aberdeen board still to decide future of the manager Mark McGhee
Directors have met twice since loss to Inverness aberdeen due at Rangers on SaturdayThe aberdeen board is yet to reach consensus on the future of its beleaguered manager, Mark McGhee, with financial matters featuring prominently in talks surrounding his possible sacking.aberdeen lost 9-0 to Celtic on Saturday and McGhees position is believed to be in peril after the team also failed to beat Inverness last night. The visitors managed a 2-1 win at Pittodrie, but the board meetings after that game and again today have thus far failed to resolve his situation. In a tight financial climate, aberdeen had paid 250,000 compensation to Motherwell for McGhees services in June of last year. It is believed a further 400,000 would be due between the manager and his two assistants if they are sacked. aberdeens next match is at Rangers on Saturday.aberdeenScottish Premier LeagueEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Brown in frame to take over at aberdeen
Brown has impressed while in charge at Motherwell May succeed Mark McGhee, his Fir Park predecessorThe Motherwell and former Scotland manager Craig Brown has tonight emerged as a leading candidate to take over the vacant position at aberdeen.Brown, who operates without a contract at Fir Park, has gained widespread plaudits for his work at Motherwell, a post he inherited from Mark McGhee, who was sacked by aberdeen last week.Billy Stark and John Hughes were the earlier favourites to replace McGhee but Brown could be seen as a safer choice by the Pittodrie board. Brown, the last man to guide Scotland to a major international tournament, has been frustrated by budgetary constraints at Motherwell. A key issue would be whether Brown would be willing to take on the significant task of reviving aberdeens ailing fortunes at the veteran stage of his career.Brown would, however, be amenable to the return of Jim Leighton to aberdeen; the clubs legendary goalkeeper was jettisoned by McGhee. Stark and Leighton also have close links.Brown was unavailable for comment tonight and therefore unable to confirm or deny that he held talks with the aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne in Glasgow. aberdeen, who sit second bottom of the Scottish Premier League, are scheduled to meet Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday.aberdeenMotherwellEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Brown rejects aberdeen job after talks
Former Scotland manager will not replace Mark McGhee Brown and assistant Archie Knox met aberdeen officialsThe Motherwell manager, Craig Brown, has turned down the opportunity to be considered for the managerial vacancy at aberdeen after meeting with the clubs officials. The former Scotland coach and his assistant Archie Knox had been linked with the Pittodrie post, made vacant by Mark McGhees departure last week.Motherwells chief executive, Leeann Dempster, said: "Given the fantastic on-field success in 2010, it is not surprising that other clubs are taking an interest in our management team."With that in mind, we can confirm that representatives from aberdeen Football Club met briefly with both Craig Brown and Archie Knox yesterday afternoon. However, both have decided to reject any approach and reiterated their commitment to Motherwell Football Club."Brown and Knox took charge at Fir Park 12 months ago following the departure of Jim Gannon and led the club to fifth place in the Premier League. aberdeen will now continue their search, with the Scotland Under-21 manager, Billy Stark, and the former Hibernian manager John Hughes among the favourites for the vacancy.Motherwellaberdeen guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Paul Hartley double steers aberdeen into CIS Cup semi-finals
aberdeen seal victory thanks to late Hartley strike Gow opens Motherwell account in win over Dundee UnitedTwo goals from Paul Hartley gave aberdeen a dramatic late win over First Division Falkirk at Pittodrie Stadium to put them into the semi-finals of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.The visitors broke the deadlock when the French defender Mehdi Khalis nodded home Kallum Higginbothams back-post corner after 33 minutes, although aberdeen felt they should have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Rory McArdle in the build-up to the set-piece.However Hartley equalised after 64 minutes to ensure the match went the distance when he headed Darren Mackies inviting cross past Robert Olejnik in the Falkirk goal. And when Chris Maguire was brought down in the area by Khalis in the third minute of injury time, Hartley stepped up to send Olejnik the wrong way.aberdeen will be joined in the final four by Motherwell who beat Dundee United 1-0 thanks to Alan Gows first goal for the club.Gow turned and volleyed home from close range for his first goal for Motherwell after United failed to deal with Tom Hateleys 86th-minute corner. An extra half-hour had seemed inevitable after a scrappy second half but Gow produced a rare piece of quality to continue Craig Browns impressive reign as manager at Fir Park.aberdeenFalkirkDundee UnitedMotherwell guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen sack Mark McGhee and his managerial team
Six consecutive losses do for former Dons striker John Hughes and Paul Hartley early favouritesMark McGhee has been sacked as the manager of aberdeen after presiding over a disastrous start to the Scottish Premier League season. Only goal difference keeps the Pittodrie team from the bottom of the division, with a run of six consecutive top-flight defeats sufficient to cost McGhee the job.The manager had earned a stay of execution after a 9-0 drubbing by Celtic last month. Yet Saturdays 2-0 loss at Kilmarnock has proved to be his final game. Compensation worth a total of 400,000 will be payable to McGhee, his assistant Scott Leitch and coach Colin Meldrum.aberdeen had paid 250,000 to get McGhee from Motherwell last year but he proved merely the latest manager unable to revive the clubs fortunes. The former Hibernian manager John Hughes will be linked with the vacancy as will Paul Hartley, the club captain. Hartley may work in partnership with the Raith Rovers manager John McGlynn.aberdeenEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 0-1 Rangers | Scottish Premier League match report
Rangers secured only a second win at Pittodrie in eight visits and, with it, the potential for a morale-boosting weekend. With Celtic on Scottish Cup duty, Rangers can return to the summit of the Premier League with a victory over St Mirren on Saturday, although Walter Smiths side will have played a game more.Smith had cause to praise his 4m striker Nikica Jelavic last night. It was the former Rapid Vienna strikers superb goal which clinched the three points. Little over 11,000 were in attendance to see it, an indicator of aberdeens present status.aberdeen had passed up two fine chances to open the scoring before Rangers did exactly that. Sone Aluko was the hosts culprit on both occasions, firstly missing the ball entirely when only six yards out then blazing wildly over from a similar position.Amid an entertaining opening, Jelavic proved more potent. The Croatian striker brilliantly teed the ball up before beating Jamie Langfield with a 16-yard overhead kick. It was his 11th SPL goal in only 13 starts.Rangers had a subsequent penalty claim waved away, rightly it seemed, as Steven Davis tumbled under a Sone Aluko challenge. aberdeen, ruing both their wastefulness and the brilliance of Jelavic, were unable to trouble the makeshift Rangers defence during the rest of the first half.aberdeen did, though, look more likely after the interval. Chris Maguire should have levelled the score when clean through on goal, and Josh Magennis saw a close-range header held by the Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor. And Scott Vernon failed to bundle the ball over the Rangers line with 15 minutes to play. aberdeen can only hope they have saved their cutting edge for a meeting with the other half of the Old Firm in Sundays semi-final.Scottish Premier LeagueaberdeenRangersEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 0-4 Celtic | Scottish Cup semi-final match report
For 45 minutes, this was an almighty struggle for Celtic. No doubt reeling from some half-time truths from their manager, Neil Lennon, and benefiting as aberdeens early reduction to 10 men finally told, the Parkhead club improved markedly thereafter.Lennons dream of a double during this, his first full season in charge, remains alive. Celtic will meet Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final on 21 May.aberdeen, who were thumped by the same opponents in this seasons League Cup semi-final, had their hopes of a final appearance fatally undermined by the 18th-minute dismissal of Andrew Considine. The centre-half clipped Gary Hooper as he bore down on goal; Anthony Stokes saw his resultant penalty beaten away by Jamie Langfield but Celtics numerical advantage always looked likely to be decisive.Still, aberdeen had held their own during that opening period. Chris Maguire headed their best opportunity at Fraser Forster while, aside from the spot-kick, Stokes had been denied at close, one-on-one range by Langfield.aberdeens goalkeeper was deceived by the Celtic opener. Charlie Mulgrew, a former aberdeen player, curled in a free-kick that was intended as a cross for Stokes. Not only did the striker fail to connect with a header, the bounce of the ball was sufficient to beat Langfield for the first time in the afternoon.aberdeen lacked the resource and belief to recover. They had watched a goal from Maguire chalked off for offside only seconds before Joe Ledley doubled the Celtic advantage. Stokes was the provider, with a cut-back that the Welshman stroked home from 12 yards.Celtics second penalty of the tie extended their aggregate advantage over aberdeen this season to 20-1. Derek Young conceded it, with a needless challenge on Stokes as he and the ball seemed to be running out of play. A change of taker prompted a change in result, Kris Commons slotting past Langfield from 12 yards. The substitute Shaun Maloney completed the scoring from close-range after build-up work from Scott Brown and the impressive Mark Wilson. aberdeens only source of solace is that they do not have to meet Celtic again during this campaign.Scottish CupaberdeenCelticEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 0-3 Celtic
Celtics ascent to peak performance could hardly have been more timely. Neil Lennons team have claimed 15 goals and conceded only one in their last five games. Their latest impressive showing swatted aside the challenge of aberdeen for a third time in 10 days.Even the Pittodrie clubs manager, Craig Brown, was deferential. "If I wasnt so biased, Id say it was a joy to watch," said Brown of Celtics display here.Lennons team now hold an eight-point league lead over Rangers and attention turns to Ibrox tomorrow night as Rangers use up one of three games in hand with the potentially tricky visit of Hearts. Celtic face their oldest foes on Scottish Cup business on Sunday, the first of three crucial Old Firm derbies within a six-week spell. "There is a confidence there, not arrogance but confidence," said the Celtic manager. "We are just asking questions [of Rangers] all the time. That is all we can do."The aberdeen defender Andrew Considine received a red card with 80 seconds played. Considine hauled back Scott Brown as he bore down on goal, though Anthony Stokess resultant penalty was superbly saved by Jamie Langfield. The aberdeen goalkeeper could do nothing about Gary Hoopers 11th SPL goal of the campaign. Celtics striker played a neat one-two with Stokes before dispatching a low finish to Langfields left. With 15 minutes left, Kris Commons corner was powerfully headed home at the near post by Mark Wilson, who claimed his first Celtic goal and celebrated a first Scotland call-up earlier in the day. Stokes then put the gloss on the away victory with an angled finish, having collected a Hooper pass. It was his eighth goal in six games.Scottish Premier LeagueaberdeenCelticEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Craig Browns move to aberdeen leaves Motherwell in a rage
Managers switch to Pittodrie is matter of gross discourtesy 70-year-olds first game in charge could be against former club aberdeen will unveil Craig Brown as their new manager on Monday morning, despite Motherwell asking the Pittodrie club to delay the 70-year-olds appointment until after the two teams meet next Saturday.Brown and his assistant Archie Knox resigned from their positions at Motherwell last night. They had been working without contracts at Fir Park but the move, made just hours after Brown and Knox verbally agreed to take over at aberdeen, prompted a furious response from Motherwell.Motherwell said: "We wish to make clear that as a board we believe that the conduct of the board of aberdeen in this matter has been wholly inappropriate and in clear breach of SPL rules, as well as basic courtesy. At no point did they inform us or seek our permission to speak to critical employees of our club and to seek to entice them to leave our employment."We realise the desperation they are feeling and the pressure they are under from their fans for their own performance as a board, but to go about their business in this way is a matter of gross discourtesy. It is also conduct which is beneath the integrity we would expect of a club of aberdeens stature. We have raised this matter with the SPL and will pursue the matter vigorously and by all means."John Boyle, the Motherwell chairman, added today that Browns appointment should be postponed for more than a week. Boyle said: "I think that it would be a sporting gesture for aberdeen, Craig and Archie to wait until we play them a week on Saturday before taking up their new position."By doing that it would help Motherwell, and we would feel things are being done in a slightly better manner than they have been in the last couple of days." Yet aberdeen sources said they have no intention of agreeing to such a proposal.Sanctions against the club from the league are unlikely given Browns employment status before his resignation. SPL rules directly point to a "written contract of employment" in relation to punishment for tapping up.This afternoon, Brown was finalising a deal with his lawyer and the aberdeen board which is expected to increase the former Scotland managers salary markedly, to about 150,000. He had initially harboured reservations about moving to another SPL side, but was talked round after a second set of discussions with the aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne.Brown had been frustrated by budgetary constraints at Motherwell, whom he led into the Europa Leagues qualifying stage after a fine end to last season.Brown and Knox will watch aberdeens visit to Hearts tomorrow from Tynecastles main stand before beginning the job of reviving their new clubs ailing fortunes at the start of the week. Only goal difference separates aberdeen from Hamilton at the foot of Scotlands top flight.Brown follows the sacked Mark McGhee into the managers post at Pittodrie; aberdeen paid 250,000 to coax McGhee from Motherwell in the summer of 2009. Brown said of his move: "Its being a bit selfish, but when someone offers you a better job I think its understandable that we would be tempted."It is improbable that McGhee will return to Motherwell. Gordon Chisholm, who was sacked by Dundee after the First Division club entered administration this season, is the early favourite to succeed Brown. Motherwell are not scheduled to have a game until Tuesday night, when Hearts visit Fir Park.aberdeenMotherwellEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 0-4 Celtic | Scottish FA Cup semi-final match report
