semi-finals in Denmark are scheduled for 22 June; the final for 25 June and the new Premier League season will kick-off on 13 August. Wenger said the senior England team "know Jack will not be available for the friendly" on 10 August against Holland at Wembley. "Jack will be very unlikely to start the season for us," said Wenger, who feels that the decision to take Wilshere to Denmark is a "risk for Jacks health".Wenger, meanwhile, has told Cesc Fabregas that Arsenals trophy-free season does not offer him the excuse to leave for Barcelona, the midfielders former club and perennial suitors. "What guarantees you that if you go somewhere else, you win trophies?" Wenger said. "I believe that the biggest pride for a captain is to be committed to his club and deliver trophies with his team."A player who changes clubs every time when he is frustrated or when he does not win a trophy goes nowhere. I believe that the quality of a sports life is to be committed to your club and not just move out when it doesnt go as well as expected."I expect Cesc to be here. We will fight very hard to keep him here. You have always to fight when you have a player of that quality. You have always to fight to keep the players, of course."England Under-21sArsene WengerArsenalAndy CarrollLiverpoolDavid Hytner guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

The day the series came back to life
Australias press salutes the second-day hero Mitchell Johnson Astonishing transformation of match and bowlerHaving gone for the jugular in the last few weeks, with Mitchell Johnson receiving some of the most venemous ire, the Australian press were forced to turn the tables as quickly as the Test itself had done after day two at the Waca."Back from the Ashes" roared the Sydney Morning Herald headline. "Johnson answers call in his countrys hour of need".Peter Roebuck in the Sydney Morning Herald"It was the day the series came back to life. It was the day Test cricket regained its reputation as a relentless, ruthless struggle for supremacy. It was the day Australia rejected the meek in favour of the mongrel. It was the day Australia secured a strong position and almost threw it away. Most of all, it was the day a tall, fragile and hitherto wayward speedster convinced England that he was no mere myth.""It had been an astonishing transformation of match and bowler. Previously incompetent, Johnson was irresistible. Australias strategy of withdrawing him from the front line and nursing him through his troubles had proved correct. In hindsight it was a gutsy decision taken in full knowledge of the backlash it was bound to provoke."More to followThe AshesEngland cricket teamAustralia cricket teamCricketMitchell Johnson guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]