After Celtics manager, Neil Lennon, had watched his side ease past aberdeen into the Scottish Cup final he welcomed an unexpected olive branch offered towards himself and the club by the president of the Scottish Football Association.Lennon and Celtic have been engaged in what has seemed like open warfare with the SFA this season but the president, George Peat, who previously described Celtic as "tiresome", used his semi-final programme notes to support Lennon. The manager has been exposed to security threats recently and Peat said: "I admire Neils courage in handling the abhorrent and contemptible behaviour to which he has been subjected and put on record my condemnation of such cowardly acts. Much has been made of the supposed SFA v Celtic war in the media but the reality is somewhat different."Lennon said: "I havent read it yet but I welcome those words. Thats very nice of him."aberdeen will be glad to see the back of Celtic. Five meetings between the sides this season have resulted in an aggregate win of 21-1 for the Glasgow club. aberdeen have also had three players dismissed during those encounters and their quest for a final place against Motherwell was doomed after 18 minutes when their defender Andy Considine was sent off for tripping the goal-bound Gary Hooper.Anthony Stokes had his penalty saved and Celtic did not break the deadlock until four minutes after the interval. Charlie Mulgrew deceived the goalkeeper Jamie Langfield with a free-kick - intended as a cross - for the opening goal.Joe Ledley doubled Celtics advantage with a calm finish from Stokess cutback. Only moments earlier aberdeen had a goal disallowed for offside.Kris Commons successfully reverted to penalty duty for Celtics second spotkick of the game. As the aberdeen manager Craig Brown rightly admitted, Derek Young had "foolishly conceded" the foul by tripping Stokes. The substitute Shaun Maloney then rounded off the scoring and endorsed their second-half superiority from close range after neat build-up play from Scott Brown and Mark Wilson.Celtics ghosts from a year ago, when Ross County surprisingly bundled them out of the Scottish Cup at the last-four stage, had been exorcised. For Craig Brown, who left Celtics final opponents Motherwell earlier this season, there will be an interest on 21 May. "No matter who they were playing, I would be supporting Motherwell," he said.CelticaberdeenScottish CupEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Rangers 2-0 aberdeen
Rangers could hardly have picked better opposition to get their Scottish Premier League campaign back on track. There was a time when both halves of the Old Firm feared visits from aberdeen; a time which is rightly now regarded as a distant age. On back-to-back Saturdays, the men from the north east have lost by an aggregate of 11-0 in Glasgow.aberdeen havent won at Ibrox since 1991, and have never looked less likely to do so. The second half of this game was utterly pedestrian.Rangers, then, found the perfect retort to Wednesday nights surprise 3-0 defeat to Hibernian. There was a hint, nonetheless, of what struggles may lie ahead for Walter Smith as he enters a crucial juncture of the campaign. The Rangers manager was only able to name six substitutes here, with five of them inexperienced youngsters. Smith, who has been told there are no resources with which to supplement his squad in January, must pray for no further injuries. With Kyle Lafferty, Nikica Jelavic, Sasa Papac, Maurice Edu and James Beattie missing because of various ailments - Richard Foster was also ineligible against his parent club - Smith found himself at bare bones.Mark McGhee may also need to rely on divine intervention. Amid somewhat farcical scenes, the aberdeen manager was eventually handed a stay of execution by the aberdeen directors on Thursday, after two days of boardroom talks.A game at Ibrox was never likely to make-or-break McGhees future, but there is little sign of the manager turning round aberdeens dismal form.Cynics would say matters of compensation, and the lack of an obvious replacement, are all that are keeping the beleaguered McGhee in his post. The lack of spirit displayed by aberdeen is more damaging for their manager than their shortage of ability. Allan McGregor, the Rangers goalkeeper, did not have a save to make during these 90 minutes.Jamie Langfield had already produced a fine stop from Lee McCullochs header by the time Kenny Miller opened the scoring. It was a goal of genuine quality, the Scotland striker cutely flicking home a Vladimir Weiss cross.Weiss himself doubled that advantage. The Manchester City loanee, who profited all afternoon from the space afforded to him by the visiting defence, scored with the aid of a deflection after aberdeen failed to clear a Miller cut-back. That aberdeen generosity has become one of several worrying features under McGhees stewardship.Miller should have secured the points before half-time, but watched Langfield smartly save his penalty after Zander Diamond was adjudged to have hauled down Steven Whittaker.Matches between this pair seldom lack dig, on or off the field. aberdeens supporters had been unable to keep the peace during a minutes silence in respect of armistice weekend, a matter which triggered further hostility from the Ibrox legions. aberdeen maintain an impressive travelling support, considering their current, lowly standing in the SPL, but a moronic element remains. At least the visiting contingent didnt have to endure the sort of second-half capitulation which aided Celtic in their 9-0 win seven days earlier. The defending SPL champions could take solace from aberdeens inability to edge back into proceedings. Only Hamiltons loss to Inverness prevented a new low for McGhees team; just one point keeps them from the foot of the table.Scottish Premier LeagueRangersaberdeenEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Craig Browns final career test at aberdeen is his toughest
Craig Brown is confident he can at least reverse two decades of decline at aberdeen and restore hope and prideHistory dictates that Craig Browns key wish for aberdeen might be overly ambitious. After all, a succession of managers have been unable to give the city a football team of which it can be proud.Browns hunger for his latest challenge is especially admirable given that this - although he objects to it being pointed out - is the twilight of his managerial career. An indicator of the size of his present task appeared as he watched aberdeen lose 5-0 to Hearts immediately after his appointment last season. Weeks earlier Celtic had thumped aberdeen 9-0. Progress has been apparent, if slow."There is no secret formula to motivate players," Brown says. "In aberdeen, as was the case with the Scottish national team, you appeal to the players better nature. The people in this city are so willing, so desperate to be pleased that you should feel a responsibility not to let them down."Thats what I try to transmit to the players. The support will be happy as long as they [the players] give everything. Guys like Jim Leighton, Willie Miller and Alex Ferguson are treated as Gods up here and rightly so. In Glasgow, only one half of the city will love you."Yet the decline of aberdeen, and the citys falling out of love with its once dominant football team, has been one of the Scottish games major sob stories of the past two decades. Attendances have diminished at Pittodrie amid frustration at an inability to compete at the upper echelons of the Premier League. A series of embarrassing cup results have hardly helped."This is a proper football club, in every sense," Brown insists. "It has been in the doldrums, so there is a major task to get its credibility back."A section of the aberdeen support will blame the board of directors and the majority shareholder, Stewart Milne, for the teams decline. That opinion is not shared by the manager."I understand why fans would look at the individual wealth of board members and ask why that money isnt being ploughed into the football club," Brown adds. "But the directors have been fantastic to me. Everything I have wanted, they have given me."We operate within a budget, of course, but the directors have not imposed rigidity. I needed a new goalkeeper over the summer and a little bit of extra help was given for that to happen, for example."That goalkeeper, David Gonzalez, arrived on loan from Manchester City. It would be a surprise if Browns summer transfer moves do not revive aberdeens fortunes, at least marginally. Chris Clark has returned to the club from Plymouth Argyle while Robert Milsom, Isaac Osbourne and Youl Mawene are all capable of flourishing in the SPL.The aberdeen that Brown inherited from Mark McGhee lacked full-backs and the overall ability which the Motherwell team he left behind could lay claim to.The former Scotland manager is still seeking another attacking player after the departures of Chris Maguire and Sone Aluko. Generally, though, he is content. "Rangers have more money than us and they are finding it difficult to recruit," says Brown of that forward hunt. The other half of the Old Firm visit the north east on Sunday. Celtic have played four friendly matches since defeating Hibernian at Easter Road in their opening league fixture; aberdeen stumbled to defeat at St Mirren after a scoreless draw with St Johnstone on the opening day.The four players aberdeen missed in Paisley are unlikely to return this weekend."If we are at full strength, we are a match for anybody," Brown says. "Against Celtic, that might not be the case so it will be a very difficult assignment."We played confidently and assuredly in the St Johnstone game and when Villarreal came here for a friendly. We should have won both games. Then we went to St Mirren and didnt do ourselves justice."But Im an optimist. I took Scotland into a World Cup game with Brazil believing we could win."Optimism is the very thing that has been sadly lacking in aberdeen. Browns final managerial challenge continues to be his most testing.aberdeenScottish Premier LeagueEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 2-3 Rangers
Before today one had to go back to December 2006 to find the last time Rangers had won in aberdeen. Within half an hour of this encounter that record looked like being extended. It took an impressive Rangers comeback, triggered by the on-form Kenny Miller, to maintain their winning start to the season. In what is already a two-horse race, Rangers lead Celtic at the summit on goals scored.Walter Smiths wait for a Pittodrie victory during this, his second spell in charge of Rangers, has obviously troubled him. Smith believes aberdeen raise their game against Rangers in a manner not replicated in the north-east teams showings against the rest of the league. After this game he could not resist a dig."They [aberdeen] seem to take great pleasure in saying to everybody that the only team they want to beat is Rangers," Smith said. "Im not like that. I want us to beat everybody."Smith reserved further words for the aberdeen support. "An innocuous foul is like a crime against humanity up here. Theres all kinds of howling and hollering goes on. They should maybe save some of their shouting for Kilmarnock and Falkirk."Miller is enjoying an altogether different season to his old sparring partner, Kris Boyd. The latters departure from Rangers this summer prompted legitimate questions over who would fill a goals void. Boyd started Middlesbroughs latest defeat, to Watford, on Saturday among the substitutes and is likely to be dropped from the Scotland squad named on Thursday for upcoming matches against the Czech Republic and Spain.Miller, conversely, has notched 10 goals in Rangers first six SPL games. He is suddenly the one player neither club nor country can do without.Yet it was aberdeens front men who made the early running here. Chris Maguire played in Scott Vernon after 10 minutes, the well-travelled Englishman drawing Allan McGregor before supplying a cool finish. The hosts doubled their lead through Maguire, who beat David Weir to a fine Darren Mackie cross before prodding home from close range.By the admission of their manager, Mark McGhee, afterwards, aberdeen played an integral role in their subsequent downfall. Jerel Ifil lunged into a challenge on Vladimir Weiss, handing Rangers a penalty which Miller was never likely to waste given his current touch. The same player equalised seven minutes after the break. Steven Naismith and Steven Davis worked a fine move down the Rangers left, Miler rounding matters off with a first-time finish, high into the aberdeen net.A woeful aberdeen attempt to play for offside allowed Steven Naismith to saunter through the middle of their defence with his cut-back finding Nikica Jelavic, who secured Rangers victory, with a long-range Maguire shot aberdeens only reply of note thereafter. Worse was to come for Maguire who, in bundling over Naismith, earned a second yellow card of the afternoon and an early bath.Smiths only concern relates to the influential Davis. The Northern Ireland international limped off with a hamstring injury, which is serious enough to render him a doubt for Bursaspors Champions League visit to Ibrox on Wednesday.Man of the match Kenny Miller (Rangers)Scottish Premier LeagueaberdeenRangersEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Mark McGhee named manager of League Two strugglers Bristol Rovers
McGhee signs two-and-a-half year deal at Rovers Has been out of work since leaving aberdeen in 2010Mark McGhee has been named as the new manager of the League Two strugglers Bristol Rovers. The 54-year-old, who had spells in charge of Reading, Leicester, Wolves, Millwall and Brighton, has been out of management since leaving aberdeen in December 2010.McGhee, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, takes charge of a side that is currently 18th in the table, and succeeds Paul Buckle, who was sacked following a 2-0 defeat at Barnet at the start of January. The Rovers chairman, Nick Higgs, told the clubs website: "We are delighted to bring Mark to the club. We were very impressed with the quality of candidates for the position, but he was a cut above, he interviewed extremely well, and has a fantastic pedigree."Mark has a great track record, and has managed at the highest level in this country and in Scotland. Rangers 3-1 aberdeen
If it has been clear to even passive onlookers for months that Rangers are destined to successfully defend their Scottish Premier League title, this felt like the occasion that the Ibrox crowd firmly believed that triumph is imminent.Matches between Rangers and aberdeen seldom lack bite. Nonetheless, the level of celebration as Kyle Lafferty sauntered through the visiting defence before firing home Rangers second goal illustrated that this was a meaningful result. "Championees", for the first time, was the overwhelming cry from the masses. Some anxious moments followed Darren Mackies unlikely aberdeen goal but nobody could question the merits of this result. Kenny Millers close-range strike, 14 minutes from time after Danny Wilson headed a Steven Naismith corner into his path merely endorsed his sides dominance. In blunt statistical terms, Rangers are now just two wins from the title. aberdeen are not safe from the perils of relegation just yet, as they know all too well. This Rangers canter to the championship had brought its own recent troubles. Last midweeks thumping by St Johnstone, coupled with an unconvincing win over Hamilton on Saturday, hinted that complacency may be at work within Ibrox. This encounter marked Rangers opportunity to prove they could surge, rather than stumble, over the finishing line.aberdeens generally dismal form under the management of Mark McGhee is at odds with their recent showings against Rangers. Walter Smiths team had not scored against this opposition in two meetings this season, aberdeen inflicting one of only two SPL losses for Rangers in this campaign last November. Smiths response to what constitutes a goal drought for the prolific Kris Boyd - he had gone five games without a goal - was to drop the striker to among Rangers substitutes here.Boyd, like the rest of the home contingent, could only applaud as Steven Davis sent Rangers in front. The midfielder, who has proved himself one of the finest performers in Scottish football, answered criticism that his talent is not fully replicated in goal-scoring with a superb, curling finish from 25 yards. The visitors reply for the remainder of the first half was not so much lame, as non-existent.The men from the north improved marginally after the interval, without creating trouble for the Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor. The identity of Rangers second scorer was a surprise, as Lafferty has not had his troubles to seek this season amid a run of inauspicious form. His goal, planted into Jamie Langfields bottom right-hand corner after a 30-yard run, was a rare moment of brilliance.aberdeens immediate riposte to Laffertys intervention was more straightforward, the forward Mackie bundling over the line from close range after McGregor failed to cut out a Steven MacLean pass.Scottish Premier LeagueRangersaberdeenEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Craig Brown justifies his decision to leave Motherwell for aberdeen
Brown walked out on Motherwell last Thursday My conscience is totally clear, says aberdeen managerCraig Brown has been unveiled as the new aberdeen manager, claiming that no-one has any right to criticise his service to his previous club, Motherwell.Brown quit his Fir Park role on Thursday night, 24 hours after publicly reaffirming his commitment to the club in the wake of interest from the Dons. The 70-year-old had returned to Motherwell in December last year, initially as interim manager, and never signed a contract despite agreeing to stay for the long term. The former Scotland manager claims he had a verbal agreement that either party could end the relationship without compensation. The Motherwell chairman, John Boyle, has been angered by the manner of his departure, reporting aberdeen to the Scottish Premier League for approaching Brown without consent. But Brown, who began his professional coaching career at Fir Park as assistant manager to Willie McLean, insists he has no reason to feel guilty over his departure."I was at Motherwell twice, I have a very great affection for Motherwell Football Club," he said. "I was there in the 70s, fourth in the league and two semi-finals. I have a great affection for Motherwell and I hope its reciprocated. I dont see why it shouldnt be. The commitment I gave in the 70s and last year - we answered a call, we went to Motherwell and did our best, and weve answered a call here. I dont think it should be an issue."Although Motherwell have been highly critical of aberdeens conduct in the wake of their managers departure, Brown feels there is no suggestion from the Fir Park board that he acted improperly. The club released a lengthy statement saying they were "surprised and disappointed" by the decision of Brown to depart, along with his assistant, Archie Knox, adding that they had too much respect for the pair not to wish them well. The statement concluded that "loyalty is clearly all too rare in football".Brown said: "I have got to say to you that the statement from Motherwell Football Club has never at any time indicted me or Archie. They have thanked us, been complimentary."I read it carefully because had there been anything which implied there was a lack of integrity I would have been very incensed because that would have been unfair. To the credit of Motherwell, they never said one word that was insulting or derogatory about Archie or me."Brown, whose first match in charge comes against Motherwell at Pittodrie on Saturday, added: "I dont want to add fuel to the fire but what I will say quite honestly is my conscience is totally clear."Brown and Knox, who was assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson during aberdeens glory days in the 1980s, were given a stark reminder of the scale of their task when they watched their new team lose 5-0 at Hearts on Saturday to go bottom of the Premier League. But Brown feels his time in the international hotseat has prepared him well for meeting the expectations of the Dons fans."We add this to the various challenges Ive had throughout my career and it is a major one," Brown said. "With the Scottish team, you are accountable to the whole nation. But here the people in this area want to be proud of their team. Our objective quite simply is to make aberdeen proud of their team."Meanwhile, Brown has quickly moved to reinstall Jim Leighton as goalkeeping coach. The recently-sacked Mark McGhee had replaced his former aberdeen and Scotland team-mate with Colin Meldrum shortly after he made the journey from Fir Park to Pittodrie.aberdeenMotherwell guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Neil Cooper and Neil Simpson take temporary charge of aberdeen
Dons keen to appoint new manager as soon as possible We want to try to galvanise everybody says MillerNeil Cooper and Neil Simpson have been placed in temporary charge of the first team at aberdeen as the club begins the search for a successor to Mark McGhee.McGhee, along with his assistants Colin Meldrum and Scott Leitch, left Pittodrie yesterday after a sixth straight league defeat at Kilmarnock on Saturday left the Dons joint bottom of the Scottish Premier League. Cooper and Simpson will be supported in their role by the club captain, Paul Hartley. The aberdeen director of football, Willie Miller, said today: "Ive spoken to Neil Cooper and Neil Simpson. Neil, with Simmy assisting him, will take the first team. Theyve obviously got Paul Hartley there as a senior player in the dressing room and team captain and hell help in the communication side."The two Neils are very committed players in the past and very committed members of the staff and just want to do the best for the club."I think thats the most important thing at this moment in time - we want to try to galvanise everybody to be working for the benefit of the club and going in the right direction. Thats what we put in place in the short term."Miller is part of a sub-committee featuring the chairman, Stewart Milne, and the chief executive, Duncan Fraser, who will draw up a shortlist of managerial candidates to present to the board. They do not intend to rush the appointment of McGhees successor but have invited interested parties to put their name forward.Miller added on RedTV: "We dont want to put a time on it, but wed like to get it done as soon as possible. We have to go through the procedure of building up a shortlist of potential candidates and weve set up a little sub-committee to do that. Were looking for applicants, building up a list of potential candidates ourselves and well take that process through as quickly as we possibly can."McGhees departure came just a few weeks after he had been given a vote of confidence in the wake of the club-record 9-0 defeat to Celtic and a loss to Inverness. Miller said today it had been "time for a change".He added: "Marks worked hard over the period hes been at the club, but eventually, as at any club, results dictate the future of any manager. The decision was made by the board that we wanted to make the change at this moment in time to give us a bit of time to try to build up momentum and get some points."Wed like to thank Mark, Colin and Scott for their efforts, but it was time for a change and now were moving on to make that change."aberdeen guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Well complain after Dons poach Brown
aberdeen have behaved with gross discourtesy Craig Brown and assistant Archie Knox resignCraig Brown has quit as Motherwell manager little over 24 hours after pledging his continued allegiance to the club following an approach from aberdeen.Motherwell last night confirmed the resignation of both Brown and his assistant, Archie Knox, after they reopened talks with aberdeens chairman, Stewart Milne.Brown is now set to be named aberdeen manager in time for the Dons game against Hearts tomorrow.Motherwell have reported the Dons to the Scottish Premier League after they recruited their second successive manager from Fir Park, the previous one being the recently sacked Mark McGhee."We realise the desperation they are feeling and the pressure they are under from their fans for their own performance as a board but to go about their business in this way is a matter of gross discourtesy," the club said."We have raised this matter with the SPL and will pursue the matter vigorously and by all means."Motherwell said they had done everything possible to keep their management team, who have been in charge for less than year and were working without contracts despite the club announcing they had agreed 18-month deals early this year. And the clearly emotional author of the statement finished with a rallying cry for fans who have been stunned by the 70-year-olds departure to a team sitting six places and 13 points below Motherwell in the SPL."To all Motherwell fans everywhere, we ask for you to rally round the club as you always do and we will work together to keep punching above our weight and obtaining the success we all seek," it said."This club is bigger than any manager and for that matter any board. As fans we will always be the people who care most about this club for the long term. Loyalty is clearly all too rare in football but we know we have it in ourselves for the club we love. Motherwell is a special club from a special place as anyone touched by us knows well."Brown held brief and informal talks with Milne on Tuesday but Motherwell and their manager himself announced the following day that the approach had been rejected. But the former Scotland manager wavered at some point late on Wednesday night after another approach from Milne and quickly completed a U-turn.MotherwellaberdeenScottish Premier League guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

St Mirren 1-1 aberdeen | Scottish Cup quarter-finals match report
In knockout tournaments, being lucky as opposed to good is rather useful. There is no question aberdeen were the latter in earning Scottish Cup quarter-final salvation they barely deserved, courtesy of Rory McArdles last-minute goal at St Mirren Park. In illustrating how football can change in the blink of an eye, suddenly aberdeen are the favourites to progress to the last four as they head into a replay on Wednesday night.A year ago, Danny Lennon was guiding Cowdenbeath towards an ultimately successful promotion push from Scotlands Second Division. He was within seconds of taking St Mirren to a semi-final here, with wastefulness in front of goal as much to blame for the hosts failure to see out victory as poor defending in the dying moments.Michael Higdon and Craig Dargo were clean through on goal on separate occasions with St Mirren 1-0 ahead. Higdon tripped over the ball and Dargo took a poor enough touch to allow the aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield to intervene; those basic errors came back to haunt the hosts as McArdle popped up with an unlikely equaliser.St Mirren have displayed a damaging trait of conceding late goals throughout this campaign. "I am very, very disappointed," said Lennon. "With the opportunities that we had, the game should have been put beyond doubt."Craig Brown has steadied matters at aberdeen but performances such as this prove what work lies ahead for the veteran manager. Too many of aberdeens players lack the talent to return the club to where their support demand at the upper echelons of the Scottish game. A summer squad overhaul in the north-east is inevitable, even if the manager praised aberdeens mentality."I want to compliment the players on competing right to the end because all seemed to be lost," said Brown. "But I cant be particularly proud of the performance. The way we are playing, we wont win the cup but we can improve."There is a theory that the Scottish season should revert to the summer, thereby starting in March. On this evidence, such a notion is fatally flawed with snow and sleet falling in Paisley. The conditions were partly an excuse, then, for a dismal opening half in which the total of aberdeens attacking efforts was a Scott Vernon header which was blocked at the back post. St Mirren offered little more, a David van Zanten cross which narrowly evaded the home attackers the only threat provided. The second half more closely resembled a cup tie, with substitutions meaningfully shaping the flow of the game. Langfield saved smartly from the St Mirren replacements Kenny McLean and Higdon in the space of a few seconds before Higdon curled wide from 20 yards.Browns decision to remove Steven Smith from the aberdeen defence was as notable as the changes implemented by Lennon. With the full-back absent, St Mirren profited down their right flank.Dargos cross found Higdon for the opening goal, with the strikers pass across goal falling perfectly for Paul McGowan. The Celtic loanee tapped home from close rangeHigdon or Dargo should have settled the tie but their failure to do so left an opportunity which aberdeen gleefully took. McGowan was adjudged to have fouled Chris Maguire with a Paul Hartley free-kick not adequately defended by St Mirren. McArdle capitalised to keep alive aberdeens hopes of a second Hampden appearance this season.Scottish CupSt MirrenaberdeenEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 0-1 Celtic | Scottish Premier League match report
A hard-fought victory for Celtic was overshadowed by the likelihood of a long-term absence for Emilio Izaguirre. The Honduran full-back, Scotlands player of the year last season and rated at 10m amid admiring glances from England, suffered a broken right leg in the early stages at Pittodrie."It is a huge blow for us and the player," said Celtics manager Neil Lennon. "Its his fibula, its fractured. I dont know how long he will be out for, he is being assessed just now to see whether or not he requires surgery. If he does, it will be three months."The 25-year-old landed badly amid what was a legal challenge by the aberdeen midfielder Peter Pawlett, after 15 minutes. Lennon held his head in his hands when informed by his club doctor during the match about the diagnosis for Izaguirre."You can tell by the players reaction," Lennon said. "Emilio isnt the type to feign injury. The concern was immediate. We might have to look now for a left-back."Otherwise, Lennon could take comfort from the claiming of three points in a match where his team failed to reach anything like their best. That said, aberdeens lack of punch meant a scoreless draw always looked like the worst Celtic could take back to Glasgow."We made it nervous for ourselves," Lennon said. "We had so many chances but our decision making in the final third was poor. We tried to walk the ball into the net at times. Thats a bad habit to have."More encouraging for Lennon was the confident competitive debut of the former Cardiff defender Adam Matthews. A flurry of activity in front of the aberdeen goal immediately before the interval belied a poor first half. Celtics Gary Hooper watched an effort deflected over the crossbar, with Scott Vernons long-range attempt the closest the hosts came to breaking the deadlock.Celtic had a legitimate penalty claim denied when Hooper looked to be hauled to the ground by Andrew Considine. That incident paled into insignificance as Anthony Stokes provided the definitive intervention.Kris Commons, who otherwise endured an error-strewn afternoon, robbed Ricky Foster in starting the move which Stokes rounded off. After an interchange of passes between the pair, Stokes fired home Commons cutback for his second goal in as many league matches."We committed suicide with a careless error," said the aberdeen manager, Craig Brown of Fosters actions. "He [Foster] thought he was impeded. But he would do."There seemed little chance of an aberdeen revival, James Forrest and Georgios Samaras going close to doubling Celtics advantage. The Polish goalkeeper Grzegorz Sandomierski could arrive in Glasgow as early as Monday with Celtic closing in on a deal for the 21-year-old. "He is a goalie we like and someone with huge potential," Lennon said.Scottish Premier League 2011-12aberdeenCelticScottish Premier LeagueEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Celtic 9-0 aberdeen
Two hat-tricks, two red cards and three penalties. Add in a record SPL win, plus aberdeens heaviest defeat in their history, and you would need the space of a phone book to catalogue it all. With 25 minutes played, the dismal football on offer was the only talking point. You genuinely could not have made up what followed, especially in a 20-minute spell containing two penalties and the same number of sendings-off.So much for moving on from the recent spat between Celtic and officialdom. It was Gary Hooper, who claimed in midweek that there is some form of bias from referees against Celtic, who notched the games first hat-trick. Anthony Stokes, Hoopers strike partner, obviously felt left out and recorded his own three-goal salvo. Two fundamental points emerge. First, Celtic fully deserved their victory and dismantled an aberdeen team who have now lost their last dozen visits to Parkhead. Celtic played for more than a half with 10 men, but could have fielded seven such was the standard of opposition. There are barely enough adjectives to spell out how bad aberdeen were.Second, the key decisions of the referee, Alan Muir, appeared correct, thankfully for all concerned. Even the moaning which surrounded the dismissal of Celtics Thomas Rogne, in this anti-refereeing atmosphere, were half-hearted.Mark McGhee has more to worry about than the performance of match officials; aberdeens manager is clinging on to his post. McGhee was once a candidate to manage Celtic, but the odds now are strongly in favour of the aberdeen board dispensing with his services in the not too distant future. These 90 minutes alone were sacking material.McGhee was hardly helped by his captain, Paul Hartley. The vastly experienced midfielder should have known better than to punch a Ki Sung-yueng shot away from his own goal - more so because the goalkeeper Jamie Langfield was not exposed - in handing Celtic their first penalty. Hartley, once of these parts, was applauded off the pitch as he headed for his enforced early bath. Stokes, who has adapted seamlessly to life at Parkhead, despatched the penalty.Strangely, aberdeen could have been in front by that stage after Chris Maguire delayed a shot when sent through on goal, but they collapsed thereafter.Hooper scored his first after brushing aside Zander Diamonds meek challenge, before the same player slammed home from Niall McGinns cross. Rognes rugby tackle on Maguire prompted the opening halfs second red card and Langfield then hauled down Shaun Maloney, who did not, unlike Maguire, have a clear goalscoring opportunity, meaning the colour of card shown to the goalkeeper was rightly yellow. Stokes again scored from the spot.Henrik Larsson was a visitor to Celtic Parks main stand. Even when the Swede was in his green and white pomp, there were no league routs such as this.In the second half the aberdeen substitute Josh Magennis fired a diving header beyond his own goalkeeper, Hooper stooped to nod home at the back post and Joe Ledleys tame effort somehow slipped right through into the net.Stokes completed his hat-trick from a one-on-one position. Paddy McCourt rounded off the scoring, again with a penalty, after Maloney was tripped.McGhee earned a stern talking-to from the referee near the end and he must expect another one from his chairman, which might just cost him his job.CelticaberdeenScottish Premier LeagueEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 1-4 Celtic
Any lingering Hampden Park ghosts were exorcised by Celtic within 34 ruthless minutes. This venue housed Neil Lennons most harrowing occasion as the Celtic manager, Ross County inflicting a Scottish Cup semi-final defeat on them last season. But Celtics return to Hampden proved perfectly straightforward for Lennon.Kris Commons, Charlie Mulgrew, Anthony Stokes and Thomas Rogne had this League Cup semi-final settled 11 minutes before the interval. The prospect of an Old Firm final on 20 March remains, with Rangers facing Motherwell tomorrow for the right to meet Celtic. This tournament is generally regarded as the lesser of Scotlands two knockout competitions. Still, it has special value for Lennon as he looks to claim his first honour in management. Not even a dreadful playing surface could hamper Celtics touch. That pitch had triggered headshaking from Lennon before kick-off. The manager had little with which to concern himself thereafter. The meekness of what they were up against here must be taken into account, but Lennons desire to see his team display a clinical edge appears to be finally bearing fruit. Celtic are in fine fettle heading into a tantalising week that will see them face aberdeen again, away from home, on Tuesday before they head to Ibrox for a Scottish Cup meeting with Rangers. You would have thought aberdeen were beyond capitulations such as this. Celtic were competent and clinical in the opening period yet nowhere near as impressive as three days earlier, when they eased past Hearts.Lennons cause was therefore aided by how utterly abject the north-east side were, particularly in defence. aberdeen had lost 9-0 to Celtic in November but a subsequent change of manager has steadied things at Pittodrie. Craig Brown, who enjoyed a successful time at Hampden when in charge of the Scottish national team, could only look on in horror. Browns predecessor, Mark McGhee, would observe that mental fragility is not always wiped out by fresh management.Commonss desire to be known as a valuable Celtic player, rather than one who spurned Rangers to sign up at Parkhead, was aided by virtually his first touch in green and white. The debutant brilliantly chipped Jamie Langfield in the aberdeen goal with five minutes played; at that stage, though, there was little indication of what was to follow.Mulgrew, a former aberdeen player, nodded home at close range after Rogne had knocked a Commons corner into his path. Celtics third followed a similar pattern, Mulgrew lobbing to the back post with Rogne heading past Langfield. An act of blatant stupidity from Derek Young prompted goal No4 and an early exit for scores of aberdeens travelling contingent. Young handled a Stokes free-kick inside his own penalty area when there appeared no need whatsoever to do so. Celtics Irish striker maintained his recent impressive scoring run by slamming home from 12 yards. It would have been a sad indictment of Browns players if they had not summoned some sort of response after the break. Scott Vernon duly claimed a consolation goal with a header from Robert Milsoms searching free-kick.The departure of Rogne immediately after aberdeens goal, apparently because of injury, will hasten Celtics desire to sign a centre-back before the transfer window closes. The Norwegian, bizarrely given Lennons rapid recruitment of players, started the afternoon as the only fit Celtic player for that position. If aberdeen are as dismal on Tuesday, that said, the deployment of an opposition defence may be unnecessary.CIS Insurance CupaberdeenCelticEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Blackburn defend signing of Myles Anderson, the son of agent Jerome
20-year-old has made one substitute appearance for aberdeen Father had role in takeover of Blackburn by VenkysBlackburn Rovers have defended what is, on face value, the routine signing of a young player after it emerged Myles Anderson is the son of the agent Jerome Anderson.Anderson has made just a single appearance, as a substitute, since joining aberdeen as a free agent in January. The 20-year-old defender earlier had a similarly low-key spell at the League One club Leyton Orient.Nonetheless, Blackburn will hand Anderson a two-year deal this summer. The players father had an advisory role as the Venkys group took over the Premier League club last year, with Jerome Anderson still thought to be close to events at Ewood Park.Steve Kean, the Blackburn Rovers manager, stressed that Anderson will be signed for football reasons alone and that his late development is linked to the completion of his education."We feel that Myles Anderson is a player with great potential as a late developer," said Kean. "He could become something of a Chris Smalling who came through late in football and Myles has done the same because of his schooling. We think he has a lot of potential, but there was the opportunity for him to go to Scotland in January and we and he felt that would be a good experience for him."There was interest in him from a couple of Spanish clubs but he is our player and will be at our club full-time in July."Craig Brown, the aberdeen manager, had Anderson on trial during his time in charge of Motherwell. At that point, the player was training with but not signed by Blackburn. Browns assistant, Archie Knox, was previously on Blackburns coaching staff.Brown explained that he knew upon handing a short-term deal, on relatively low wages and as a back-up player, to Anderson at the turn of the year that the defender would move to Ewood Park in May."Steve Kean had said to me that, if he was handed the Blackburn job long-term, he would sign Myles Anderson," Brown said. The former Scotland manager added that he had been unaware who Andersons father was until the last 24 hours.Blackburn RoversEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Omar Daleys debut goal gives Motherwell 2-1 victory at aberdeen
Rangers draw 0-0 at home with St Johnstone Scott Robertson scores as Dundee United beat Hearts 1-0Rangers were held to a 0-0 draw by St Johnstone in their Scottish Premier League clash at Ibrox.Neither side were able to find the back of the net, with the stalemate allowing Celtic to close the gap on the SPL leaders to 10 points following their win in Inverness earlier in the day.Omar Daley marked his first Motherwell start with the winning goal as the Lanarkshire side won 2-1 at aberdeen. The Jamaica international shot home from 18 yards in the 53rd minute as Motherwell strengthened their grip on third place in the SPL.Scott Vernon had equalised four minutes after Michael Higdon headed the visitors into an early lead, but aberdeen rarely looked like equalising again.aberdeen brought Peter Pawlett on for Chris Clark but they could not break Motherwell down despite pushing them back at times. Chris Humphrey replaced Daley and gave the Steelmen a good outlet on the right wing to relieve the pressure and claim victory.Billy Browns bid to become Hibernian manager began with a 1-1 draw with his former club Kilmarnock at Easter Road.Following 23 years as assistant boss to Jim Jefferies, including two spells at Hearts, caretaker boss Brown was seeking to prove his credentials as long-term successor to Colin Calderwood. It was not an entirely convincing display as Manuel Pascali put the visitors in front after 36 minutes before half-time substitute Leigh Griffiths equalised after 50 minutes to earn Hibs a point.Scott Robertsons first goal in nearly three years ensured Dundee United beat Hearts 1-0 and added on-field misery to the Tynecastle sides off-field woes.Robertson dived to head in the only goal of the game in the 24th minute to capitalise on a pinpoint cross from home skipper Jon Daly.First-half goals from Kenny McLean and Nigel Hasselbaink helped St Mirren to a 2-1 victory over Dunfermline at St Mirren Park.Dunfermline midfielder Joe Cardle scored after 63 minutes to set up a nervous finish for the home side, but Danny Lennons men held out for the three points their play deserved. aberdeen chase success in Craig Browns final furlong
Club seeks return to halcyon days of the 80s after veteran manager takes over at PittodrieCraig Brown could be about to discover what two of his managerial predecessors already know. Terry Butcher and Mark McGhee learned that the grass wasnt greener at all after they parted company with Motherwell for troubled times in Sydney and aberdeen respectively. After leaving Fir Park on Friday, Browns attempt to reinvigorate the fortunes of aberdeen, who dispensed with McGhees services this month, begins in earnest on Monday . Without question, this is the toughest assignment of the septuagenarians apparently never-ending coaching career.aberdeen, as a city, has grown totally disenchanted with football and its hometown team, the result of disaster after disaster since the halcyon days presided over by Alex Ferguson. Some aspects of Browns club swap are semi-remarkable. First, that a 70-year-old could be in the midst of a furious tug-of-war between two top-flight outfits - Motherwell are still calling foul over the move - let alone be the man instantly identified by the aberdeen board as a cure-all for deep-running problems. Those with a sceptical approach could legitimately ask what Browns belated attractiveness says about the talent of younger Scottish coaches. Which isnt a slight on him; there was no other obvious candidate for this post.It is also striking that Brown spent five years away from football management before Motherwell turned to him last December. In that period, it simply seemed the former Scotland and Preston managers full-time working days were over.Nobody can question the outstanding work Brown carried out at Fir Park, and with meagre resources, but this return to prominence really does illustrate what a fickle business football can be. His performance in Lanarkshire is only part of the reason Motherwell are ill-advised to continue to whine about his "transfer". As he didnt have a written contract, Browns former club would have been swift enough to dispense with his services - and pay no compensation - had he turned out to be a flop.Browns viability to aberdeen is obvious. He is the steady hand required to ease seemingly permanent turmoil in the north-east. This is no long-term project, rather a move by the Pittodrie board to stabilise matters until the end of next season at least. It will surely represent Browns final management furlong, but, if successful, it could be the most satisfying. Yes, this is a man who guided his country to major tournaments, but in a period when the players available rendered that a perfectly reasonable target. As he showed at Motherwell, the veterans contacts in England mean loan forays are realistic and easily attainable; the Blackburn Rovers forward Nick Blackman has been the latest to make an instant impression in this SPL season. That eye for a gem was required given Motherwells budgetary constraints, with the clubs 1.2m playing staff fund from last season cut by 200,000 this time around. aberdeen are hardly renowned for splashing out on exorbitant wages, but have a capacity to virtually double the sums at Browns disposal. He will certainly need all the resources he can muster.Given that Scotland was paralysed by Arctic weather conditions over the past week, football was never going to escape. Nonetheless, the decision to postpone Celtics scheduled visit of Kilmarnock rightly baffled many. The decision was made 48 hours before a ball was due to be kicked at Parkhead, with conditions surrounding, rather than within, the stadium, cited as the key reason. On Friday, the temperature in Glasgow remained at a steady 8C as a meaningful thaw ensued. Kilmarnocks supporters hardly travel to Celtic Park in great numbers - and with good cause given that they havent won there for more than five decades. Those who do, have merely a short journey north.aberdeenMotherwellEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Sir Alex Ferguson rejected 1986 chance to become Arsenal manager
Scot hesitated over Arsenal job the summer before United offer Delay led to Sir Alex Ferguson losing the opportunitySir Alex Ferguson has revealed how the course of English football could have been changed - had he accepted an offer to manage Arsenal.Ferguson, then at aberdeen, was approached by the north London club as the potential successor to Don Howe in the summer of 1986. Ferguson was coaching Scotland at the World Cup in Mexico at that point and regards only a delay in his decision as putting an end to the move. The Manchester United manager has spoken for the first time about the affair in Rangers match programme for their Tuesday night meeting with Dundee United. The game marks Walter Smiths last at Ibrox as the Rangers manager; Ferguson wanted Smith to assist him had he accepted Arsenals advances."I was offered the Arsenal job and I wanted to take Walter with me," Ferguson said. "I had got to know Walter well by that stage and when I took over the Scotland job in 1985 when Jock Stein sadly passed away I made Walter my assistant with the national team."I thought I would sound him out when we were on Scotland duty together. We were going to play in Israel and I didnt know that Walter was going to Rangers at that time. So while we were in Tel Aviv I told him that I had been offered the chance to go to Arsenal and I asked what he thought."As it transpired, Smith was to move to Ibrox, initially as the assistant to Graeme Souness. Ferguson said: "He [Smith] was positive about it [Arsenal], saying they were a big club and that kind of thing."So I said to him: Do you fancy coming with me? Then he dropped the bombshell that he was going to Rangers. I said: When did this happen? and he told me it was a long story but he would fill me in later."Of course I later learned that Graeme Souness had been lined up to take over and Walter was going to Ibrox with him."The thing about the Arsenal offer was that they wanted an answer right away but I couldnt give them one because I was going to the World Cup in Mexico with Scotland. So the Arsenal thing fell by the wayside. Walter went to Rangers and then later that year I went to Manchester United."Ferguson explained that he had aspirations of moving south at the time of Arsenals approach, after a highly successful time in aberdeen."I had started to get itchy feet," he said. "I felt I had achieved everything I could with aberdeen. I was a young man and I felt the challenge of England would be good for me."Of course I was offered the Rangers job in 1983 but I just felt having done so well with aberdeen and having such a great relationship with the chairman, Dick Donald, and vice-chairman, Chris Anderson, it would have been a kick in the teeth to them to go to Rangers."So I felt the best thing would be to go to England and I always remember Dick Donald telling me that the only club that would satisfy me was Manchester United. Amazingly I was there five or six months later and I had no inkling about it."Ferguson and Smith were to be united in 2004, when the latter assisted the former for a spell at Old Trafford. At that time Carlos Queiroz had left United for Real Madrid but was to return for the start of the following season."I knew I was going to be bringing Carlos back because he was having a hard time at [Real] Madrid," Ferguson said. "I explained this to Walter in the January but I felt I needed someone in that run-in, someone I could depend on."I went to Glasgow to see him and he was delighted because he wanted to work. He did a smashing job and the players loved him and, of course, we won the FA Cup that year."Sir Alex FergusonArsenalManchester UnitedEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 1-2 Inverness Caledonian Thistle | SPL match report
The pressure was mounting on the aberdeen manager Mark McGhee tonight after his side followed up a 9-0 thrashing at Celtic with a 2-1 home defeat to Inverness at Pittodrie.Adam Rooney converted a 34th-minute penalty to give Caley Thistle the lead after Grant Munro had been fouled in the box in an off-the-ball incident. The Dons battled back and the substitute Andrius Velicka, who had replaced the injured Darren Mackie, showed great composure in slotting the ball past the advancing Ryan Esson five minutes after the break. However, with nine minutes remaining Munro headed home Richie Forans cross to defeat the Dons. The result preserves Terry Butchers sides year-long unbeaten away run but may have severe repercussions for McGhee, whose team have picked up four points from the last possible 30. The visitors dominated the early stages against a nervous aberdeen and should have taken the lead after eight minutes when the unmarked Rooney headed wide from an inswinging Jonny Hayes corner. The Dons were struggling to maintain possession although Chris Maguire did have the opportunity to test Esson from distance after 12 minutes, but his weak effort sliced wide of the target. Only a superb save from Jamie Langfield prevented the Dons falling behind two minutes later after Irishman Rooneys glancing header from Stuart Duffs cross looked certain to find the corner of the net.At the other end Scott Vernon combined with Mackie to give himself a sight of goal but Esson managed to claw away the strikers left-foot shot. The Dons should have broken the deadlock after 28 minutes but Vernon failed to direct his header on target from Mackies enticing cross. The stand-in captain Zander Diamond was next to produce an inviting delivery into the box a minute later with Rory McArdles downward header kept out brilliantly by Esson. But just as aberdeen began to settle they fell behind in controversial circumstances after 34 minutes.A Duff free-kick appeared to be drifting harmlessly to safety when Munro fell in the box after colliding with a Dons defender in an off-the-ball incident and referee John McKendrick pointed to the spot. Mackie and Diamond were cautioned for their protests before Rooney slotted the ball past Langfield from 12 yards. The Dons were dealt a further blow when Mackie suffered a serious-looking injury after a collision with the Caley goalkeeper Esson and was replaced by the on-loan Rangers striker Velicka just before the interval.aberdeen made a determined start to the second half and the substitute Velicka should have equalised within four minutes but the Lithuanian headed over from a pinpoint Sone Aluko free-kick.However Velicka striker got the Dons back on level terms a minute later when, after being played in one-on-one by Vernon, he calmly knocked the ball past the advancing Esson and into the net.The home supporters were appealing for a penalty when Derek Youngs powerful drive from the edge of the area looked to have deflected off the arm of a Caley defender but referee McKendrick waved play on.With nine minutes remaining Caley scored the winner when Foran crossed for Munro to head from 12 yards past the diving Langfield. The Dons surged forward in search of a second equaliser but Caley held on for victory in what could turn out to be McGhees final match in charge of the Dons.Scottish Premier LeagueaberdeenInverness Caledonian Thistle guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 4-2 Hibernian
At least Colin Calderwood cannot claim to be in any way unaware of Hibernians deficiencies after their trip to aberdeen. The former Scotland defenders first match in charge highlighted the defensive flaws that undermined the tenure of his predecessor, John Hughes, to such damaging effect. The Hibs players made absolutely no attempt to pull the wool over Calderwoods eyes.Hibs had arrived in the north-east looking to prolong the suffering of another manager, Mark McGhee, but left in the knowledge Calderwood has his work cut out in trying to revive fortunes at Easter Road. Bluntly, he has taken over an insipid bunch. Hibs are not particularly short of attacking touch, even if that has been diminished by the sale of Anthony Stokes to Celtic. Yet their lack of commanding defenders, or an effective midfield spoiler, makes them a soft touch to play against. It has also taken them closer to the SPLs relegation zone than its upper echelons.Calderwood can take at least some solace that the majority of his firsta€‘team squad are in the final year of their contracts. The new manager, once a defender of some repute, will not have much trouble identifying shortcomings.McGhee will have enjoyed this win, though; and how he needed it. aberdeens manager entered the game with a record of 12 wins from 46 matches in charge, with a single point taken out of the last possible 18. An attendance of 7,587 highlighted local disenchantment.McGhees colourful, often confrontational, justification of aberdeens form has proved essential viewing and listening in recent weeks. At least now he need not seek excuses. Tuesdays League Cup visit of Falkirk to Pittodrie no longer looks so threatening to the manager.Despite aberdeen dominating the early exchanges, it was the visitors Colin Nish who had passed up the best chance to open the scoring. Chris Maguire proved more lethal, the aberdeen forward accepting a fine pass from Sone Aluko before delivering an equally impressive, angled finish. If the Hibs defence was only partly at fault for that strike, they were blatantly culpable as a Sol Bamba own goal doubled the aberdeen lead. Bamba completely missed an attempt at a header as the ball entered his penalty area, an error that was compounded as the Ivorian defender crucially deflected a Scott Vernon shot beyond the stranded Mark Brown.Hibs best hope of first-half salvation fell to John Rankin, who wastefully fired straight at Mark Howard when one-on-one. In Rankins defence, the chance had fallen to his weaker foot, his right.Vernon, who has proved one of McGhees better signings, turned home a Maguire cross six minutes after the interval to finish the contest. It was the much-travelled strikers sixth goal in a red shirt, a decent return at this formative stage of the campaign.Salt was rubbed into an ever-widening Hibs wound by the identity of aberdeens fourth scorer: Paul Hartley, once a cult hero in a Hearts shirt, took great delight in notching his latest penalty, awarded after Chris Hogg had hacked at Aluko.Nish limited the embarrassment with a header from Paul Hanlons cross. It was the strikers last action of the match, as he had to depart with an ankle injury. That moment rather summed up Hibs forgettable afternoon.Bambas stoppage-time goal, also a header, was rather irrelevant. Calderwood would rather the defender popped up usefully in another penalty area - his own - where his services are badly needed.Scottish Premier LeagueaberdeenHibernianEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

The Open 2011: Tom Lewis heads back to amateurs with much to learn
Tom Lewis takes Silver Medal as leading amateur Englishman says he will not turn professional yetA return to amateur golfing reality could hit home to Tom Lewis on Scotlands northa€‘east coast this week.Lewis carded 74 on Sunday, nine more shots than he took to announce his arrival on the big stage three days earlier, but an aggregate total of nine over par was enough to claim the Silver Medal as the best amateur at the Open Championship this year. The 20-year-old Englishman took that award by three strokes from Peter Uihlein, the 21-year-old American who finished on 12 over par.Lewis revealed he seems likely to knock back the chance to play in the Scandinavian Masters this week to join up with Walker Cup hopefuls in aberdeen. The Great Britain and Ireland amateur team take on the United States at Royal aberdeen in September, with the coming days being used as practice sessions. Lewis did not seem entirely happy about it but is anxious not to be disrespectful to the amateur game."It would have been really good to have played in Sweden, but Ive been told that the R&A would much prefer me being in aberdeen," Lewis said. "Its a bit disappointing that Im not allowed to play next week, but if Im going to stay an amateur then Ive got to do what the amateurs do."Rubbing shoulders with the worlds best players seems to have persuaded Lewis that he should wait before joining the professional ranks. There will be plenty pointing out to him that he should do exactly that now, to give himself a better chance of earning a European Tour card for next year."I dont think Ill be turning pro," Lewis said. "I think Ive got things to learn, as Ive just lost by about 20 shots this week. It will be nice to have a sit down with the team and work out whats best for me and my future, and it would be lovely to play Walker Cup."I feel like Im ready in certain areas, but playing with Phil Mickelson on Saturday made me feel terrible, really, around the greens. If youre going to play with the best players in the world, you have to chip and putt like they do. So Ive just got to keep grinding at that and work on my swing a little bit."Eighteen holes with Mickelson has merely intensified Lewiss willingness to improve. "Im glad I played with him because I realised that Im pretty bad around the greens and I need to work on that a lot," said the amateur."If I had his short game, I would probably be out there competing at the top. But thats the difference between me and the top boys at this moment in time."Uihlein, the US amateur champion, said: "This has been a great experience - the Open is the hardest test of golf you can get. Ill be at the Walker Cup if picked and it would be nice to play Tom."The Open 2011The OpenGolfEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Celtic 2-1 aberdeen | Scottish Premier League match report
Celtics stand-in captain Charlie Mulgrew scored a crucial second-half winner against his former team aberdeen at Parkhead to keep Neil Lennons men within 10 points of the Scottish Premier League leaders, Rangers. The Hoops midfielder Ki Sung-yueng gave the home side the lead in the 17th minute when he finished off a fine move but they failed to build on that and the Dons defender Ryan Jack levelled on the hour. However, in the 72nd minute, following a Ki free-kick, the former aberdeen defender Mulgrew drove high into the net from close range before Jack - who had been booked for over-celebrating his equaliser by running to the travelling support - was sent off after picking up a second card for a foul on Gary Hooper. It was the second time in a week that Mulgrew had come to his sides rescue, having scored the equaliser in their earlier 3-3 draw at Kilmarnock.Celtic have a game in hand over Rangers but Lennon will not want many more nervy afternoons like this. All the recent statistics pointed to a comfortable home win for Celtic, who had replaced Cha Du-ri up front with Hooper after his recovery from an ankle injury.aberdeen had lost the corresponding fixture last year 9-0 and were beaten in all five encounters between the two teams in three different competitions last season, conceding 21 goals and scoring one. But they came to this game having won their past two SPL games and kept the same side, with Rory Fallon and Scott Vernon leading the line. It was - if nothing else - a statement of intent from their manager, Craig Brown. The Dons did not look intimidated in the early stages and Kari Arnasons long-distance drive in the seventh minute, which went well wide, only alleviated the pressure on the Hoops defence. Moments later the Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster did well to cut out a dangerous cross from the Dons wide man Fraser Fyvie. In the 13th minute Ki set up Beram Kayal 30 yards from goal but the midfielders shot was wide. However, Ki opened the scoring when he finished a fine move started by Anthony Stokes and Kayal by taking a Hooper pass and steering the ball past David Gonzalez and inside the far post from 10 yards, although it looked as if the visiting keeper might have done better. The Parkhead keeper Glenn Loovens, having picked up an injury, was immediately replaced by the man he had recently replaced, Daniel Majstorovic. The visitors started the second half sharply but Ki should have doubled Celtics lead in the 49th minute when Matthewss cross from the right came right across his path - however the midfielder drove his left-footed shot wide.In the 55th minute, Joe Ledley - playing left-back again - fired in a cross which was cleared to the edge of the box - but Hoopers shot took a deflection and Gonzalez saved at his left-hand post.aberdeen levelled on the hour when Jack weaved his way into the Celtic box and as the Parkhead defence hesitated, fired in a left-foot drive which squirmed its way in at the far post.Moments later, Stokes fired a free-kick over from 25 yards - but the mood inside Celtic Park had changed. Celtic piled on the pressure and Gonzalez had to tip a powerful drive from Matthews over the bar for a corner. The Dons were glad to escape two more scares within a minute when Hooper had chances. However, Mulgrew restored Celtics lead from close range after Kis long free-kick fell to him six yards out, sweeping the ball high into the net.Scottish Premier League 2011-12CelticaberdeenScottish Premier League guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Hibernian 1-2 St Mirren | Scottish Premier League
Hibernian still without home win aberdeen record first victory of the seasonTwo goals in final three minutes of the first half helped St Mirren to a 2-1 away victory at Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League.Hibernians Garry OConnor put the home side ahead on 25 minutes, but goals from former Cardiff striker Steven Thompson and a clinical strike from his midfield near-namesake Steven Thomson on the stroke of half-time consigned Hibs to their second successive league defeat. The second half was a much tighter affair, with limited chances. Colin Calderwood replaced Victor Palsson with Danny Galbraith but the midfielder struggled to make an impact. The Easter Road crowd vented their fury on several occasions and were clearly disgruntled with their sides lack of attacking spark. The introduction of Nigerian striker Akpo Sodje raised hopes of an equaliser but the best chance fell to fellow substitute Martin Scott, who was unable to keep his shot down. The result leaves Hibs still searching for their first home win of the season.aberdeen picked up their first SPL win of the season with a 2-1 victory against Inverness at Pittodrie. The Dons could have broken the deadlock after six minutes, when Kari Arnason sent a cross into the box but Scott Vernon failed to keep his header under the bar.The opening goal for aberdeen arrived after 12 minutes, when Josh Magennis showed great strength to ease past two defenders before slotting the ball across goal for Rob Milsom, who turned it home. The hosts may have had a long wait for their first strike of the season but they did not have to wait long for their second. Vernon pounced on a mistake by Roman Golobart to run through on goal and coolly fire past Ryan Esson.aberdeen could have had a third when Magennis linked up with Fraser Fyvie, but the Northern Irishmans powerful effort whistled past the post.Inverness thought they had pulled a goal back on 36 minutes when Jonny Hayes found the back of the net but referee Crawford Allan had already blown his whistle for an earlier infringement. The Dons could have extended their lead before the break when Milsoms curling free-kick evaded everyone, but it bounced back off the post.Inverness made the better start to the second half and Golobart could have made amends for his earlier error but the Spaniard failed to connect with Greg Tanseys inviting delivery.Dons goalkeeper David Gonzalez had enjoyed a relatively quiet afternoon but the Colombian was alert to gather the ball at the feet of Richie Foran after an intelligent pass by Hayes. The hosts were, however, still looking dangerous on the counter-attack, and Esson called upon to make a terrific save to deny Iceland international Arnason.aberdeen had a penalty appeal waved away on 73 minutes when substitute Mitch Megginson, who had replaced Magennis, fell under pressure from Chris Hogg.Chris Clark was given his Dons debut in his second spell at the club when he came on for Fyvie after 75 minutes .A defensive lapse by the hosts gifted the Highlanders a way back into the match when Youl Mawene carelessly headed the ball into the path of Caley skipper Foran, who had the easiest of tasks to pass the ball into the net on 79 minutes.Foran then had a great chance to earn his side a point. He raced through on goal, but Gonzalez made a smart stop to ensure the Dons collected all three points, their first win of the season.Scottish Premier League 2011-12Scottish Premier LeagueHibernianSt MirrenaberdeenInverness Caledonian Thistle guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

SPL clubs irritation at being cheap talent pool for the English grows | Ewan Murray
Jack Grimmer leaving aberdeen for Fulham after a handful of games has led aberdeens Craig Brown to vent his frustration at a problem that affects even the Old FirmCraig Brown, the aberdeen manager, has called for greater compensation to be paid to Scottish clubs who are now losing players to England as a matter of routine. In legislative terms, Browns appeal is likely to be in vain; the cheapness with which English clubs can take little more than a punt on youngsters from north of the border is a key attraction.Brown spoke after Jack Grimmer, a player who has made only a handful of first-team appearances at aberdeen, signed for Fulham. aberdeen are likely to be compensated by a mere 200,000 for the role they played in Grimmers development.Grimmer joins an ever-growing list. Charlie Adam, Eggert Jonsson, James McCarthy, James McArthur, Scott Allan and Craig Bryson are just a few of the players who have moved south from the SPL for relatively minor fees in recent times. Those at Rangers and Celtic may regard it as depressing that someone such as Allan would rather perform at West Bromwich Albion than chase medals with the Old Firm. That, however, is harsh reality; the Glasgow duo themselves look to pick up players from less rich markets.Adam proved the ultimate success story at Blackpool, making it little surprise that Ian Holloway has returned to Rangers to secure John Fleck on loan with an option to buy.For these purchasing clubs, there is little financial risk, which represents a difference from what would occur if signings were targeted in the Championship or League One. The price tag placed on Huddersfield Towns Jordan Rhodes illustrates that. For the foreseeable future, clubs at the lower end of the Premier League and in the Championship will look out for the best young players emerging in Scotland.Higher up the Scottish chain, Celtic have a battle on their hands to keep English admirers at bay. And, given the timing of Southamptons interest in Gary Hooper in particular, that challenge is a fascinating one.Celtics recruitment of Hooper, Beram Kayal, Emilio Izaguirre, Victor Wanyama and Adam Matthews had been admirable on two fronts. Not only have the players excelled on the field at different levels, but they are already worth considerably more than what was paid for them. In the present circumstances of any Scottish club, and Celtic are no exception, moving players on for profit forms a key part of their business plan.Yet Celtics immediate aim is to reclaim the title. To aid that cause, it is understandable that the manager Neil Lennon wants to retain each of his prominent players until the summer at least, with the manager adamant he will do precisely that. Southamptons modus operandi is different; they need a striker, immediately, to boost their promotion cause. So far, Celtic have resisted two bids from the south coast club for Hooper, the second thought to be worth about 6m. Hooper cost Celtic just over 1m in the summer of 2010. In business, but not football, circumstances a sale for such profit would make perfect sense.Should Southampton return to the table with an offer closer to 10m, Celtic would have a genuine dilemma on their hands. The lack of an automatic route into the Champions League group phase for Scottish clubs means figures such as that are no longer routinely available to the Old Firm.Even less is available to clubs such as aberdeen, hence Browns frustrations. It seems unlikely in the present circumstances that top-flight clubs in Scotland can retain their most exciting young talent. When they are not even collecting a decent reward for selling them, discord is perfectly understandable.Scottish Premier League 2011-12aberdeenCelticRangersScottish Premier LeagueEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. A Scott Vernon penalty was enough to give 10-man aberdeen their second win in a row against Hibernian in a fiery encounter at a snowy Pittodrie. The Dons opened the scoring after 59 minutes when Peter Pawlett was adjudged to have been fouled by Ivan Sproule in the penalty area and Vernon slotted home from the penalty spot. However, the main talking point of the match came after 67 minutes when Pawlett was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Lewis Stevenson, much to the fury of the home support.Despite their numerical disadvantage the Dons held on for the victory which moves them six points clear of Scottish Premier League bottom side Dunfermline.Rory McArdle stepped in to replace the suspended Andrew Considine for aberdeen, while Fraser Fyvie and Mohamed Chalali were both handed starts with Youl Mawene, who had been struggling with a knee injury, and Chris Clark dropping to the bench.Hibs, who were looking to end a run of five league games without a victory, were missing Leigh Griffiths who was serving a one-match ban for making a gesture to Rangers fans during last weeks 2-0 defeat.Martin Scott came in to replace the on-loan Wolves striker, while Danny Galbraith started in place of the injured Isaiah Osbourne.aberdeen made a promising start with Chalali chipping a delightful ball towards Vernon at the back post after four minutes but Paul Hanlon made a brave clearance with the Englishman ready to pounce. The Dons were forced to make an early change with only 13 minutes gone when Chalali limped off with an injury and was replaced by youngster Pawlett.Hibs finally came to life after 16 minutes when Galbraith threaded a perfect pass through to Garry OConnor but the strikers low drive was well held by Jason Brown in the aberdeen goal.McArdle spurned a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock after 22 minutes when Hibs defender David Stephens carelessly nodded a Fyvie free-kick straight into his path but the defender blazed the ball high over the crossbar.Rob Milsom showed a great turn of pace to get past former Don Michael Hart before finding Rory Fallon in the centre but the New Zealand international was unable to divert his header on target. The Dons had a lucky escape after 28 minutes when Galbraiths deep free-kick found the unmarked Scott but Brown made a terrific save to keep out the former Ross County players left-foot volley.Hibernian made the better start to the second half and were appealing for a penalty when OConnor went down in the box under pressure from Arnason but the referee Craig Thomson waved away the half-hearted protests. But the Dons had better luck after 59 minutes when Sproule felled Pawlett and this time Thomson did point to the spot and aberdeens top scorer Vernon assumed the penalty-taking responsibilities to rolled the ball home for his eighth goal of the season. The Dons were reduced to 10 men after 67 minutes when Pawlett was shown a straight red card for a sliding challenge on Stevenson. The Dons opted to bring on another defender with Mawene introduced for the tiring Fallon, while Hibernian introduced an extra attacker with Akpo Sodje replacing Hart. The visitors pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with Sodje in particular denied by a smart stop by Brown, as the Dons held on for maximum points.Scottish Premier League 2011-12aberdeenHibernianScottish Premier LeaguePress Association guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Five-star Hearts give Craig Brown notice of the task ahead at aberdeen
Hearts 5-0 aberdeen St Mirren 1-2 St JohnstoneJim Jefferies hailed "a fantastic victory and a fantastic performance" as his Hearts side cantered to a 5-0 win against aberdeen at Tynecastle. The scale of the task facing aberdeens new manager, Craig Brown, was confirmed as the Dons lost their 12th game of the season and remain at the foot of the Scottish Premier League.David Templeton and Rudi Skacel were on target after four and nine minutes, respectively. The pair combined on the left and Chris Maguires challenge could have seen the hosts awarded a penalty. Templeton, though, with Stephen Elliott nearby, bounced back up and smashed the ball in, despite the presence of two defenders on the line.Templeton was to the fore for the second, running down the left before playing a ball across the area for Skacel to slide in. Stephen Elliott headed in a third goal after 51 minutes. Skacel tucked in a fourth just before the hour mark. The former Hearts forward Andrius Velicka came on with 20 minutes left for the Dons, with Templeton and Ian Black making way for Ryan Stevenson and Novikovas for the hosts. But despite the departure of Templeton, the Dons were given no respite.Arvydas Novikovas struck the fifth 13 minutes from time, netting a fine individual goal. The Lithuanian cut in off the wing and firing a right-footed shot into the top corner. The substitute Calum Elliot then lofted the ball just over as Hearts went close to a sixth.Liam Craigs last-gasp strike gave St Johnstone victory over St Mirren in their clash at St Mirren Park. The battle of the Saints came to life in the second half after Sam Parkin gave the visitors the lead 53 minutes in, with Michael Higdon levelling nine minutes later from a 25-yard free-kick. But with seconds of the 90 minutes remaining Craig scored from just inside the area to take the three points back to Perth. After Higdons goal St Johnstone retaliated and Craig Samson made a great save from a Dave Mackay header before Parkin slipped a shot from the edge of the area inches past the post.Kenny McLean replaced Patrick Cregg for the home side while Collin Samuel came on for Peter MacDonald as both teams went for the winner. Michael Duberry headed a Danny Grainger free-kick just over and at the other end, Peter Enckelman made a fine stop from David van Zantens angled drive. With seconds remaining, Craig grabbed a dramatic winner with a composed side-footed finish past Samson after being set up by Samuel.HeartsaberdeenSt MirrenSt JohnstoneScottish Premier LeagueNial Briggs guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

aberdeen 1 Rangers 2 | SPL Match report
Steven Naismith was stretchered off as Rangers maintained their 100% away record in the Scottish Premier League with victory over 10-man aberdeen at Pittodrie.A clinical finish from Kyle Lafferty after 58 minutes and a Nikica Jelavic penalty 11 minutes later after Darren Mackie had fouled Sasa Papac gave Rangers their seventh win from seven on their travels.Richard Foster netted a consolation for the Dons courtesy of an error by Allan McGregor before Rory Fallon was sent off for elbowing Dorin Goian in the closing moments. The Rangers win, however, came at a cost with Naismith collapsing to the ground unchallenged in the first half after appearing to twist his knee moments after hurting himself in a collision with Dons midfielder Rob Milsom. The Light Blues made only one change from the side that defeated Hearts 2-0 at Tynecastle last weekend with Lafferty making way for Croatia international Jelavic.aberdeen, who were searching for their third successive home win, were without Ryan Jack who was suspended following his red card in their 2-1 defeat to Celtic.Top scorer Scott Vernon was another notable absentee for the Dons with Chris Clark and Rory McArdle coming in to replace the missing duo.aberdeen, who deployed Fallon as a lone striker in a defensive 4-5-1 formation, made a promising start with Milsom dragging a shot past the post from the edge of the area.Kari Arnason was shown the first yellow card of the match after only eight minutes for a late challenge on Gers captain Steven Davis. The Iceland international was involved again two minutes later when his powerfully struck volley from 35 yards forced McGregor into a desperate save. The Dons were forced into an early change when Milsom limped off following a late challenge from Naismith and was replaced by Mackie.Naismith was hurt making the challenge and was eventually stretchered off the park after appearing to twist his knee unchallenged and was replaced by Northern Ireland international Lafferty after 24 minutes.Rangers went close to opening the scoring five minutes later when a Lafferty cross found Papac unmarked at the back post but the Bosnian defenders diving header flew wide. The home supporters were appealing for a penalty after 33 minutes when Mackie fell under pressure from Goian after McGregor had blocked Clarks low drive but referee Willie Collum waved play on.Maurice Edu joined Arnason in the referees notebook for a mistimed challenge on the Dons midfielder seven minutes before the break. The visitors carved out an early opening after the restart when Jelavic cut the ball back for the advancing Lafferty but the striker failed to connect with the ball properly and pulled his shot wide. The Rangers pressure continued after 51 minutes when aberdeen goalkeeper David Gonzalez was called upon to block Jelavics effort before Lee McCulloch fired the rebound wide under pressure from Andrew Considine. And the eventual opener for Rangers arrived after 58 minutes when, after a costly slip by Foster as he tried to clear, Davis threaded an inch-perfect pass through to Lafferty who rifled the ball across Gonzalez into the bottom corner of the net.The Ibrox side had the chance to double their lead after 69 minutes when Mackie brought down Papac in the penalty box as he was about to pull the trigger and Jelavic duly despatched the spot-kick past Gonzalez.Foster, who spent last season on loan at Rangers, pulled a goal back for the Dons when McGregor failed to keep out his shot from distance to concede the Gers first goal away from home this season. But any hopes of a Dons comeback disappeared on the stroke of full time when Fallon was given his marching orders for appearing to elbow Goian.Scottish Premier League 2011-12aberdeenRangersScottish Premier LeaguePress Association guardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Lennon facing disciplinary action
Lennon sent to stand in Celtics 2-0 defeat at Hearts Celtic manager abused fourth official after sending offNeil Lennon is facing heavy disciplinary action from the Scottish Football Association, with two separate committees set to investigate events involving the Celtic manager during and after last nights defeat to Hearts.Lennon was sent to the stand with 20 minutes to play at Tynecastle, after complaining furiously over the non-award of a penalty. That dismissal has triggered an automatic two-match touchline ban for the Celtic manager.Yet if the report received by the SFA from the referee, Craig Thomson, tomorrow includes an allegation of abuse directed from Lennon towards the fourth official, Steven McLean, after the manager was sent off - as television pictures seem to show was the case - then the governing bodys disciplinary body will discuss what is regarded as excessive misconduct. The SFAs general purposes committee, meanwhile, will discuss Lennons post-match media comments at their next meeting on 29 November. At the same gathering, allegations made last week by the Celtic striker Gary Hooper about referees are also due to be on the agenda.Lennon was scathing after the Hearts defeat about the circumstances of his own dismissal and that of the midfielder Joe Ledley. The Irishman also reiterated his unhappiness at not being handed that spot-kick following a handball from the Hearts substitute Ryan Stevenson. "Craig Thomson is meant to be one of the best referees in the country," Lennon said. "It doesnt say much for referees if thats the case." When asked whether or not he had asked the officials for clarification, Lennon added: "They will probably have their story ready already." Celtic will not appeal against Ledleys red card and they are still considering the Lennon situation.Craig Levein, meanwhile, has left five of Rangerss key players out of his Scotland squad for Tuesday nights friendly with the Faroe Islands. Allan McGregor, Kirk Broadfoot, David Weir, Kenny Miller and Lee McCulloch have been spared the match in aberdeen due to their clubs Champions League commitments."To be fair, we have only one team that has so many players involved," Levein, the manager, said. "We have had Rangers players playing with us, with injuries. I have absolutely no doubts about the willingness of the Rangers lads to play for Scotland but I do know they have played a hell of a lot of games recently. We all wish that they [Rangers] do well in their European competition." aberdeen have announced that their manager, Mark McGhee, will remain in office, for the time being at least. Reports had claimed McGhee would lose his job if aberdeen lost, as proved to be the case, to Inverness on Tuesday night. After two days of board meetings, though, McGhee has been handed a stay of execution. A statement read: "While there is a recognition that we do require to change some aspects of the way we operate, as a result of these talks, Marks position as manager remains and he, along with everyone else at this club, is fully focused on improving results on the park."CelticScottish Premier LeagueEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Hearts come from a goal down to see off Inverness
Hearts beat Inverness 3-1 at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium aberdeen and Motherwell draw; St Johnstone notch first winJim Jefferies praised his sides attacking prowess as Hearts recovered from going a goal behind at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium to overcome Inverness 3-1.As expected, the new Hearts arrival Rudi Skacel was not included in the squad due to a lack of fitness as the manager brought Calum Elliot and Craig Thomson into the starting line-up, with Kevin Kyle and Adrian Mrowiec dropping to the bench having started the 3-0 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead last week. The hosts opened the scoring when Eric Odhiambo gave Caley Thistle the lead in the 37th minute but a Chris Innes own-goal on the stroke of half-time got the visitors back on level terms.Ryan Stevenson put Hearts ahead 10 minutes after the interval and Elliot made sure of the points with the third goal 14 minutes later."It has been really pleasing that we have been able to score three away goals at a tough place like Inverness, " Jefferies said.aberdeen fought back to grab a 1-1 draw in their match with Motherwell at Fir Park.Jamie Murphy gave the home side the lead in the 35th minute when he raced on to a Nick Blackman pass before slotting the ball past the Dons goalkeeper, Jamie Langfield, from 10 yards out. However, Dons striker Scott Vernon made up for his missed chance just before the break when he levelled 10 minutes into the second half from close range after Chris Maguire had set him up. Motherwell responded by applying concerted pressure to the aberdeen penalty area but at the other end Vernon headed into the side netting after Maguire had escaped the attentions of midfielder Steve Jennings. In the 85th minute Murphy burrowed in to the visitors area but his angled shot from 10 yards flew high and wide.In the last minute Alan Gow crossed from the right to Jennings but the midfielder, stretching to make a good connection, missed the target from six yards. The point keeps aberdeen in fourth place, above their hosts, but it was a game that will be quickly forgotten by those 5,251 supporters who made the effort to travel to Lanarkshire.Hibernian were left without a home win in nine matches after being held to a 1-1 draw by Hamilton at Easter Road.Derek Riordan netted a ninth-minute opener and hit the bar moments later, and Colin Nish had a second-half effort ruled out for offside as Hibs were again frustrated, then jeered off by their own supporters. The Scotland international Riordan hit the bar with a 25-yard free-kick soon after his goal but Marco Paixao made amends for his error in the buildup to the opener with a 22nd-minute equaliser following a strong run by Nigel Hasselbaink .Andy Jackson set St Johnstone on the way to their first league win of the season before being taken off on a stretcher following a knock to the head.Jackson fired home an early opener before being felled in a collision with the St Mirren goalkeeper, Paul Gallacher, midway through the first half. His team-mates soon moved two goals ahead through a well-executed header from Sam Parkin.Within three minutes a deflected shot from Sean Lynch made the score 2-1 and gave St Mirren reason to hope for a result. But the home side remained in the ascendancy in the second half without looking entirely convincing. The visitors missed a late opportunity through Darren McGregor and lacked the firepower to take anything from the game.Scottish Premier LeagueHeartsInverness Caledonian ThistleaberdeenMotherwellHamiltonHibernianSt JohnstoneSt MirrenNial Briggs guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Celtic 3-1 St Johnstone
Tony Mowbrays team still 10 points behind leaders Rangers aberdeen come from 2-0 down to draw with Dundee UnitedRobbie Keane kept up his impressive scoring rate for Celtic as his second-half penalty helped the Parkhead team to a comfortable 3-0 Scottish Premier League victory over St Johnstone.Teenage defender Josh Thompsons first goal for the Hoops gave them a half-time advantage before Saints keeper Graeme Smith conceded a penalty in the 67th minute for fouling Marc-Antoine Fortune, allowing the on-loan Republic of Ireland striker to take his tally to nine in nine games since arriving from Spurs in January. Keane has now matched his tally for his permanent employers this season.Georgios Samaras, on for Fortune, made it 3-0 with three minutes remaining when he slotted the ball past Smith from 14 yards. However, despite their victory Tony Mowbrays men are still 10 points behind leaders Rangers. The leagues other two fixtures both ended in 2-2 draws. The New Firm derby between aberdeen and Dundee United ended level at Pittodrie, with the struggling Dons giving a spirited display to fight back from 2-0 down to claim a point. aberdeen have now gone 11 games without a win, having only twice previously gone on such a dire run, in 1917 and 1927. But under-fire manager Mark McGhee can take some solace from this performance. The hosts made a bright start with Uniteds Slovakian goalkeeper Dusan Pernis called upon to punch clear a Derek Young free-kick inside four minutes. However, some careless aberdeen defending gifted United the lead after only eight minutes. Irishman Jon Daly took advantage of some hesitant play between Zander Diamond and Charlie Mulgrew to advance on goal before thrashing the ball high past Jamie Langfield for the opening goal. The visitors scored a second goal after 24 minutes when Daly outjumped a static Dons defence to head home a Danny Swanson free-kick.McGhees team fought back with a Diamond header and a Michael Paton penalty in first-half stoppage time. Steven MacLean and Fraser Fyvie were introduced into the action for the Dons in place of the tiring Michael Paton and Sone Aluko, while the visitors introduced the lively Jennison Myrie-Williams and Francisco Sandaza for Prince Buaben and David Goodwillie. Both sides pressed for a winning third goal in the closing stages but some poor finishing and resolute defending ensured the two teams had to settle for a draw. The winger Ryan Flynn earned Falkirk a crucial point in their battle to avoid relegation as the Bairns came from behind to draw a see-saw encounter at Hamilton. The visitors earned themselves the advantage at half-time thanks to Scott Arfields 26th-minute strike but Accies drew level through a Mickael Antoine-Curier header and went ahead with a Simon Mensing penalty. The Accies lead lasted only three minutes, however, as former Liverpool youngster Flynn volleyed in what could prove to be a vital equaliser on the hour mark.Three league fixtures take place this midweek. St Johnstone host Steven Pressleys Falkirk side on Tuesday night while Kilmarnock play Hamilton. St Mirren host Celtic, who will seek to reduce Rangers advantage. Neil Lennon says Rangers are favourites in Old Firm cup tie
They are not playing badly and are a strong team. Celtic manager is relishing another Old Firm gameNeil Lennon believes Rangers merit favouritism ahead of Sundays Old Firm game, despite the fine recent form of the Celtic managers team. The Scottish Premier League leaders cantered to a 3-0 win at aberdeen on Tuesday, giving them an aggregate score of 15-1 from their past five outings. Rangers have lost one in seven since Celtics victory at Ibrox last month but Lennon says the odds should be stacked against a similar outcome from the Scottish Cup tie at the same venue."I think Rangers are favourites with home advantage," he said. "They are not playing badly at all and are a strong team. I always think that, if you have home advantage in an Old Firm game, its a huge help for you. We do go into the game familiar with the fixture, with playing at Ibrox and the players wont have too much fear. But its all on the day."I want them to play as well as they did on January but there are no guarantees. Look at Martin ONeill. He won his first Old Firm game 6-2 then lost the next derby 5-1. Things can change very quickly."Lennons sentiment was echoed by his midfielder Paddy McCourt, who pointed to Rangers likely minda€‘set. "I would imagine this game will be a lot harder than the last one because we know how we felt when Rangers left Celtic Park with the three points earlier in the season," McCourt said. "Im sure how they felt after January will be fresh in their minds and they will come out all fired up and ready to go."Lennon reaffirmed his affinity for Old Firm matches at Ibrox. The manager enjoyed a colourful time at that venue during his playing days and said he relished whatever abuse came his way. "Absolutely," Lennon said. "The more abuse I got, the more I was hurting them. I love it [Ibrox]. Its a great arena. But you only enjoy it if you win and get a positive result."I worry a helluva lot more now. Maybe worry isnt right but I do think about much more. As a player you looked after yourself and prepared as best you could and now Im looking after 22 of them and thinking if they will do justice."Theres a nervous excitement about these games but this one has been a bit quieter in the build-up because of the transfer window and the game at aberdeen on Tuesday."Lennon must make a late decision on his centre-half partnership with his preferred duo, Thomas Rogne and Daniel Majstorovic, having only just returned to training following injury.CelticRangersScottish CupEwan Murray guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More [detalii...]

Motherwells Jamie Murphy stars in opening-day win over Inverness
Motherwell begin with emphatic 3-0 win at Fir Park Ten-man aberdeen held by St JohnstoneFirst-half goals from Stevie Hammell and Jamie Murphy sent Stuart McCalls Motherwell team on their way to a comfortable 3-0 home victory against Inverness on the opening day of the Scottish Premier League season.Keith Lasley added a fine second-half strike to confirm the win in an entertaining game for the home crowd. With the SPL making its earliest start to a season, scouts from at least eight English clubs were present at Fir Park with Motherwells Murphy and Chris Humphrey the likely points of interest. Tottenham, Wolves, Stoke, West Brom and Birmingham were among those represented and they saw an early demonstration of pace and imagination from Murphy. The 21-year-old broke clear following a one-two with Michael Higdon but slipped the ball just wide under pressure from the chasing defenders. The hosts stayed on the front foot and Nicky Law shot inches wide following Higdons flick on the edge of the penalty area.Caley Thistle had been restricted to occasional and unproductive counter-attacks until the 18th minute when Richie Forans shot struck the base of the post from 25 yards. Greg Tansey also hit the woodwork for the visitors in the first half.Foran soon had a much better chance but blazed over with his left foot from 12 yards following Gregory Tades knockdown. The home side quickly regained the initiative and took the lead in the 25th minute after Humphrey got to the byline and crossed from the right. Higdon flicked on and Hammell ran on to meet the ball on the half-volley and shoot high into the net off the near post.It was Hammells first Motherwell goal in seven and a half years to take his tally for the club to a mere three goals in 386 appearances.Murphy slotted home after a penetrating run three minutes later and Lasley wrapped up the contest with a glorious goal in the 77th minute. The ball broke to the midfielder 20 yards out following a half-cleared corner and he set himself up to thunder the ball into the top corner of the net.Jonny Hayes shot wide from long range for Terry Butchers team but they looked a beaten side in the final stages.Ten-man aberdeen were held to a goalless draw by St Johnstone in an engrossing opener at Pittodrie. The Dons right-back Ryan Jack was shown a straight red card for a wild lunge on the Rangers transfer target Murray Davidson in the games major talking point after 65 minutes. The aberdeen captain Richard Foster went close after 10 minutes when his dipping free-kick from 30 yards drifted just wide of the post. Foster went even closer three minutes later with a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area. The Dons had enjoyed the better chances before the sending-off but were unable to find a way past Peter Enckelman.Josh Magennis, who had replaced the ineffective Scott Vernon, surged past two Saints defenders but the Northern Irishman dragged his effort wide.Despite their numerical disadvantage it was aberdeen who finished the stronger side but the visitors held on for a hard-fought draw.Celtic play Hibernian at Easter Road in Sundays early kick-off with Dundee United hosting Kilmarnock at Tannadice. The home side enjoyed the best of the chances in the first half with Zander Diamond heading wide from five yards out before Michael Paton missed when clean through on goal. However, Pawlett struck with a powerful left-footed finish after 75 minutes to give the Dons victory. Two second-half goals from St Johnstone earned them a 2-1 win at Easter Road. Scottish Cup round-up: Jamie Murphy lead Motherwell to 6-0 Morton win
Eoin Doyle scored as Hibernian beat Kilmarnock 1-0 aberdeen fought back to earn a replay at Queen of the SouthMotherwell booked their place in the last eight of the Scottish Cup with an emphatic 6-0 win over Morton at Fir Park. The home side left their First Division opponents shellshocked as they raced to a 5-0 half-time advantage. Tom Hateley scored directly from a corner before Jamie Murphy, Shaun Hutchinson, Henrik Ojamaa and Nicky Law all added goals for the hosts.Jamie Murphy heaped further misery on the visitors when he scored his second midway through the second half to complete the scoring. The First Division side Ross County had to settle for a home replay against Scottish Premier League opponents St Mirren after Richard Brittain missed a late penalty in a 1-1 draw. The County captain had put his side ahead from the spot five minutes before halfa€‘time, only for the lead to be cancelled out within three minutes by a headed goal from the St Mirren striker Steven Thompson.County came close when Iain Vigurs struck a half-volley from the edge of the area after a free-kick had been cleared back out to him, but his powerful drive went wide as Craig Samson scrambled to cover it. Colin McMenamin then headed too high from Stuart Kettlewells cross from the right.Thompson almost doubled his tally 10 minutes from time with a good volley from a cross by the substitute Graham Carey- then McMenamin hit the sidea€‘netting after holding off Marc McAusland as he bored down on goal.Brittain had a glorious chance to win the game for the First Division side with a second penalty three minutes into stoppage time after Lee Mair brought down Mark Corcoran following a swift counterattack- but this time the County captain blasted his spot-kick well over the bar.A first-half Eoin Doyle goal earned Hibernian a place in the quarter-finals as they beat Kilmarnock 1-0 at Easter Road. The Irishmans goal was fitting reward for a fine display by the home side during an opening period in which they also had an effort by James McPake ruled out and Tom Soares went close. Paul Heffernan struck the visitors best chance straight at the recalled Graham Stack.Kilmarnock finally created a clear opportunity with 10 minutes remaining when Liam Kelly cut through the Hibs defence with a fine pass, but Heffernans low shot was well saved by Stack. The former Arsenal youth player was sharp again as the full-time whistle approached, pushing an awkward Danny Racchi shot to safety.aberdeen fought back to earn a replay against Queen of the South at Pittodrie. The visitors made the perfect start to the second half when, after weathering a period of aberdeen pressure, they broke upfield and scored against the run of play.Sam Parkin fed Scott McLaughlin who kept his composure and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper Jason Brown to give the Doonhamers hope of pulling off a shock against their SPL opponents, who have suffered several cup upsets in recent seasons.Rory McArdle struck the crossbar with a header before Scott Vernon scrambled a leveller after 67 minutes following a long Kari Arnason throw-in.The visitors defended bravely in the closing stages as the relentless aberdeen attacks continued with a chorus of boos ringing around the stadium as the home support made their feelings known .Scottish Cup 2011-12MotherwellMortonRoss CountySt MirrenaberdeenQueen of the SouthHibernianKilmarnockScottish CupNial Briggs guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
